: What did you pay for your extended warranty?
joeyg 03-10-2009, 04:33 PM Hey Guys, what did you all pay for your extended warranties, if you don't mind saying.
I'm looking for the length of time, kilometres and deductible amount if any?
Thanks
Joe
Mike Jung 03-10-2009, 11:59 PM I am going to go out on a limb here & say NOT WORTH IT !
The cars already have a GM Canada factory warrenty.
3-years / 60K km bumper-to-bumper warranty.
&
5-years / 160K km powertrain warranty, with $0 deductable.
&
8-years / 130K km on the PCM & catalytic converters
I was offered to extend the warranty by a GM extended warranty up to 84-months/7-years (& I can't remember the mileage limit) with $0 (I think it was, or was $100 ?) deductible for just under $3,200.
& they would "throw in" 2 of these options at my choice:
Rust proofing (thick tar type), leather protection, or paint sealant.
Said rust proofing was $600 option by itself.
I did not buy it.
On my '99 Grand AM: I did get a 6-year/100K km powertrain GM extended warranty with a $100 deductible for like $1800; back in '98.
I broke even using it.
But they had my money for 3-years before the extended warranty even took effect.
It isn't like the old days were the GM Canada factory warranty ended after 3-years / 60K km.
& if you wanted a GM Canada extended Powertrain warranty, you bought it.
In conclusion:
Do not buy the GM extended waranty.
As the factory warranty pretty much has you covered.
Save the money; & use it as needed for repairs.
G8 Toronto 03-11-2009, 08:27 AM My thoughts...
I DID buy the warranty because I have rarely owned a car that breaks down severely before 60K. Most of the break down happens the day after 60K....it's like they build the parts knowing this. I know cars are built much better these days and I bought the ext. warranty based on the 3 tranny's I had to replace on my V6 Mustang in the 90's plus the countless head gasket repairs. My justification for buying is that this is NOT a domestic car with parts in Kentucky or Ontario. It is about as exotic as it gets with parts in the farthest place on earth from my location.
My advice is if you plan to drive the GT harder than you would your Malibu, then I would recommend the ext. warranty. It's only insurance and if you have one tranny issue under the life of the car, it practically pays for itself. Really it's a crap shoot, I'm not bothering to roll the dice as I have had problems with "sport" cars I've owned in the past and I drove those like a grandma. I will be driving my GT at times like Andretti.

Did you miss the fact GM Canada now gives powertrain warranties for up 5-years / 160K km ?
It isn't like the old days that all factory warranty on bumper-to-bumper & the powertrain ended at 3-years / 60K km.
TryMe 03-11-2009, 12:54 PM I bought a 5 year/100K warranty because:
-the powertrain warranty is extremely limited. Don't believe me, then look up exactly what it covers.
-Labour rates are generally over $100/hour. The average repair order in canada is 2.5 hours + parts. Having worked at several import & domestic dealerships, the bill can add up very quickly. I don't want to be on the hook for things like: CEL, various sensors, heated seat elements, the audio system, the sunroof. These are the type of things that can nickel & dime you to death...
My GMPP plan also gives me road hazard on the tires. If my car is in the shop for just a couple hours in years 3 & 4 the warranty will more then pay for itself. There's no way i would pay $3000 + for a warranty but with a little negotiation, I have peace of mind for under $1300.
mahun 03-11-2009, 01:23 PM Well I went for the extended warranty.
It was about $3000 for 6 years 140,000km. I know the power train warranty goes to 160,000 but to replace anything electronic now a days you are talking hundreds of dollars and that just for the labour. I figure a couple warranty repairs between 60 and 160 thousand will pay for itself in the long run.
I also went for a tire and rim warranty for $390. This is for 160,000 and covers any damage to the rims and the tires that are presently on the rims. If a tire needs repair more than 3 times they replace the tire. I thought this was a good deal considering this is the 7th new Pontiac I’ve owned and ever one has had a RIM bent at some point. Also one 19” goes for at least a grand
2008 G8 MENDEZ 03-11-2009, 04:31 PM i paid 1400 for 5 years 100,000 mi bumper to bumper 0 deductable.
joeyg 03-11-2009, 06:23 PM i paid 1400 for 5 years 100,000 mi bumper to bumper 0 deductable.
G8 Mendez are you in Canada...that sounds like a good deal.

Hey TryMe, do all of the extended warranties come with a tire hazard warranty, because I am hearing some people are buying a stand alone tire hazard warranty when they already have the tire hazard warranty.

Joe
The road hazard is a fairly low cost option option that can be added on to the GMPP warranty.
This is something that is fairly recent in Canada(not sure about the US)...
Usually, GM dealers have the MSRP of the GMPP warranty set to include $1000 markup. So if the dealer tells you the MSRP is $2g's, the dealer is paying $1g for it....
omegadood 03-11-2009, 08:36 PM I was able to get a 5 year 100,000k warranty with road hazard on the tires for $1200 and i agree with Tryme the power train warranty is very limited!
