: PYPES or PM-FL

Thanks to everyones inputs, I have narrowed down my decision to either the Pypes axleback or the PM-FL. This is primarily due to expense. Ideally I would get the Corsa or Borla, but that just isn't feasible right now.

My primary goal is to have my car sound like a V-8. I like the axle back arrangement because I can switch back to stock for road trips. Maybe someday I'll go with a whole system, but that will come later with an intake and a tune.

Does anyone have experience with these and maybe be able to provide me with some pros and cons that I should consider?

I would think the PM-FL axleback's might be a tad bit louder than the Pypes because they are just straight pypes. There also might be more drone with those too.

I agree that the straight pipes might be too loud, so this morning I went ahead and ordered the Pypes axel-back. I kept watching the videos and thought that the drone was awful loud in the PM-FL video. At $300, its really not that risky of an investment, so I figured what the heck.

Congrats, let us know how they sound especially the drone when you get them.

Love my Pypes! Just right for the sound and great price!

I also got the pypes. Sounds musch better than the stock 50 gallon drums. There is some drone about 1800-200 rpm. I just go faster thru it. I originally purchased the Kooks axle back but cancelled to get the pypes at half the price. Highway speeds are no issue
what-so-ever. Maybe next year I'll replace the rest of the hardware to the cats.

Bump

SO any other input on how the drone is?

I have the PM-FL axle backs and they sound awesome. The drone is pretty loud but only at around 1800-2000 rpm. The sound outside when under load is really good, I'm absolutely satisfied. When I go on long trips I will be putting the stockers back on.

I have the Pypes as well. I hated the drone at first, then I just spent $65 on a gallon of eDead soundproofing. I painted that under the carpet in the trunk, and under the back seat. It's damn near silent now, almost too quiet.

They give a deep, hollow monotone humm though. I'd highly recommend an X or H pipe to give the exhaust note a little character.

Well, as I said, I ordered the Pypes. I placed the order through LMPerformance on Saturday, May 9th. Price paid was $276.96 plus $16.62 Florida tax (total $293.57). I believe they shipped directly from the manufactuer in Hatfield, Pa (a former home town of mine). I received the order on Thursday, May 14th. Also got a free hat (pretty cool) that I wasn't expecting as a bonus. The package was very complete with good instructions (not that I really needed them). Here is the Pypes compared to stock:

I installed them today. It only took a 15mm socket and about 5 minutes each side. There is a slight problem, however. The tips were not welded on straight. The left muffer is especially bad. I can probably adjust some out, but I will likely need to visit a muffler shop to re-weld them properly. See Pictures:

I am a bit concerned about the fit because I want the tips to look straight. Once I figure it out, I will post an update. I will also post videos sometime soon.

Anyway, the best thing about these are the sound. They provide a very deep tone that is actually quieter than I expected. They sound great just cruising around and at WOT. If you want to make a lot of noise, these mufflers ARE NOT for you. If you want a great, deep, V8 tone from your G8, these fit the bill perfectly.

Yes, there is drone. Like all the other mufflers that I have read about, they have drone around 2000 rpm under a load. Quite frankly, I like it! This is, afterall a big V8 and I want to hear it! I had a 78 Cutlass with a 350 and flowmasters and a 1996 Dodge Dakota V8 with flowmasters that had much more drone. After driving a 2005 Vibe for the past four years, I welcome the drone of a V8 once again!

Overall, I am pleased by the sound and the price. The alignment of the tips has got to be fixed because it makes the mufflers look like a cheap, shoddy install. Once I can figure out how to make them look straight I will be 100% satisfied. I am open to suggetions here. Here is one last picture to get an idea of what I'm talking about:

Mine are slightly off, but not that bad. I've yet to adjust mine though.

Those mufflers are unacceptable !!! Get ahold of the people you purchased these from, show them the pics and ask for replacements or your money back !!! These are bolt on products and there's no way in hell you should have to pay to get the tips re-welded so they fit right.

i agree with silverfox....if it was me id get my money back ...those tips look wise look horrible on a G8 IMO and with the problems you had id tell em you will ship and back and want your money back or ship em back and put some nice tips on there and have a tech thats not smoking something weld em the right way...goodluck hows the sound of em?

I have also had alignment issues with mine. :(

I swear the left one is welded on at a different angle than the right. I even put a floor jack under the muffler trying to get it aligned. I even had a muffler shop cut the pipe forward of the rear pumpkin. No luck.

I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

I had a similar problem only my left one goes to the outside of the car a bit more than the right. Not real bad, but it's noticable. I can fix mine pretty eash I'm guessing, just haven't got around to it. You should send your's back and get new ones. That should not be acceptable, and pypes should be aware of their fitment problems.

Don't waste your time telling the folks at pypes about it....I went there had them look at mine and they claimed it was my exhaust that was off. For 300.00 you really can't complain too much....They sound great under WOT but forget trying to adjust them. I am just going to pick up a Corsa in the future and live with the Pypes for now.

Don't ya just love the customer service. Well, If I ever buy another system it won't be pypes. They sound allright for the price. I guess I should have know I was giving up something to get the low price.

Definitely send those back. $300 or $30, you shouldnt have to do anything for a "bolt on" to be straight. Good luck!

Why can't anyone offer an axel back like this with the quad tips that look like stock?
