: Questions for VMS
I have some questions about your tune for the G8GT:
1. I have read about sluggish downshifts. Does your ECM tune address any of the issues that could improve this or does it require a shop visit for TCM tuning also? What does a TCM tune get you that an ECM tune doesn't relative to tranny performance?
2. If you buy a programmed ECM with no mods then add CAI and / exhaust later, do you need additional tuning? If so, is it at full price each time? What would be the effect of adding these mods w/o additional tuning?
3. What if the dealer over-writes your tune? Is it a full charge to restore your tune?
4. The 93 tune seems to yield about 30 HP. What do you guess a 91 tune would add?
5. What would happen if you had to run 87 or 89 in an emergency with a 91 or 93 tune? Damage or just reduced performance?
Thanks,
Ed

1. The increase in power helps the felt lag between shifts quite a bit. We are working on a solution for this, hopefully we'll have it working in April if its possible. Otherwise the TCM is an in house only thing currently unless you dont mind buying a new TCM/Valvebody and putting it in. We'll be happy to program that!
2. Small updates like that are free :)
3. They cant overwrite it; bonus! :D
4. I'd say around 25 RWHP for the 91.
5. Nothing major, as long as you didnt beat on it you probably wouldnt even notice it. It would ping itself into the low octane table and run in that area for a few fill ups.
Thanks. That is great to know. It is going to be my first purhase after I get my GT on Monday.
I'm kind of gun shy after my GTP. I never had any trouble with mine but other seem to blow them out if they over-modded. Are these transmissions pretty robust?
Mike P 03-23-2008, 03:51 PM Great questions & great answers. Thanks for asking and thanks for answering!

Subscribing. . .I'd also like to hear the answer to this question. I know very little about automatic transmissions. TCM = Transmission Control Module??
yevot 03-23-2008, 09:10 PM Did someone say something about the combustion temperatures being higher? Is cooling going to be a bitch compared to the Fat Stock?
Torqued 03-30-2008, 09:24 PM VMS,
The mileage and power gains are impressive. Have you tested the tuning on any more cars to see if the results are consistent?
Thanks
JAWDRPNG8 03-30-2008, 10:48 PM The q@A are really good.. I am just waiting on the tranny fix..Is anyone aware of any california tune shops that could help on this??
Who gets 93 octane btw? Cali sucks we only have 91....unless u order in 5 gallon jugs like 103...for i think $8 bucks a gallon....( um no thanks for my DD) ..>>> ALso...man whats the deal with the limited CAI .?? Need a major manufactor like KandN to put sum RandD into this car....I guess the aftermarket is slow to get parts out there....I wanna get another 40 HP ..streetable out this thing...than maybe get a NOS kit for the weekend warrior stuff alil 150 shot or whatever...maybe get into the 12s for a Daily driver?

I am starting to see threads about how the GM is now able to see if you have reprogrammed your ECM. Something about storing the part number of the new program and if the number doesn't match then other parameters are checked to make sure the reprogramming is a GM program or not. There also might be a check on the number of flashes and if the counts do not match then GM knows that this is not the correct program for the car. If either of these occur then GM will void the engine/powertrain warranty.
Any truth in this? My G8/GT is my DD and I for one cannot afford to toss out my 5 year/100K warranty.
I have submitted a similar question on your website, but as of today no one has answered my question...

Well, I bought a G8 GT today so I'm anxiously awaiting to hear about your transmission solution! :)
Ausstar 04-01-2008, 10:36 AM yeah I would like vector guys to get back to me too.

Know you guys are busy but please call. I was one of the first to ask about the tuners nad want some talk time before buy!! Ive had an 888 for nearly 3 weeks now!
Rufas 04-01-2008, 01:59 PM No that thread is a complete fabrication. The information applies to a select line of diesel truck controllers not the car/regular truck line.
The other thread is also stating that this is also true for the new ECMs like the G8 has...
So who's right?

I talked to the Service Manager where we bought our G8/GT about this today. He basically admitted that there was nothing that would 'flag' an ECM that had been re-programmed. But he did say that if they looked into the parameters of the ECM and they did not match/fall into GM parameters then they would know it had been modified.
He also stated that if this was to happen then GM would void the entire powertrain warranty.
So do what you gotta do, but be prepared you just might loose your powertrain warranty.
G8 Ray 04-02-2008, 06:30 AM Is there some lawyer speak in the manual regarding modifications? I think I'll read my warranty manual now.

There is nothing at the dealership level that has the ability to see anything change on any modules as long as the CVN #'s match the factories which ours do. In the thousands of tunes we've done this has NEVER been an issue.

That entire post is false, nothing like this exists for gas cars nor is likely to ever exist. It definately DOES NOT exist in the G8 currently.
G8 Lover 04-02-2008, 08:09 AM FWIW, I know of a GP GXP has the VMS and has been in for warranty service on the trans. No issues to date.

Showing my ignorance here, but what is/are CVN #'s?
