: Owners: Try this
drob8 03-24-2008, 06:23 PM So, I'm curious about the A6 and stumbled across something.
Put your car in Sport Mode
Get to 40MPH and make sure it gets to S6
Hammer it
Does it shoot down to S2 and throw you into the back of your seat?
That's been my experience and is what I'd like ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!! Unfortunately, if you get too fast, it seems like the car is trying to figure out which gear it needs to drop into and lags. ARGH!
So...if you can give that a shot...let me know if you have the same experience.
Mike
Red888 03-24-2008, 10:48 PM I finally got past the break-in. Took it out and got it up to 120mph on the flat, and it just sat down and knifed like a bullet. 1st start from a dead start after, I actually got a full "Bark" hitting 2nd. Talk about getting thrown back! Unbelievable. Can't wait to do it again.
Rue_G8GT 03-25-2008, 12:59 PM Man this sounds like fun!
Zaphod B 04-01-2008, 11:07 AM I am at 325 miles and impatient. :eek2: :eek2:
FL_G8 04-01-2008, 11:46 AM I feel your pain. I'm at 100 miles..
mike c 04-01-2008, 07:55 PM Still "0" here waiting for the car to get to the dealer...You think you are impatient.:yumyum:
Ausstar 04-02-2008, 12:04 PM so waht did you guys do....? 1000miles before hammering it???
hitman488 04-02-2008, 12:09 PM I've had my car for 2 weeks now, I'm 480 miles and counting. I got kinda of hard headed one night on I-480 after crossing the Valleyview Bridge and couldn't resist, got it up to 100 mph for a few seconds and backed off of it. Real sweet sound.for the speed the RPM's were only around 2,000 or so. I'll be good until I hit the magical 500 mile mark.
locrzng888 04-05-2008, 06:23 AM Hammer down with 19 miles, salesman in the car. Hammer down, let er eat.

drob8 04-05-2008, 08:43 AM I think the manual say to wait until 500 miles before getting on it. I couldn't hold out and hit it at about 350 miles.
GT-610 04-06-2008, 08:46 AM been there did that,neck snapped,very happy!!!
BruceJames 04-11-2008, 01:50 AM Grrrrrr only at 137 miles.. CAN'T WAIT!

Foster'sguy 04-23-2008, 04:34 AM Done deal Doc!
Ryan M 04-24-2008, 10:03 PM Some of you guys need to drive your G8 more, I still haven't seen one on the road here!
If you want to let me break it in for you, I can put your 500 miles on in just one week during my daily commute, plus the extra fun driving im sure I could get 500 miles in just a few days :D
93612 GT 05-03-2008, 10:41 AM yeah i feel that same power when you get on it at low speeds on sport mod
ls2 goatherder 05-06-2008, 09:27 PM Hey Guys ,new G8 Owner Here, just Traded In My Pristine 2006 Gto For It.
Lovin It! If Your Really Anal About The Break In, I Believe The Manual Says 600
Mile Break In Period. But Personally Nothin Wrong With Giving It A Little Go
Pedal Every Once In A While Before Then.

My G8's been in the dealership for the past 2 days. Recalls and a rear bumper fix.

Two weeks, 768 miles so far.
haddadmotorsports 05-07-2008, 10:42 PM 1500 miles on mine
I started beating up on it around 30miles.
I put break in oil in it (Cheap Oil) put it on the dyno broke it in hard.
Car is running like a champ.
I've noticed that the car is much more adaptive to my driving style in sport mode.
Please understand that the transmission in these cars does not have the capability to skip gears. when it down shifts it actually has to go 6-5-4-3 etc.
I have driven the car in the canyons twice and I swear after a couple of corners the upshifts and downshifts are pretty daymn crisp.
Thanks
Mike Haddad
GTXgp 05-07-2008, 11:45 PM 5 days, 200mi, and hit the dyno today. Will be back at the dyno again a few more times over the next couple of days... break-in what? :shiner:
I don't necessarily do a "break-in" but I will be changing the oil at 500 & 1500 with dino oil and switch to mobil 1 full synth at 3,000.
Oh, and back to the OP... yes, the sport mode does a very nice job of skip shifts. :driving:

drob8 05-07-2008, 11:50 PM Off topic...what did you pull? :)
My G8's been in the dealership for the past 2 days. Recalls and a rear bumper fix.
they are NOT recalls, they are campaigns. BIG difference.
GTXgp 05-08-2008, 11:10 AM Off topic...what did you pull? :)
I was going to make a post with the full results when we're done, but stock baseline was 307whp on a Dynojet.
_G8GT_ 05-08-2008, 11:22 AM they are NOT recalls, they are campaigns. BIG difference.
 My fault :slap:
Its been there for 3 days now...They say there website is down?
liquidred1 05-12-2008, 08:09 PM ?, i have about 750mi on mine, should i get an oil change already?

Wow, I did this yesterday BY ACCIDENT and it threw me back in the seat like I was yet to feel from this car!! Extremely impressive. I was actually going between 45 and 50 mph, but it felt like it instantly downshifted into 2nd and took off like a rocket.
Batman 05-13-2008, 12:32 AM oh man...OP I can't wait to try that out...just got my g8 tonight...too early to try that with 37 miles on it?
Yeahhhhh probably....well damn.
drglock 05-23-2008, 11:33 PM Hammer down!! :gears:
Break in Shmake in.(*) I asked the Manager as he handed me the keys what I should do to break in the engine....he said "Just do, forget the donts, drive it like it was meant to be driven"
Not wanting to insult him, I happily peeled out of his lot :)
I passed 1000 miles today and I am probably going to have to buy some new rear tires soon. People around my neighborhood have been asking about all these new 60 foot patches of rubber all around. They never suspect nice ole me in my "quiet new family sedan" mwahahaha (**)
* I can neither confirm nor deny the effects of treating your new engine like a jockey does a racehorse in the final stretch
** I can confirm the "excitement" that Pontiac has built by my personal exhilaration attained through driving this wicked beast of a musclecar.
Red-Rocket 05-24-2008, 10:17 AM Break it in like you are gonna drive it! Hard and fast guys!!!
Yep. :driving::driving::driving::judge:
DragoonRaven 05-25-2008, 11:54 PM Took ours to the drags at about 650 miles.
If it breaks, who cares? It's under warranty, right?!

When its at the car dealership for 2 months, you will care then. :)
carsuperfreak 05-27-2008, 02:40 PM When its at the car dealership for 2 months, you will care then. :)
Or when it breaks just outside of warranty because of beating the crap out of it while new :nonono:
4gasem 05-27-2008, 04:46 PM ?, i have about 750mi on mine, should i get an oil change already?
whats dino oil?
Just plain old rock oil! Out of the ground made with dinosaurs... :)
Non synthetic.
It's the best oil to break an engine in with.
I plan to change mine right away. I do a lot of half throttle accelerations and then immediately down shift to break the rings in both ways. www.mototuneusa.com is the bomb and I've used it on my last two bikes and my last car. :)
Panther 2 07-20-2008, 02:59 PM Drive it like you stole it! Thats why you have a warranty, if it's going to break ,you might want that to happen sooner rather than later. I had 1000 mi. removed the engine cover , went to Atco raceway and ran 13.65@104mph . Left with a Great big grin!
^ It was the extra 2 to 3 hp from removing the engine cover and the 10 degree cooler engine.
LasT_ResorT_G8 07-20-2008, 09:22 PM lol and a downhill track :)
Got 8? 07-21-2008, 02:10 AM At 9 days and 1200 miles I did it while talking to my bro on the phone coming home tonight and I go "Oh **** !!!" he says "what was that??? I heard it..." I was like "it just threw me back in the seat!!! and when I got out of it after about 2 secs.I was at 75, I started at about 45!!!" :driving: He started laughing...LOL
00 Trans Ram 07-24-2008, 10:39 AM FYI - the "engine break-in procedure" stuff is more myth than anything. Especially with the production methods used today, and with the tolerances that our motors are manufactured with, the old "take it easy for 500 miles" just doesn't need to be done. It certainly won't HURT, but then again, it's probably better for your car if you NEVER push it hard.
Here's the recommended "break-in" from a Mechanical Engineer (he builds race and street engines, including an LS6 that he stuffed into an RX-7, several LS1s, and numerous turbo 4 and 6 cylinders):
From a mechanical engineer’s standpoint:
- Anything mechanically wrong is going to go wrong in the beginning – quickly.
- Fill with fluids, crank and run at 2000-3000 rpms until it warms up.
- Let idle and check for fluid leaks
- Run at varying speeds (up to 3000) for 30 mins.
- Change oil and filter
- Crank car again, take on long road and start at 2000 rpms and make pulls from 2-3k 10 times or so loading the motor more and more – this expands the rings and makes them seat under pressure, but not high rpms.
- Do this for 50 miles
- Change oil
- Beat the heck out of it.
Keep in mind, this is the procedure for a NEW motor, not a motor in a NEW CAR. Big difference. Our motors are started at the engine manufacturing plant and run before being boxed up and shipped to the final assembly plant. Then, once they're in the car, they are started again to make sure all the systems work right. Finally, they're driven on/off boats and trucks for 20 miles until you buy it.
That takes care of all but the fluid changes (I doubt that the factory drains the engine, but I don't know for sure) and the 50 mile drive. So, all that's left for us to do, is to drive it and swap the fluids (oil, rear diff, tranny, coolant).

Was that you I saw on YouTube? If not, there is a black GT doing the 1/4 mile at Atco and I recall them mentioning that it was brand new.

Okay, I just did it twice from S6 at 40mph. No problem, it jumped down to S2 and took off.
