Figured we should start a thread and post hp levels, miles, is car a dd or weekend car? and what, if anything, has broken.
My g8 is just cammed with milled heads and flex fuel but im trying to decide if I wanna just leave it alone or if LSA will be worth it. Id be happy with 120 traps but I havent seen cammed g8s do that in street trim (no drag pack)
I dd mine and put 14k a year on it and beat on it regularly. I do all my own work and tuning but not much free time due to 16 month old. Conventional wisdom says just get a ctsv and sell g8 but I love the room the g8 has. Ctsv was way too small..
Following.. thinking about putting an LSA on mine but I beat on mine A LOT and DD it... plus I don't have the best cam for it and don't want to change cams since I just put this one in in april when I bought the car...
I'm just staying N/A lol. At least until the G8 becomes a 2nd car. Talked toa few people and 11.5:1 is gonna be too much comp. I'm gonna have to pull the heads and put stock ones back on, don't feel like doing that again. Also to do fueling "right" costs money, it's not really a 2-3k swap, I'd say it's more like 4-5k to do it right and reliably.
For my setup I will be right at about 4k invested in the build. That is with a Zl1 fuel pump. I'm not trying to break HP records so I'm sure it will be plenty safe.
4-5k is still impossibly inexpensive for what you get in terms of power.
This summer is a year on mine. Have a Vaporworx V pump with Deatchwerks 90lbs and did 598.98/589 on 91 octane gas with just a pulley. Bottom end has 115k miles on it and about 15k miles or so with the LSA on top. Wife drives it most the time with the kids. Happy with where it sits now, probably do more with it eventually but works for now.
I ran stock pump and injectors, but was running out of fuel. Doing the stock injectors with the vaporworx setup and V pump you won't have an issue. Only until I dropped my pulley size then I needed injectors.
Lol every day I change my mind. Yesterday I was just gonna leave it alone, then today I was gonna take the plunge and start ordering, now I'm thinking just maximize my N/A setup and leave it alone.
Been there done that with the blown motor and blown tranny stuff in my old car and it's not fun at all.
I've had the LSA on my daily driven G8 for nearly two years with no issues. I run a 160 degree thermostat and temps run mid-180's cruising, maybe up to 207 for a long idle on a hot day like today (93). I've drag raced it, road coursed it and driven it hard on the street with no problems with heating.
Granted i just got mine running just under two weeks ago, but it was hot and I've been driving it pretty aggressively, and also idled around for a couple hours in the heat during the Roadkill Nights 1/8 mile race a couple Fridays ago.
So far it has kept its temp in check very well, I'll see 205* coolant temp (stock thermostat). Nothing broken yet, I estimate it to be around 600rwhp or so on 93. Nothing fancy with cooling mods either; trans is no longer cooled through radiator, i added a deep pan and a couple small heat exchangers and it stays around 135*. Intercooler is factory style ZL1 and i'm using a stock V heat exchanger.
LS3 with a Livernois 1C cam, long tubes full exhaust, Vaporworx dual Walbro 450's, flex fuel kit (still have to do the e85 tune), 2.55 upper pulley and a ported blower.
For myself, the plan is to do a swap in about a month, but I also had similar questions. Out here in south central Kansas it can become an oven, 110+ degrees! I came back this weekend from a 2100 mile trip and was getting 23mpg avg on the V6. It would be nice if one could get similar numbers or better with the LSA on the 6.0l.
I'm going to wing it though and hope for the best! It is a DD as well.
Good replies guys def gave me some faith in doing this. With that being said, im gonna hold off until g8 is paid off since I wanna do it right and invest extra in the fuel system and possibly even putting a 6l90 in.
Going to just shoot for 11s at 118+ right now which I shouldnt be too far from. Found some 3.27s for 350 bucks im gonna throw in and do ricks air ram. Hopefully that gets me close.
Haha. If this was a few years back before my son came, the car would have been torn apart already. Tough to find the time while he is still this young.
Hwy is good, should be getting better than that combined though. 50/50 gets the worst economy better e30 or e70 - an unexplained phenomenon in research papers I've found. Good for safety margin but neither benefits of either fuel. Have you worked out your specific DCR?
Milled heads .030 and .040 cometic with 219 223 112 cam. So dcr is high. My trans tune is pretty aggressive and my 25 mph average is a lot of stop and go.
I'm interested to know your DCR, do you happen to know the IVC?
Clearance volume (or pour through plug hole) would be easy otherwise I assume:
Chamber volume is 64cc, stock pistons (not done or dish), gasket is 0.040" with 4.005" diameter, and std deck height?
Revisiting this. I am getting itch for a blower, so I am either gonna sell my g8 and get a ctsv or keep it, put it back to stock(ish), and pop the blower on. I only want to make 500-525 MAX since I am hoping this will allow the 6l80e to live. If it's still a gamble at that power level, then I'll prob just do CTSV.
Thing is I love the room the G8 has, it is great for my son in the back. CTSV seemed small when I looked at one.
A V2 is a good choice. I was also thinking of selling my G8 for a CTS-V couple preferably before my LSA install. Decided to keep it and glad I did. I like the rarity of the G8, size, style even though it's 8yrs old. Also doing all the work myself(esp. LSA install) and all other work has been great! With all the money invested there always seems to be more to do which is a good thing I think.
6l80 should hold 550rwhp no problem as long as you have a good tuner...
I build and tune all myself, so I am good to go in that regard.
After looking at pics of the V, I honestly think the G8 looks a lot better.
