Car and Driver shows top speed of G8 GT is govener limited to 136. What's up with that?? I was expecting top speed in the 150's to keep up with the Bimmers.

do you really need to go 150+ tho

fastest i went was 135 in my old mustang when i was 18 and after i did it i realized how dumb i was for doing that on public streets(well i was on backroads out in the country but still stupid of me)

Agreed........please tell me the penalty for driving at 150+mph in America. In Australia it can earn you a new found same sex friend for an overnight stay in the lockup...loss of licence and a hefty fine on top of your sore ass.

The G8 is going to be the family car so I don't think the wife needs to be going 150+mph.

Put good tires on it and go to a tuner. All fixed. I agree though. I don't think I ever had my GTO over 100. Now my 95 vette, I saw 144 on it once.

If somebody's going that fast, they're not going to stop for the cops.. especially since chances are good they'll be able to lose them in a mile or two.

The NON summer tire version is at 127, I'll have to look for my summer tire calibration later but this was the easiest one to find ;)

The summer tires are only V-Rated so high 130's would make sense..

The spec sheet I have shows the sport package with P245/40R19-94W tires. That's a "W" speed rating, same as my GTO, which is 159mph if I remember. That is also the speed limiter on my '05 GTO, based on tire ratings. It is possible, though not probable, that the G8 Sport package might raise the speed limiter to match the tire rating.

Having said that, my Garmin GPS retains the top speed recorded during the time it is "on", and mine shows 129mph in the GTO. It is stable as a rock at 120, but near 130, you begin to think twice about letting it go on up (still pulling like a mule). It begins to get a bit "light" up there. Even on a wide open divided lane highway, there are too many deer crossing the roads where I live to be driving that fast.

I'm guessing you meant to say the same as your GTP, which would have had W rated tires on it hence the same speed rating (GTP guys should know 127 VERY well) The GTO IIRC is V or Z rated (It's cold I'm not about to go out and look lol)

I'll pull up the cal for a 19" summer tire car later and see if its higher just to settle this hopefully; now I want to know too! :D

You people must have small roads. Texas highways are very long and you can easily reach 150+. I have set the cruse control at 130 in my 98 SS Camaro on the way back from Houston to Austin for about 50 miles.

A very large auto group would gather on the weekends and "compare" each others vehicles. They would start at 100, then hit it. Of course we had look outs at each end of the huge 6 lane abandoned road so everything was pretty safe.

Granted, the G8 is plenty fast for the driving I do now. Maybe too fast, got to watch the tickets

Nope, '05 GTO M6. Came with "W" rated tires and still has "W" rated tires on it (245/45R17 95W - not originals, however). Factory skins were B.F. Goodrich -- not impressed with those, although early bad factory alignment specs ruined the original tires before a tech sheet came down to change specs. Car is perfect now. And I have no idea how far over 129 it will go 'cause it ain't going that fast with me in it, and I won't let anyone else drive it. :ibtl:

you can never outrun the police radio tho lol. if you flew past them here in my area theyd simply radio ahead and try to cathc you. a guy a few months ago got caught in his brand new viper he was goin like 120 something in a 45. His dodge viper is now the new D.A.R.E. vehicle

i would hope they up the governor as well, however i will tune the car anyways so it will be able to see those higher 3 digit numbers, not like ill ever go that fast but its reassuring if you know you can. fastest i have ever been is 161 in my cobra, top down and (tuner showed 161) speedo showed 150 barried. ive been over 170 in my buddies '93.5 supra years ago and wow, what a rush.

Well, it all depends on where you are. Here in Gainesville, FL, you could get away with it just a few miles out. The cops would just be watching their spots and I doubt there's a force large enough to have someone else stationed close enough on the same road to catch you. You could just keep on driving until they were out of sight and then turn on a smaller road and lose 'em. You could probably get 3/4 miles in between you and them before anybody else could get within 1 mile of you... but I don't exactly plan on trying it.

hahaha yea. here in IL they love to bust you for wahtever they can, specially like the guy in the viper. if they can bust you for something they will. least from my experiences and waht ive seen read inthe papers.

Yeah, think about it. Only brand new G8GT in town, you run. Not too hard to find you again unless you spend the next year parked in your garage with the door down, or sneak out at night and take your chances. Don't let Mama take it to the store for groceries, either.

Or, just enter it in an open road race, and check it legally! Lastly, a wheel dyno for $100!

Hit 150 in my gtp. Scarey scarey stuff. Just got a ticket for going 104 in a 55 NY state speed limit on the interstate =( So I shouldn't be approaching those speeds anytime soon. But, I do believe that if you are traveling at a rediculous speed without trying to evade police, they will lock you up. Probably take your car too.

Just to update this, testing a production car while the ECM speed limit is set to 127 the car seems to stop right at 139/140. This is different from the files we've seen before so I guess we'll see how it goes :)

Well I know mine will do at LEAST 130mph without any problems.

I don't know if the salesman was just full of it, but he told me he wasn't sure, but he thought that the cars were governed at 164mph.

There are several area roads in my area that are 4 lane, smooth flat, that would support a very short trip, and I plan on trying to find out what the top speed is.

I have a hard time believing that. Looking at the aerodynamics of the car, it would seem to me that the drag/power itself would keep the car from going much more than 160 in the first place.

Well, look at the Chyrsler 300 SRT8. That sucker will go over 170, albeit with more power though. None of the SRT8s have speed limiters I read.

I got mine up to 138mph today before I had to let off for traffic ahead of me... The car gets up to 130mph without any problem.. Around 138mph you can defiently start feeling the drag on the car kicking in. There is no reason this car shouldn't be able to hit 150mph. (Other than a governor)

Interesting. GTO's top out around 150-160. But it doesn't really matter to me b/c I've only had mine up to 127ish. Other than doing it in short bursts with no traffic on a straight road(which usually only happens at night and then you have to worry about deer) to get a quick adrenaline rush, going that fast offers me no other benefits.

A tune should remove it, I know vector has said they do with their tune package.

Outran six Ohio cops on back roads doing about 140mph in my Trans Am. Granted that was 15 years ago. Don't think I got the b*lls to do that anymore. Maybe not stupid enough.

What would a G8 GXP do if it was detuned? I heard that a detune would change the govenor settings. Again, not that I would be doing 150 mph but am curious more than anything.

Yep, almost hit 140mph today leaving our weapons range. (its WAY out in the woods off a recently paved, mostly abandoned highway). The engine said yes, fellow officer said no at 130mph, computer said no just after that. Tune on April 11th.

I was the test car for the program. The car's been great. I can't say I've pushed the top speed limiter yet, but overall, it's fast as hell.
