: Kooks Shorties and stock cat back
Benobe 05-26-2009, 03:46 PM Anyone running Kooks shorties and stock catback system?
I am looking for a little more V8 sound (start-up, idle, and WOT) without being too loud or spending too much money. If this sounds good I will probably add a CIA and that will probably be the extent of my mods.
Please let me know what you think and if you have any sound clips.
Thanks

09 GT 05-26-2009, 04:26 PM Are talking about the Kooks mid-length headers with high flow cats ? if so I would also be interested in that combo....
Benobe 05-26-2009, 04:41 PM Yes the Kooks mid-length and high flow cats
2quik4u 05-26-2009, 06:14 PM I have the kooks midlength headers with the Magnaflow street series catback and it is only slightly louder than stock. It has a nice sound at start-up and a light rumble. I had the catback before the headers and adding the headers did not make it much louder.

how about power gains, anything noticable when you bolted them on?
GTPprix 05-26-2009, 07:30 PM I just got my Kooks Mids/Cats on yesterday and they sound just a hair louder than stock so it should be PERFECT for those of you looking for the sleeper sound with a good choice in cat backs :)

GTPprix - How is the start up and idle, can you tell it is running and that it has a V8?
09 GT 05-26-2009, 09:59 PM How difficult was the install ? I'm looking to install the same system in the near future with mid muffler and resonator delete with x-pipe. I just want a deeper sound nothing too loud with a boost in performance. Thanks in advance for any info
2quik4u 05-26-2009, 10:47 PM I could tell a noticeable increase in power but I havent gotten it to the dyno yet so I dont have any numbers. I hope to go and dyno it in the next few weeks but I might wait another month or so until I get a cam. The install was extremely easy and took me less than 2 hours using a lift.
09 GT 05-27-2009, 09:19 AM Thanks for the info. I hope to install mine by the end of summer.
socalg8gt 05-27-2009, 10:27 AM i get mine on monday, im installing them in my driveway :) and getting it dyno tuned a few days after
09 GT 05-27-2009, 01:59 PM Sweet...would love to hear it. Mine is still bone stock. Planning on CAI, Cortex, exhaust mods (X-pipe install) in the very near future. I see you are socal..did you go on the Haddad run in April?

no i didnt go i had to work, i have the stock exhaust modded i put an x-pipe , and i took of the stock mufflers and put flowmasters , i see u r planning something like that too

so u still have the stock exhaust with the resonators? can u get a sound clip?
socalg8gt 05-27-2009, 11:33 PM so u still have the stock exhaust with the resonators? can u get a sound clip?
i took off the big one in the center , but it still has the two that r by the back, ill try to take sound clips in the morning
GTPprix 05-28-2009, 06:17 AM so u still have the stock exhaust with the resonators? can u get a sound clip?
Yes I do, not really sure if you need a sound clip it sounds damn near stock the camera wont pick that up ;)
09 GT 05-28-2009, 09:17 AM Looks like my system will be the same as yours once I get started. I wonder how it will do come smog time or what the dealers with think ? Do the Kooks mid lengths have a CARB #...Just wondering.....
Torqued 05-28-2009, 12:12 PM How do these stack up against the SLP setup? Each will bolt up the the stock and after market exhausts. The cost is definately in favor of the Kooks setup, but I don't know how the power or quality compares. Has anyone looked at opening up the outlet on the SLP cats? Is that worth the trouble?
GTPprix 05-28-2009, 12:58 PM Quality wise IMHO Kooks kills SLP but again only an opinion :)
jkayner 05-28-2009, 02:40 PM Yes I do, not really sure if you need a sound clip it sounds damn near stock the camera wont pick that up ;)
I ask because i have eliminated the centermuffler/resonators and am wondering if the shorty headers will add just a small amount of sound. I do not want to go with aftermarket mufflers, but just a bit more sound.
I am also considering the JBA shorties. They are only like $400.
alex94z 05-28-2009, 04:07 PM Does anyone know if a tune is needed for this setup in order to avoid throwing codes? If so, would a superchips cortex tune work?
socalg8gt 06-01-2009, 05:07 PM well guys i got my kooks mids today ill take some pics later tonight when i get home i wont install them till wed. i hope at the honda dealer i work at they will let me go on my day to install them if not im going to have to install them in my driveway :(
jkayner 06-02-2009, 09:40 AM let me know how the spark plug access it. what kind of bolts are you going to use, locking ones?
chaysLS2 06-02-2009, 09:57 AM Any one got some long tubes for sale for the GT? I would like to buy some if anyone has them.

I have the JBA shorties on mine and wish i would have went with long tubes. They are cheap but i didnt see but 10-15 hp gain.
Benobe 06-02-2009, 12:33 PM The Kooks shorties are close to a long tube, unlike the JBA shorties which are true shorties.
ScreaminRedZ 06-02-2009, 01:46 PM I was actually curious how a set of LT's, high flow cat, and a midpipe would sound/perform with the stock axleback exhaust. I really want it to sound better, but I love the look of the stock tips.

That seems to be one of the best ways to go. From what I have read it give you great performance without the Drone. But I have not yet done it.

yea i think the kooks mids r almost as long as the slp long tube headers
jkayner 06-02-2009, 06:41 PM I have the JBA shorties on mine and wish i would have went with long tubes. They are cheap but i didnt see but 10-15 hp gain.
other than the headers, what exhaust work do you have done? how much different did it sound? For $400 10-15, plus a bit of sound would be fine for me. paying 3-4x that for 30-40 isn't worth it to me...
johnh 06-03-2009, 11:03 AM I wonder what the gains would be from Kooks Mids/Corsa vs. LT/stock muffs?
I would say LT good for around 35-40 rwhp
Kooks say 20-25 rwp for just Headers, Corsa's gotta be good for 8-12 considering it replaces the stock mid pipes/muffs which have to be a restriction given how quiet they are. That would make Kooks/mids < 10 hp difference.
I've heard the Mids/Corsa on a car with Livernois Stage I and it sounded fantastic.
2quik4u 06-03-2009, 11:51 AM The differance between the mids and LT headers on a cammed car is around 10rwhp. On a bolt-on car it is even less.
