: torque converter for daily driver
g8tofast 04-29-2009, 10:21 AM My mods are listed below, but I was wondering what converter rating would be best for my daily driver. I am going to take my car to the drag strip alot some I want to know what converter would give me the best results, but still keep it a good daily driver. thanks
Darkside 04-29-2009, 12:15 PM I'd go with a 3200. Not too high and still gives you the option to add H/C package to it down the road. Do some research on brands, some are looser than others.
g8tofast 04-29-2009, 12:27 PM New Era suggested a 2800.
stonebreaker 04-29-2009, 12:37 PM Find someone locally with a similar converter and drive their car around to see if you can deal with the way the converter feels. Doesn't have to be a G8, any car with a high stall lockup converter will behave about the same. Everyone panics about 'driveability'which means, instead of pressing the pedal a quarter inch to get moving, you have to press it half an inch. Horrors!
Your in-town gas mileage will drop 2-3 mpg.
Your highway mileage will not change, all modern trannies use a lockup torque converter. I think the driveability myth is a holdover from the non-lockup, non-overdrive days. Doesn't really apply to modern cars.
Everyone I know that freaked out about me going with a 3500 stall converter on my 96 impala, had never driven a car with a modern converter. Every one of them was pleasantly surprised at how well the car actually drives.
phoenixitc 04-29-2009, 12:46 PM Ohhh... you know this one's coming...
Um. does it void the tranny warranty ?

pretty sure it will unless you have a cool as dealership... (like mine :) )
majesticix 04-29-2009, 01:26 PM Mike at New Era has a 3200 in his. I am also interested in a TC. I've heard from a number of people to not go too low with your stall or you'll be disappointed down the stretch. I'd like to hitch a ride in Mike's car to see how it rides. He told me his wife liked it better with the TC which I thought was odd. Let us know what you decide.

Well my dad is the service manager so I guess I dont have to worry about that.
SteveXKR 04-29-2009, 06:53 PM 2800 Circle-D :)

Go all out...4400stall 3.27 gears :wink2:
maklar 05-02-2009, 09:55 AM I had a yank 3000 stall in my camaro with 2.73 gears and it was my daily driver. Other than the having to give it more pedal it wasn't too bad. It didn't roll much more than a manual on hill stops and I probably could have went with a 3500 and been ok for me.
stonebreaker 05-02-2009, 09:59 AM I've had a Yank 3500 in my impala for 10 years and I love it. I documented 8 tenths improvement in ET with just the converter swap, and that was over several runs, accounting for differences in DA. Since I wrecked the imp, the drivetrain is going into a 92 s-10. I'll probably have the converter re-stalled to 4000 since this will be mostly a play-toy.
blushirt35 05-05-2009, 06:33 AM My 04 Gto had a EDGE 3000 stall, tranny rebuilt with converter , the car the tranny is in now is a daily driver and running low 12s witrh no issues at all. EDGE converters for the win, oh yes , they are way cheaper also in price but not quality, do a search on the internet, you wont be disappointed.
edmanet 05-05-2009, 06:30 PM LIVERNOIS installed the cooler when they put the converter in the car.
I'll see if I can get better photos tomorrow. Its raining and I don't have much room in the garage.

Cooler mounted on driver side in lower cowl.
{I'll see how hard it is to take off the grill to get a better photo.}

locrzng888 05-05-2009, 10:05 PM Honestly 2400-2800 is all you need. The higher the stall the more heat your gonna build in the tranny. You will definetly drop in MPG the higher stall you go with. These cars have about 1600 or so stall now, if you can leave at 600-800 rpm's higher then stock its gonna really improve you 60ft times, you also may need a better tire for the launch Just be realistic, some who say 3600 or even 3200 probably wouldn't put that in their own car or maybe they would. Remember just because it says 2400 or 2800 stall, it will probably stall at a higher rpm just because of the weight of our cars. You have to move the mass of weight, if your gonna invest have someone build you one that takes into consideration the weight, gearing, cam, etc. I ran 6000 stall in my Nova, it also had at least 650 hp as it ran 9.70's at 136. I didn't just buy an off the shelf converter, I had coan converters build it to work with my combination. There are a lot of variables that go into building a converter. Don't buy to much stall and then hate it after you get it. I've also had a couple prostreet cars with stroker motors, I tried to run to much stall in one and ended up getting a little too much heat in the tranny. Its expensive for a turbo 350 or 400, 6l80e is gonna be a lot more if you hurt it.
PassTime 05-06-2009, 12:24 AM If you want to do it right you need to do the converter around your mods not the other way around
locrzng888 05-06-2009, 06:07 AM Passtime has it right.
toehead93 05-06-2009, 02:28 PM Think ahead of your future mods and be aware that if you go with a BIG converter you will need new gears or you'll be up-shifting into the low end of the power band.
c5racr1 05-24-2009, 05:07 PM i got a 2800 fti its about as much as i would want in a dd
Dave Ga 05-24-2009, 07:27 PM I am unsure what a TC is like by itself but, i got a 2800 with a cam and maggie and it is great. i don't think I would want more stall with the other power adders as traction is hard to come by but, if it is all you are doing maybe as high as 3200 would be OK. I love my 2800 though:gears:
1bad03snake 05-26-2009, 10:38 PM I have a circle d 3200 and I'm pulling out this week. It won't lock up.
Its was all a tuning issue the converter is great
Chipless 05-27-2009, 07:54 AM I've run two different FTI converters in my G8, and I drive it daily. These converters make the car MUCH more fun to drive, and they retain lockup, so you don't lose any highway fuel economy. We now have four different stall speed recommendations available, and can help select the best one for your mods. :)
