Nice BMW 550i encounter

On the way to work. Haven't had any action in months. That's probably a good thing.

Hit a red light in a pretty speed-safe zone. Beyond the light, the 3 lanes merge down to 2. I pull in the right lane, some kind of BMW is slowing to line up at my left. I usually drive around in manual mode, but I slap it in Drive which is what I use at the strip. Whatever kinda BMW it is, I'm gonna go pretty hard.

Light turns, I hit the hammer. I slap the shifter for an upshift and knock it into..... neutral.... d'oh !! Forgot I was in Drive ! BMW rips by me and I see it's a newish 550i. Man, he probably thinks he ripped my head off, what a dope I am. Hope the next light turns so we can go again.

It turns. I pull up, windows down, a youngish woman smiling over at me. I say "I forgot what gear I was in !". She's thinking "yeah sure...".

Light turns green. I say "Let's go again !" and she hits it. This time I'm in Drive and DON'T slap the shifter. I am ahead by several cars by the time I drop throttle at maybe 75. She pulls up. "Very impressive ! What's in there ?" Quick answer: "LS3 from Corvette, cammed and tuned". Her: "You'd never guess... that was very unexpected !".

She was very cool about it. Smiling and thumbs up. I'm pretty sure she had no idea what I was driving. I'm actually surprised I pulled her like I did. The 550i has a TT V8 and the elevation here robs about 15% of power from NA motors. So at this elevation I'm making right around stock horsepower. I should still come out ahead, but it seemed like it should have been closer.

Glad you got a 2nd run in! Nice kill. A friend of mine just got an almost new 550 and I'm trying to get a run with him. I'll probably lose, but it'll be fun to see what will happen.

If your tune is decent, it should be a good match, perhaps in your favor. They seem to trap at 106-107 stock. If the DA is bad, it'll be in his favor though.

I did the same exact thing at the 1/4 mile track. Manual mode for short burnout. Put it back in D for the start. Starter guy yells at me to turn on my headlights and I forgot I went back to D. When it hits 5500 I slap into 2nd, oops, no, neutral. How embarrassing. Glad you got a 2nd run at her.

I don't think a race between that 550 and the GXP would ever be in the bimer's "favor". For one, they weigh about 400 lbs more than the GXP, they have slightly less HP and slightly more torque, but 1/4 mile times seems to be in the 13.0-13.2 range trapping 107-109. 0-60 is 4.8 for the auto (8 speed helps alot) and 5.1 in the manual. If anything it'd be a close race w/ the edge to the GXP.

You got headers, a tune, and a damn cam and like I mentioned, weigh 400 (probably more like 450 cuz I bet she had the auto) lbs less- i don't care WHAT the elevation is, that's a recipe for disaster every day of the week and twice on Sundays for that 550.

Now the new M5? Fughgetaboutit!!!

^^Agree. A buddy of mine has a new 550i w/eight speed auto. Not so sure he would have run me before my motor went the way of the dodo. Haven't really let him in on the changes that I am making with the new motor but I think he knows that any race when I get the car back this time will be useless...

Glad you got a chance to redeem yourself. I took a 2011-2012 550i down on the highway yesterday morning. The owner didn't see that one coming either.
