Is the factory sunroof good? Would you rather have a dealer installed aftermarket? What are the pros and cons of each?

I waited and got a car that was not in the first 888 to get the sunroof cause aftermarket ones are always poorer quality than oem. And after there warranty is gone or the place that installed it is gone you S.O.L.

Anyone got one yet with the sunroof? Please post up pics with it open and closed. Does it auto close when the car is turned off? Sunshade liner inside? Any wind noise?

Here...this thread is full of pics from my car:

http://www.g8board.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1298

To answer your questions:

No, it doesn't auto-close when the car is shut off.
There is a sunshade on the inside that opens when the sunroof retracts.
It's been too cold to really drive much with it open, but for the few minutes that I did drive with it open, I didn't notice any wind noise.

Later in that thread, there are some interior pics so you can see what the headroom looks like.

Hope this helps.

Mike

I don't know by how much, but the structural rigidity of the frame is somewhat compromised when you cut a hole in the middle of it. I imagine that in vehicles with sunroofs from the factory - the roof is cast that way and possibly reinforced around the frame to compensate.

This is not to say that your vehicle will be unsafe, but its structural rigidity will be less than before.

If you want a sunroof, I would wait for a non-888 sunroof model. I'm sure as a $900 option there has been some reinforcement around the frame from the factory.

Why do people like sunroofs? If you want air in the car lower the window. Hate the look of the open sunroof tracks, the loss of headroom and the extra weight and cost.

It's all about HEADROOM! I went back and looked at the specs for my '05 GTO and the front seat headroom (no sunroof, of course) is listed at 37.3". The G8 is 38.7". I have about 1-1/2" of headroom in my normal driving position in the Goat, but the only G8 I could get has the #$@! sunroof on it, so if they can't get that roof into 1-1/2" of space, it ain't gonna work for me. :bomb: I sure hope I don't have to start all over again and find a GT with no friggin' sunroof. That could take months....into the '09 model run.

There is usually less wind noise then with a window down.
You can have the rear of the sunroof open when it raining with out water getting in.
When the sunroof is open you get better ventilation
It's nice to see something besides the interior roof of your vehicle.
During a warm summer night I like to see the stars in the night sky
I like it as much as you seem to dislike it
It's all about personal preferences.

Open tracks? The G8 sunroof slides into the roof not on top of it.
Weight? What's a few pounds for something that make driving more pleasurable?
Headroom? For myself and my wife headroom is not a issue.
Cost? Well worth it for something I enjoy.

Different strokes .....

Most cars are built with minimal headroom for tall persons because lowering the profile reduces wind resistance with the associated decrease in drag, increase in fuel economy and top end. Since the external profile must be maintained (an economic decision), the sunroof must occupy a couple of inches of interior headroom. The resulting decrease in interior headroom is OK for short people, but there are a lot of us who simply cannot sit upright in a car with a sunroof. It also adds about $1,000 to the price. Worth it? Not if you can't use it.

I don't really care why people like sunroofs; what really bugs me is how difficult it is to get a car nowadays without one. I'm just glad Pontiac gave me a choice with the G8. :burnout:

I specifically waited for a GT with a sunroof. There was a red 888 in the showroom without one that I passed up on. I've not had a car with a factory sunroof before, but have had an aftermarket one before and loved it. I'm a bit disappointed with the factory sunroof. With it wide open, you hit about 55mph and the roof shakes like mad. You can't see out the RV mirror because of the distortion. Is that normal, or a bad GM design flaw? I noticed that there is a wind break bar that comes up when open, but it doesn't seem to be doing the job. Anyone else notice this?

+1. Sunroofs are ugly, take away headroom and lighten your wallet.

Their only value is for spotting flying cops.

I never had a sun/moon roof and did not want one but bought an Acura and had no choice...now I like them!

Enjoy the extra light, esp on cloudy days, flip the tilt and you get a nice vent w/closed windows, crack rear windows and better vent...nice on a clear warm night.... keep it closed at speed but open the undercover for light...zero problems for four years...

6' 3-4" and fit well in Acura with head room listed same as G8..will have to see a G8 with one to check...only car with sun roof that I do not fit in is the G-37 coupe....some will like some will not...waiting on 09..

At 6'2", I was thrilled when my "loaded, according to the dealer", G8-GT did NOT have a sunroof. I test drove a red G8 with a sunroof and need the extra 2 inches or so that you get by not having one installed.

I have no headroom issues and I'm 6'8"...
I think I'll even fit with a helmet for track days.

What is a 888 sunroof?

The 888 G8's are the first 888 G8's that were built and have a badge in the car designating what number of the 888 that you have. They were all 2008 models. From what I can tell from the post. It sounds like the 888 G8's did not have the sunroof option in them.
