Initial mileage would probably be pretty disappointed but it usually improves as everything gets broken in. MPG after a couple 1000 on the odometer would be more of a "real-world" indicator than early after delivery.

Just something to keep in mind...

True, but if the GT starts out at 10mpg it won't hit 25mpg in a million miles.

My first go round was 17.8 mpg at 280 miles. This last time around with a premium fill up looks like about 16 mpg. That's a pretty even city/hwy mix. I do feel the need to give it the boot from a dead stop though. Not sure the premium makes a difference performance wise and probably does hurt fuel econ.

This is pretty good considering Mike is one of the most lead footed persons that i know. Im not sure if hes still taking it easy on it though but by the stories hes been telling i dont think hes babying it by any means. The DOD and 6 speed trans should be rewarding to light footed drivers.

2nd tank of gas (91) netted me 16mpg.

That includes 2 passes at the drag strip and about 6 autocross runs along with a 70 mile trip averaging 90 bouncing in and out of traffic.

It's a 6.0 V8 with 361hp pulling almost 4,000 lbs. What did you expect?

With break-in they should pick up at least 1-2 mpg.

I have been more conservative with the second tank, mostly due to weather. I was getting about 14.5mpg in the Stang when I traded her in so the 17mpg I'm geting in the G8 is impresive for such a large car.

Just for a little context here, EPA for the BMW 335i ( automatic – to compare something like ‘apples to apples’ ) is: 17 \ 26.
( G8 GT is 15 \ 24. )
The somewhat more similar ( size, weight, HP ) BMW 550i is EPA rated at 15 \ 23.

And reported numbers for the 335i on this very active BMW forum are all over – from 15 \ 16 to well over 20:

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=264225&highlight=mpg

I don’t see a similar thread for 550s in a quick search – but this includes one driver reporting 10 MPG:

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=263182&highlight=mpg

My ** GUESS ** is that the G8 V8 will be capable of mid 20s, ** IF ** kept below 75 MPH on a long & relatively level highway run, with very light traffic. Perhaps 26 or 27, even. Any volunteers?

I’d be happy to run this ‘experiment’ with someone else’s GT.

Just drop it off at my house this weekend . . .

i would think with DOD, the car would get atleast 26 mpg on the highway and around 18/19 in the city. 6 gears, tacking below 2 grand on the highway at 65-70mph, DOD, no reason this car should get 26 on the highway. Like I said, I am looking to get around 350-400 on a single tank. I only drive highway to work and home, 70 miles a day X 5 days, 350. 19 gallon fuel tank, should be close. I just want some highway mileage numbers

Not for me. Just completed my 660 mile round trip, almost all highway. Only got 19.2MPG according to the computer. After the tune, I got 22.2 on the way back, but I really don't think I could've gotten it up to 24-25. Maybe if I drove 60 the whole way and not 75.

I bet with an intake and exhaust you should get a least another mpg or more, expecially after the break in with your tune

6.0L is a lot to feed. My '05 GTO gets around 24 highway if I'm running speed limits on divided lane highways. Around 22 overall with some city mixed in but mostly highway. I would expect maybe a couple miles better highway but not city.

On another thread, I posted the long list of parameters considered by the AFM system in determining when to go 4V mode. It would appear that only steady speed highway light load driving would meet all the conditions. I thought it would idle in 4V in traffic, but apparently that would cause too much engine vibration.

And you would lose that V8 rumble once you change the exhaust.

About the Bimmers: most of those reported mileages are during "sport" driving (I partook in filming some videos for them). The 5 series was while on a track. In track driving, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution got 3.5 miles per gallon according to Jeremy Clarkson, the Ford GT got 4 mpg, and the 335d got 12.

In "non tyre shredding mode" expect the G8 to get up to 22, the 550i has gotten up to 26, and when babied, the 335i has gotten up to 30 stock.

But thats all when driving lightly. I think all of us here will be doing everything in our power to drive MPG as low as possible:burnout:

Don't take me the wrong way, I was just dreaming mileage would be on the upper-end of the EPA estimate. I commute 90 miles/day in heavy traffic. I am not so sure the G8 would make sense for me. Being responsible sucks :bootyshake:!

Another point of reference, according to EPA and adjusted to 2008 preocedures a 2003 Grand Prix GTP (my current vehicle) should return 1 mpg better than teh G8 GT, just 1. ANd my current day-in-day-out ave is 22 in winter and 23 in summer wit has high as 30 on trips. So 21-22 will work. 14-17 might not @ $4/gal

Oil closed today at $101.47/barrel for April delivery, gasoline was at $2.60/gallon wholesale for April delivery. Add your state&local taxes to that plus about $.40 and you get the approximate retail price of a gallon of gas. All the brains on CNBC said commodities (oil, gold, nat gas, etc.) should continue to sell off as the dollar, one of the main culprits in the current price, raises against foreign currencies. Guess that means we can plan for gas prices staying closer to last summers $3.10 - $3.30 range again this year, and wont be too disappointed.

“The system is so discreet you can't detect when it's activated. The only clue is the fuel consumption average. The best economy achieved on the trip is 9.5 litres/100km, not bad for a V8 sedan loaded with luggage and making good time. The average for the whole trip is 11.2L/100km, which brings the total fuel bill to less than $500.”

9.5 = approx 24.5 MPG
11.2 = approx 21.0 MPG

Just give them time. My Charger SRT8 got me 11mpg in the cold of winter out of the lot. By June, it got me 24mpg on a nasty hot summer trip of 2000 miles. That included some mad 100 mile dashes and a race with a 911 Turbo along with some speed limit slogging.

After a few fill-ups, I don't let it get below a 1/4 tank because gas is cheaper on base and it's about 30mi commute, I avg ~19mpg. That's with heavy afternoon traffic to work and light traffic, but lots of lights on the way home. I've gotten past feeling the need to experience the power at every light so I'm expecting that avg to rise. I'm taking a trip through the mountains in the morning so it'll be interesting to see what I avg.

Took it out for a nine hour cruise around Hell's half-million acres, aka AZ. It was a little over 600mi total.

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a295/lonewolfz28/roadtrip2.jpg

From the house in Tucson, I took I-19 to I-10 to State Hwy 77 north all the way to I-40 at Holbrook. I had to gas up there but it was 252mi at a 56.2mph avg. It's mostly twisty roads and 5-9% grades. There was about 15mi. of city driving at the beginning. I kept the cruise control on as much as possible at 5-10 over the limit. All of that and I still averaged 21.7 mpg hand calculated. According to the DIC I got 22.2 avg.

After gassing up at Holbrook, it was a straight shot West on I-40 at 80-85mph against a very strong headwind. When at 85mph I could only manage ~18.3 mpg according to the DIC. When the speed limit dropped to 65 (I went 73) it would creep up to 19mpg. Once I hit Flagstaff and started South on I-19, I rose to 22 in places even though I was still doing 73-84mph. Not fighting the headwind and a lot of down hill stretches really helped. Had some city driving mixed in after switching over to I-10 at Phoenix, mainly because they decided to close I-10 East completely at one point and detour through city streets. What a crock! Finally got around that and back on I-10 for an easy shot back down to Tucson. The second leg was 351mi. at a 73.4mph avg and I got 22.22mpg over that tankful hand calculated, although the DIC said 21.7avg. I did reset it when I gassed up at Holbrook.

So, real world mpg with a variety of terrains, speeds, conditions (most of them adverse) came out to 21.7 to 22.22 over 600mi. I didn't do any gimmicks, I drove like I always do, i.e. not sparing on the gas pedal, passing everything that wasn't doing 5mph over the limit whenever possible.

If I had been heading East with the wind on I-40 instead of West fighting it, I bet the mpg on that tankful would've been over 23. That wind was like a wall when you pulled around a truck. You could really feel the difference when you turned South and weren't fighting it.

Still not bad for averaging over 73mph.

Yup, I had to work last weekend, so this was my first real chance to take it out for a full scale shakedown cruise.

I LIKE IT!!!

I will need that first free oil change from the dealership as soon as I can schedule it though.:o

While it's in there I also want the tech to check out a vibration in the steering wheel between 45-55mph. I feels like one of the front wheels might be slightly out of balance.:sneaky:

Hi Ray,

The 73MPH avg was just from Holbrook to Tucson via I-40 (75mph speed limit with most people doing at least 80), I-19 (55-65-75 speed limit and I got passed several times doing 70-73-84 respectively) and I-10 (55-65-75 speed limit-same deal).

I was actually avg'ing 79mph and 21.7mpg until I hit Phoenix.

I use 91. I'm still enjoying the power so I want to get as much out of it as possible.

It's already in the mid-80's here temp-wise and with bumper-to-bumper traffic the temps go up. The possibility of inducing a knock situation will only get worse through the summer. I really don't want to push my luck yet with 87. Maybe next winter.

Maybe with a tailwind, straight-and-level and reasonable speeds I might be able to pull it off. A leaner tune probably wouldn't hurt either.
