It's time for another G8 gathering in the greater SF Bay Area! We will meet on Saturday April 25th, 2009 in Castro Valley at 11:30AM, leave by 11:50AM to drive along Redwood Rd and Skyline Blvd in the Redwood Regional Park, and end up Orinda around 1:00PM for lunch.

I think it's time to start talking about a possible meet in the greater SF bay area. We did the San Jose location in Jan.

Some ideas for general areas this time in April: Peninsula, East Bay or Tri-Valley areas?

Also, what dates and times will work best for you?

I'm down for a meet! I have spent quite some time driving around the East Bay, so could stand to 'get out' a little... or could suggest a few roads around my area. Weekends work best for me, but I'm down for skipping out on work for a little drive (like I did today :gr_devil:).

If we do something in the daylight hours I'm game for taking a few photos.

As long as the kids do not have sports the day of the meet, I am there. I have been a long time Mustang owner (still have a 93 SSP) and enjoyed meeting others and seeing the cars. Not to mention, it is an excuse to take the car on a little drive!

I've never been to a meet/cruise before (never had a worthy vehicle) so don't know how these work. What types of drives do people like? I can suggest some curvy roads in the East Bay, but what sort of time do people like to commit? Hour? Two? Five? Do people want to do a loop (return to the same place)? or more of a drive to a destination then break-up from there (like after lunch or something)?

Personally, I like the two-lane curvy roads. If we travel Todd's suggested route, let's meet up at a shopping plaza parking lot near a 580 exit and travel to the downtown area of Orinda. Unless there's a rest'rant at the Grizzly peak that isn't too expensive.

Let's also get a day picked out. It sounds like a Saturday would be good again. I believe I will be available on the 4th, 11th, 18ndst and 25th.

I was just throwing that road out... I don't know if it is too long/short or leads to any places with good food, etc. (that's totally not something I'm good at finding). I can suggest more roads in this are all the way up to a 6 hour drive (yes, I am :nuts: sometimes).

April 18th probably would not be the best day for me (GF's B-Day and I'm sure she wants my attention not on my car :nono:), but the other Saturdays are clear at the moment. Anytime would be good... I tend to head-out relatively early for drives to minimize road traffic, but if we were only doing an hour drive late-morning would work well with a lunch.

Today I drove this route (plus some) and I'm thinking that part of it (specifically the top part of Pinehurst Rd) is not the best for a cruise. It would probably make better sense avoiding that section of the road and just connecting up to Skyline Blvd.

Also, the bicycle traffic on weekends is quite a bit more (~10x) what I had when I drove on Friday. The downhill sections are good (they go fast enough to keep out of your way), but some of the uphill parts can be slow to get a clear place to pass.

Ok, so I'm proposing April 25th and some sort of route from Castro Valley to Orinda. We can meet up in Castro Valley at 11:30 for the drive and meet for lunch in Orinda at 12:30. If this sounds good, let's start looking for places to meet in those two cities.

Starting close to 580 in Castro Valley would probably be the simplest... then head out on Redwood Rd. Anyone know of anywhere to go for lunch, etc. in the Orinda/Moraga/Pinole area? Only comment that I would make is that the stretch of Pinehurst that connects into Skyline is quite curvy and narrow... you are also on the inside of the corner (next to the rocks/wall) and the Saturday I went through there were bicyclists (and even a hiker) on the road. Taking Redwood all the way to Skyline and then around would probably be a more 'open' route (although you miss out on two nice hairpins and some other curvy bits).

PS - if people wanted to drive South on Pinehurst I didn't feel the sections were as restrictive (going downhill the bikers are moving faster). Just a reminder, if you have walkie-talkies, please bring them with you on the 25th. It's not an absolute necessicity, but a very-nice-to-have. I have a pair, (one for the lead and one for the tail), but other walkie talkies will allow others to keep in communication during the drive.

There is a good chance of rain this weekend, so the question that has been posed is whether we move the meet location from McD's to some place with a covered parking lot. Personally, the rain won't make me melt, but how do others feel?

I'm no witch... I love the rain and it should keep most of the bicyclists off the roads as well!

If it is raining it may make it difficult to socialize and to have hoods/doors open for viewing mods, etc. I took a quick look on Google Earth for a parking structure or something, but didn't see anything. I'd suggest the Dublin BART parking structure (huge, free, etc.), but it is a bit out of the way from the driving route.

Any ideas?

Great seeing you all today. Would have been nice if the McDonald's lot wasn't closed... I wonder if anyone showed-up but left? Sorry for driving around in circles towards the end, but listening to a supercharged G8 in a tunnel is nice!

Same here, didn't even fix my noise issue completely...

How many of you guys would be willing to let me hear your exhausts if you went aftermarket already?

Any exhaust is pricey for this car so being able to hear some first would be nice.

That was a lot of fun driving with you guys yesterday. I really liked the route as well - nice and twisty and some great views of the Bay. :driving:

And wow, is Ron's supercharged G8 bad ass or what? I was having fun just listening to it downshifting and especially through the tunnel! I didn't realize he has the track II as well - it seemed like he didn't have to hit his brakes nearly as much as I around the turns. No wonder!!

Todd - great job leading the pack. I thought the pace was perfect and even without the walkie - I had no trouble following you guys (didn't want to make everyone stop to give back the walkie -cause I had to take off before lunch). Great looking pictures as well - yes, you have the real camera! :wink2:

It was a great meet. It was cool getting to meet you guys. Everyone's car looked great. The weather, scenery and route were all excellent. Super pics Todd. I hope the one's I took of you turned out.
