Well I decided 1 month was long enough. So I am giving Borla the finger on this one. Nothing against their product, they seem to have a hard time producing them though.

I am removing my SLP Headers and selling them to my brother who just purchased an '08 GT, which was convenient :).

I ordered the Kooks 1 3/4 LT's with the Catted X-pipe, and the SLP PowerFlo Axleback. Have everything already except for the Powerflo's which will be here on Monday, thanks to Maryland Speed for their help on this they really do a great job!

Yeah, Im still waiing for theose Borla's to. Im pushing 2 months though! My first order was from LMPerformance and I cancelled that and ordered from MarylandSpeed, STILL no Borla. Man this is getting so frustrating!

The excuse that Borla gave MD Speed was they are waiting on flanges or something. Its not that its taking a month its the fact that they kept pushing the ship date back and back and back again. First it was 2 weeks then it got kicked to another week then the third time Borla said it would be another two more weeks.

Yes sucks about Borla.. Maryland Speed told me last week the 4/14 is what Borla told them when the next Borla shipment was coming out. Is that what Maryland Speed told you guys. They also said that Borla didn't expect to sell so many..They sell more I bet if they made a axle back but doubt if that would happen.

i also ordered my borla exhaust from maryland speed a month ago, i called them yesterday and they told me borla said the systems will be sent to the vendors on monday which means that the vendors will have them by the end of the week, and we should all have our exhaust on the week of the 20th!!!!!!!!!! cross your fingers, but dont hold your breath

LOL, I just got my Kooks and SLP bolted up today. Sounds great, its not obnoxiously loud which is what I wanted. I noticed a slight resonance with the SLP Headers, not so with the Kooks system. Very well made. The SLP Axleback is nice, the tips are an aquired taste, I wasnt sure about them until I saw them on the car.

The only issue I have with the SLP system are the inlet pipes that connect from the X-pipe to the Muffler. .....ummm they look like scraps off of a floor. The whole exhaust is nice stainless steel except for this small section of pipe. Its not that big of a deal but if you pay for something that says "Constructed Entirely from Stainless Steel", that is what I expect. Oh well, they sound pretty damn good though.

I will be heading back next week for the dyno tune, will post numbers and possibly a sound clip then.

Thx for the clip.

And how's the drone when cruising on the freeway?

I had the chance to take it out on the freeway today, with all the windows closed-stereo off and if you are light on the throttle, there is only a faint hum. It does of course get louder when you start to accelerate harder for passing and such. I will say that I definitely notice AFM kick in where before I had the borla put on, I didn't notice it at all. Needless to say, I will be getting AFM tuned out.

No it bolts to your stock cats.

Hmm, alright. This is my deal... I just ordered the 1 3'4" Kook LTs, with a Roto intake, but I have no idea what to do for the exhaust. Are the borla and corsa systems catless? Or am I just dumb?

Yes they don't come w/cat's. They bolt up to your stock cat's. it goes, exhuast manifolds, then cat's, then your (fill in blank) aftermarket catback system.

Hangtime204
04-19-2009, 08:27 PM
Thanks for the input guys. So I can run the kook LT's, with the stock cats, and the Borla cat back system?
Cause the way Im understanding this is, is that the stock manifolds are like shortys, which bolt up to the cats, then they bolt up to the cat-back portion. Now with the kook lts... they replace the stock shortys and the cats... and if I ran the LTs with the borla system, it would be catless. Correct?

wag42
04-19-2009, 08:35 PM
You can't run Kook's LT's w/a catback system. You can run the SLP's w/high-flow cat's. Most LT's don't match up w/a "off the shelf" catback system.

Hangtime204

Are you sure about the SLP Header? Because I was looking for the same setup! My other option was Kooks Mid-Length Header w/ High Flow cats!!!!

Hangtime204
04-19-2009, 08:52 PM
Yikes, this **** is so confusing... I think I'm going to have to go with the Kooks entire system now... at least the x-pipe portion. ****'s gonna be like $2300.. fack! Minus the Roto intake that I just ordered... I'm just gonna go with kooks. The axle back portion can be swapped... but whatever.
http://www.gravanatuning.com/cart/cart.aspx?cmd=add&prod_id=3905&qty=1
I already ordered the LT's, and the x pipe and axle back are on there way... can't believe its so much for an axle back system.

wag42

Kooks makes a "mid length" header (1 3/4") w/high flow cat's that connects to a stock (or after-market) cat-back. If that's not the waay you want to go, call any of the "Kooks" vendors and ask them what you'll need. They sell a axle-backs, so all you need is what connects it to the headers.

Here is how it breaks down if you want a "bolt on" system;

If you want Kooks LT headers you need to purchase their X-pipe (two versions with or without cats). Then you go with an axle back system, kooks makes one, magnaflow, slp, etc.

If you want a Borla Cat-Back system you have two header options, Kooks Mid-length headers, which are basically short tubes with high flow cats, or SLP LT's, The SLP headers come with high flow cats and bolt to any cat-ack including your factory cat-back.

2300 is about right for a full exhaust including headers....plus install of course.

Thats for the feedback guys! We have 4 more coming in early middle of next week that are unsold. After that I am not sure when we will see more.

As for the cheapest full LT Header/exhaust setup...we actually have a pretty smoking deal. Basically Kooks 1 3/4" LT's, Catted Kooks X-pipe, and Magnaflow axleback for $1820 (no coating available on this package). I run this same setup on my G8 and gained 45 rwhp.

To me, it isn't too bad. It vibrates the steering wheel a little when you are holding your mph between 60 and 70. Though it stops even when you accelerate slightly. To be honest, I could live with it... but just choose not to.

So, did you have the Borla catback exhaust then remove it because of the drone/afm vibration? Just curious.

Thanks...

No, I love the sound of the borla catback, and don't mind a little drone. I plan to leave it on. I'm just going to have AFM tuned out eventually. I remote started my car this morning from the kitchen, and the exhaust rumble was vibrating the ceiling fan light. :wink2:

Does it seem too overpowering? I am interested in this catback. I am 45 and want it to have the "V8" sound, but probably not overpowering like when I was in my twenties. It's my wifes daily driver, and she could care less about the sound-although she probably would care if it does overpower you (then "her" sound would be overpowerin!).

Thanks DZL for the insight. I know the Corsa sounds really good and no drone, but it's really expensive. I may have to try some magnaflow axle-backs. They're only $420/shipped, and being an axle-back, I would imagine drone wouldn't be an issue since it's still mainly a stock exhaust.

Looks like Borla put two driver sides rear sections of exhaust.
Borla sucks beware..now my car sits up on stands in garage with no exhaust
waiting to see what Maryland Speed can do for me.
Quality control seems to be lacking at Borla..this is what you get for $1000 dollars..
unexceptable..

I just received my tracking number as well. They must have received them today! Unfortunately, I live on the west coast so I have a long wait!

PS: Not unfortunate that I live on the west coast, just the distance it has to travel. Remember, as Jim Morrison wrote in the end, "the west is the best".:wink2:

My Borla system came in today, me and a friend got it onto the car in about an hour and a half. Toughest part was getting the stock exhaust off after the effects of a northern winter, but all in all it didn't take as long as I had thought it would. Fitment was good, I might put some washers in the cross member to make sure the x-pipe will clear over heavy bumps. I went through some construction area that had some severe bumps and I think I heard it hit one time, nothing major at all though.

As for the sound, I really like it, you can tell it's there but without being overpowering. The drone doesn't seem very noticeable to me. I had three passengers in it tonight, a friend and two girls, and nobody had a bad thing to say. From inside the car at low RPMs, it definitely differs from the stock setup, WOT seemed somewhat similar to what I had with the OTR intake. Hearing it start up from behind the car, the sound has a nice rumble to it, I've yet to have somebody take it for a drive so I can listen during a drive-by.

I give a thumbs up to Borla, seems to me like they've built a nice system. Also big thanks to Maryland Speed for getting this to me as quickly as they did, left their facility at 4:40pm on Thursday and was at my house in northwest PA by noon Monday.

I'm sure that helped, mine has about 12,000 on it and I had to use the better part of a can of WD40 to help some of the bolts come off. This winter did a number on them.

Swapped the stock one back on today, and took them less than 20 mintues... LOL, the stock system is basically one piece and makes it very easy to reinstall...

I do like the Borla, just a little too loud in the rear seat with 2 young boys back there, that's why i took it off and have to sell it... :(

Are you kidding me?! I can't wait to have my exhaust installed just so I can drown out my 5-year twin boys' constant fighting and yelling and screaming and crying and and...:banghead::banghead::banghead:

sorry to hear..ya my wife doesn't like it says it's too loud. I think it sounds great until the damn AFM turns on it sounds awfull and enoying.
Going to get a tune and have the AFM turned off and think will sound a lot better cruising down highway.

Yeah I noticed that too. As a temporary thing until getting AFM tuned out, if I'm just cruising down the interstate I put it into 6th gear in manual mode to "disable" it.

What kind of mileage decrease are you guys seeing for tuning out AFM or cruising in M6?

I'm not really one to track my mileage too closely, but IIRC disabling AFM will make a very small impact on your mileage, nothing big.

thanks I didn't know putting in M6 would turn off AFM. Will have to do that till I figure out which tune to get.

That's the setup I want to do, did they take anything off their list price for the SLP's?

Maybe you guys should check the kits before you send them. You guys (and Borla) sent me two right intermediate pipes and no left! Not exactly what I was expecting from what is supposedly the best exhaust system you can get...

AFM cannot be run with a M6. The drive line vibration would be very very uncomfortable. Watch your tach when afm kicks in on a A6 it usually jumps a few hundred rpm because it unlocks the the converter to help eliminate some vibration. The reason the use afm is to help reduce pumping loss. They can have the throttle blade open further in 4cyl mode which makes the engine more efficent by reducing pumping loss. A engine is the most efficent at wot. yes it uses more fuel then but your also getting more power. I hope this makes sense.
