Hey guys put in a 160 therm for summer. Worked great. Saw temps between 175 and 190 down from a struggle to keep it under 210.
Now the morning temps are 65 to 70. It will hit around 175 then I see the temp just instantly drop to 147 where it will stay until I hit a stop light or the oil temp eventually warms up. Anyone see this problem with the slp 160?
Can I just drill the stocker to get somewhere inbetween?
welcome to having the wrong t-stat in your car , our cooling system was made to keep the temps in the higher range
210 is near the highside of what they were designed to run on
with the 160 in the cooler temps the radiator is now getting to cool and why you see the drop , most people i know that will do the 160 for extreme summer temps go back to a 180-190 in the winter , where you need the higher temp
tuning wont really help when the temps are cooler just higher
I know was just surprised it ran that cold at 70 out. It would be totally useless in winter time. Seems like it was at max flow right at 160 degrees instead of tapering up.
Ill just swap a 180 in hopefully the fans can keep it cool next summer but I had a lot of problems keeping it under 210. But i did just find out my fan blade was cracked so hopefully replacing it helps. I had fans full blast at 200 degrees and still couldnt get under 210 on 85 to 90 degree days.
I've personally never ran anything but the OE thermostat in any of my LS vehicles. Some people are all for it, but I've never been one of them -- and this goes back to 2003 for me.
Stock is 187 Deg. If your temps are jumping around, I suspect you have air trapped and it needs to be bled. Unless you have a tuner and change the fan settings, you won't see much difference
Drilling hole in 180, not 160. I just want the car to be able to run 195-200 in the summer with the 180. Right now can't get it below 208-210. It makes a difference in the knock resistance.
not sure where you are at , not many places get hotter than here in phoenix , and with the stock t-stat mine has no issues , and ive got a big cam and stall , and stageup has the lsa sc and all required items
maybe need to get someone to look over the fan temps again ? or even check out your fans and make sure they are not weak , also check the ac system , if its not properly charged it can cause the engine temps to run higher , lastly make sure air can flow freely through the condenser and radiator
my old cavalier would run hot with the inner fender liners not being in , because the air would flow through the fenders and not the radiator
Left cap off over night, came back in the morning and the coolant went down a good 5 inches. Did this a couple times and it's running mid 190s now with oil temp fully warmed up.
For future reference run the car with cap off and heater on high until fully warm, squeeze your upper and lower hoses and keep topping off as the level drops. Put the cap back on and make sure the overflow is at correct level.
Also helps to have the pointed uphill. Air will head that direction.
