: G8 Launch vs GTO Launch

Rewind to 2003, a candy apple red GTO with 18" wheels and SAP has just been launched. How does the reaction to the G8 compare to the GTO?

The way I see it there will be pros and cons that will determine peoples views:

Pros
Brand new car vs 3 year old car based on a 6 year old platform.
Better execution of the 'Pontiacisation'
Not using a nostalgic name

Cons
4 doors
Um - can't think of any others.

Thoughts ?

I think it's much better. The G8 is true Pontiac fashion(I know it's not really a Pontiac, but it's what they need). It's edgy, muscular, and powerful. The GTO was, dare I say it, bland. Almost everyone will admit it. It looks like a GP. Good job on the G8 Pontiac.

I think this launch is much better because the pipeline from Australia to the USA has already been established thanks to our GTO's. Not to knock my car, but I felt the styling of the GTO was less than that of the Monaro, but this time around, I think the G8 looks better than any versions of it's Ausy counterparts. Even though the power is a hair lower than we would like, to the general market (not just us speed freaks) it will sell and sell in big volume. I predict at least twice the volume of the GTO if the General can pump them that fast. It will be fun to see.

The one new feature that I am most interested in is the 6 spd automatic trans. If it is set up right, the "Gator" could be in the hot territory of the power band more than on my "Goat". I can hardly wait to read serious "hands on" car reviews in the publications.

Sounds about right. I completely agree that the execution of the pontiac grill is much smoother and flows better this time around, almost better than the VE. :) Although I'm not sure if the GTO would have sold more if it had been called something else, that's just something that we will never know.

Not sure what drugs your smoking. Not too many GTO owners will say that the GOAT was "bland" either. Im not getting rid of the GTO. Launch wise, I think the G8 will do a lot better for the family guy wanting a power horse cuz of the 4 doors.

I'm a family guy who has the power... just need the power with 4 doors now. And I'd prefer a 6 speed manual :)

Well I must be smoking the same chit too b/c it does look like its lost in the 90's with the other pontiacs. Then again thats where I find the beauty in it. A car that has bland styling with the performance of a bull, a modern sleeper.

Edit: Looks like lounge posts don't count anymore. :(

Move the 4 doors to the Pros section. It is more convienant for your friends to get in and out of. Plus there is more enjoyment when you are in a four-door vehicle and you can out run some who has a bias against four door vehicles. It really pisses them off to be beat by a four door. :wiggle:

4 doors - twice as good as two.
That, plus a REAL trunk, are big selling points to me.

I really think the new g8 will launch better, applies to a larger audience.

Ya, I think the G8 will have less of a problem with traction. (D'oh)
