I don't see it either. When someone stated it resembled the old 5 series from the side, I kind of saw it. The only resemblance I see are the fender flares.

I see it in the fender flares and the relatively squared off front end with a very short front overhang. Does it scream BMW? Nah, more or less it has the presence of one.

Important thing to remember is that the difference in scheduled maintenance costs for a 5 or 7 series BMW and a G8 (or any other Pontiac for that matter) is enough to fund a small country.

There are the dual projector like headlights and a twin semi-kidney grill.
The C-Pillar has a simliar dog-leg angle to it and there are 4-doors. =-)

I think it's a design done right, and I don't think there was a copy job done.

What I do believe is that good design elements are universal and what make a car a winning design is how it's executed and how it makes the owner feel.

Personally, my 330xi was fun, but hard to live with. maint. and repairs were costly...and it only came with a v6.
=-)

Now that Bangle has hurt BMWs designs.....the G8 makes a stunning case for solid design elements.

I don't see BMW in it. But, it speaks of BMW in the layout & overall driving dynamics.

Reading this got me thinking of the history of the Pontiac split grill. I can remember it back to about '63 or maybe earlier?? Yeah, no way is it a copy job. It is a Pontiac tradition that works only about 1/2 the time in design...IMHO.

It for sure works on the G8!!

I think the GTO looks more like a BMW then the G8....

I actually think that from the overall shape of the car it looks like a VW.

They look similar to a Audi A6.

I reckon Audi's look allot better than Bmw's anyway...

This is the RS6 a freakin absolute bullet of a car... A friend of a friend owns one... Nothing will touch it on the road...

Cars have and always will resemble one another.

My gf's first reaction was that it looks similar to a bimmer. Then again she is not a car enthusiast. Perhaps people with more casual interest in cars overlook key details and make a visual connection we aficionados lack?

Or maybe it's simply as eye-catching and eye-appealing as bimmers typically are?

never occurred to me to think of BMW when seeing the G8. i do now see a vague resemblance, but only very vaguely.

+1 on the front fenders. I wouldn't change them but they do seem very BMW like IMO

Bimmer M5/G8 GT

Pretty similar if you ask me, although I do like the angles on the G8 more. More aggressive.

When I first saw the G8, all I could see was Infinity M45 .. but with an attitude!!

There is a lot of yakking on about the "Hoffmeister kick" which is the hockey stick angle of the top of back window frame. This was pioneered by BMW and is a traight of all their vehicles. Personally, when I see one coming down the road (every day), I know exactly what it is. I never really got the comparison aside from the "kick".

I don't see what the kick is. Can you elaborate on what the back window is doing different than any other car?

I just got back from seeing the G8 in person! There was one at the Northwood University Auto show in Midland, Michigan. They had a grey/silver one there and I took a ton of pictures.

You have to see it in person, the car is like the size of a Dodge Charger minus the truck like front. And it really does resemble a 7 series or 5 series BMW, no doubt. Pictures do not do this car justice!

I'll post them soon, watching NFL now....

To jizz: that name is a little x rated ain't it?

As to the topic.... I actually like the 5 series better *ducks the lamp*.

The G8 photos we have here are of the concept car, go to Pontiac.com and you will notice that the lines of the production G8 are not half as nice. They freakin butchered the hood and grill for what I can see as no apparent reason. The ass on the G8 does not have the "Bangle Butt" which some see as a drawback on the BMW, but I've grown to like the BMW's rear areas. Got to give the G8 some credit for trying to be different though: when you cannot look better or even much better, you should at least be different.

As to the 7 series: in person, the 7 series measures longer from the front to the back than some large SUVs. I hope to god the G8 is not that big.

The pilot house on the BMW, btw, is much more upright than the G8. In terms of general shape, the G8 does do an overall ok job of mimicking the 550i.

I don't see anything different but wheels, ride height, and emblem.

Really? Maybe I'm just blind then: the hood and lines off the front end look totally different to me.
