Debit card information stolen....

Check my e-mail this morning and received an overdraft protection e-mail from my bank. Log on to my bank's website and there is a pending charge from wmv.chemistry.com for $99.96. A few months back I had a fraudulent charge but thankfully, it was only for $1.00. Anyone else have this happen?

I'm thinking I need to have my computer checked and a new protection program installed.

Luckily for me, CitiCard is pretty aggressive with their fraud protection filters because I got a call from them last month about some fraudulent charges on my credit card. 3 purchases from Sears.com for a lawn tractor and other stuff that totalled over $2,000. I was issued a new card and CC number and don't have to pay the charges, so all turned out well in the end.

I travel a lot for my job so I'm always getting calls from CitiCard about purchases in random places far from my home, and I always welcome these calls. It's much less of a nuisance for me to verify a couple of transactions than it would be to fight some bogus charges later on.

Beware if you see a fraudulent charge on your account for $1 because that is usually a sign that someone is testing to see if the credit card number is valid.

I had it done through paypal once and through my Chase card. I was notified right away by both companies and it was taken care of.

Got a new debit card in the mail last month along with a note that fraudulent activity had been noted, so they just replaced it.

This has happened to me twice on my debit card... both times I still had the card with me when it happened so it wasn't like I left it somewhere and someone found it. I think it's usually when you go out to eat somewhere and someone copies down the numbers and uses them. I never use the debit card anymore, only use the charge card, because you get better protection against fraud with a charge card. When someone scams your debit card it can set off a huge chain of problems, like other stuff starts bouncing because someone uses up your money, so then the stores you wrote checks to start trying to charge NSF fees, the bank charges fees on those too, etc., it takes forever to clean up. Good luck..

I Never use my debit card to buy anything on-line. When money is fraudulently taken out of your bank account using a debit card it's pretty much gone/in limbo until the investigation is done with and it's proven to be fraud. Basically that means if some crook scams your card and charges $2k against it then you're out $2k from your checking account until all is said and done. Of course there are a few exceptions where banks offer the same protection on their debit cards as they do credit cards, where the bank will take the hit during the dispute and put the questioned amount back in your account.

But with credit cards you can always call them up and place a hold or charge back (if you can convince them it wasn't you) and you're not out any money. Debit cards are instantly taken out of your account if ran as debit, if you run your debit card as credit that gives you a couple of days usually.

I've never (knock on wood) had an issue with my debit card in the past but have on a couple of occasions with a credit card. I never lost any money on the credit cards though.

With all of my card accounts I have it setup to send me an e-mail or text every single time a transaction takes place over a certain amount, which is $1 on my credit cards and only for on-line purchases for my debit, since I never use it on-line.

Last summer someone some how got our info and bought a Cadilliac Escalade and a Corvette and emptied our bank account. I FINIALY got GM to stop coming after me for the 2 cars (1 bought in New York, the other in Florida and I live in Maryland) and it took Bank of America MONTHS to refund our money and we still didn't get it all back! trust me this **** SUCKS! My credits still shot till the reporting burows(sp?) get off their asses and fix it. If it had happened before I got my G8 I'd NEVER would have been able to buy it with how my scores are now.

The only time I use my debit card is to withdraw cash from my own bank's ATM. I never use it for purchases. Too many scammers using fake point-of-sale machines and hidden cameras.

My buddy got hit a couple of years ago. The hoops he had to go through to get his money back were incredible.

All my purchases are cash or credit card. At least if the credit card gets compromised it's the bank money the thieves are screwing with, not my personal account.

Someone hacked my paypal account last year and got access to my Amex card and debit card. Sucked to get cleared. Paypal takes forever to investigate. The person didn't get much out of my checking account, but made out like a bandit with my Amex as it basically has no limit. The good thing is Amex rocks and took care of it for me immediately.
