moondog 05-26-2009, 09:29 PM Its time to put axle backs on my gt g8
I know this has been talked about alot but need some fed back here is what i found
pypes $275
magnaflow $523
kooks $595
loudmouth $359
powerflow $581
any feed back or other options
I am 45 and just looking for a little v-8 sound but not to loud
Thanks
Eric_GT 05-27-2009, 07:40 AM I have heard through the grapevine that the pypes can be a bit too loud for some people.
I can only tell you from my experiences that the Magnaflows are a very nice, deep, mellow sound. They are definitely louder at first but mellow after some miles. If you are looking for that deep throaty sound, MF fits the bill.
Silver G8 GT 05-27-2009, 08:04 AM PowerFlo's (from what I've heard) are quieter than the MFs and have a low rumble to them. But I've also heard the have some drone. Again this is NOT from 1st hand.
Cloudwraith 05-27-2009, 08:20 AM We just installed a set of Magnaflow Axle-Backs for a customer a couple days ago. I got some video of it I'll post here shortly. Good V8 sound that wasn't too obnoxious.
phoenixitc 05-27-2009, 08:30 AM If appearance is a consideration, aren't the Kooks different with respect to a single oval outlet versus duals. Some folks stated not liking the looks of the Kooks. I like the dual-tip outlets over single Kooks. Just my 2c's.
wag42 05-27-2009, 08:31 AM FYI-if you create an account w/Maryland Speed, you can get the Magnaflow axleback for $420 delivered. Pretty good deal...

Would like to see that video...
RealRedRocket 05-27-2009, 03:24 PM Only 45? what a baby. Get the loudest you can find. Only kidding....
I wish I was 45...I've got the pypes. Not to loud, some drone, not enought for me to get rid of them. You can see the prices, almost half the others.
I noticed how nice they really sound when I was at the dealers and they started my car to take inside. I was pleasantly surprised. :)
Brick'S hithouse 05-27-2009, 06:18 PM I just put the Magnaflow #16883 axle backs on my GT on Fri and took them off on Mon. Wife blew a gasket, too loud for her (I loved 'em). So if you want an almost brand new set of Magnaflows I'll sell ya a set $380 delivered.
My vote is for Magnaflow 16883 axle back.
Just the right sound for a daily driver.

audie03 06-07-2009, 12:32 PM where did you find the pypes for 275
SilverFox 06-07-2009, 03:37 PM just installed the mf axlebacks and so far I love them.
sixfoot9g8gt 06-07-2009, 09:27 PM i'm thinking about getting the powerflo's this week, so that would be my suggestion. their custom tips are my favorite around
RealRedRocket 06-08-2009, 08:42 AM where did you find the pypes for 275
I paid $276.96 to be exact from LMPerformance. Great customer service to boot.:)
appletonrc 06-08-2009, 07:30 PM My magnaflows showed up on my porch today. After the kids are in bed I'm sneaking out to the garage :)

Nice, let us know how they are.
appletonrc 06-08-2009, 09:41 PM Just took a drive. At first, very nice. It's like the car hit puberty. Very low rumble at start. Around town, very nice. First trip on the highway was OK, I was still feeling it out. The "drone" seems almost more of a harmonic when the AFM is kicked in. I had a friend in HS that had a '70 Chevelle and it had serious drone. It was hard to talk over it. This isn't nearly that bad. More of an annoyance.
If the car was a 2, it's now a 7. I was hoping for more of a 5-6. Someone said give it a few weeks, they mellow out. I'll do that. Also, the sound really sounds like it comes straight from the trunk. I'm thinking the dynamat is a must have.
Like I said, I love the start up and town driving. Hwy is an issue. We'll see how it goes for the next week or so.
Easy enough to install. I think I was done in 15 minutes.
crazygreek89 06-08-2009, 10:04 PM You can get any exhaust system you want, as long as it's a Borla!
JEC_G8GT 06-09-2009, 08:10 AM I have Pypes and at first I thought they were too loud....since then I've gotten used to them and they seem just right.

Here's something for everyone to consider: http://www.g8board.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17353
These are with flowmaster mufflers, but it looks like they really found a way to cut back on the drone. They said they eliminated it with the 50 series flowmasters. I'm wondering if the double x-crossover would eliminate most of the drone with other mufflers...... these guys could be on to something here.
Aultman 06-13-2009, 06:56 PM Here is a clip of my Magnaflow 16883 ax-backs.

shane 06-14-2009, 06:40 PM im kinda in the same boat after i have my midsection all done, im looking for some kinda muffs
appletonrc 06-14-2009, 10:24 PM After a week or so with the Mangaflows on, I'm still in love with the in town sound.
Drone on they highway is annoying, but I can live with it. If it gets too old, drop it in 5th and its completely gone. Sure the MPG will take a hit.
I was going to try the "bolt on a chunk of steel" trick. It will change where the drone occurs. Dynomat (or equiv) is also supposed to help. The x pipe is interesting. If someone tries it, let us know.

What do you mean "bolt on a piece of steel"?
I would think that the double x-over would change the harmonics. What about those glass-pack things?? We don't have to eliminate the drone, we just have to shift it out of the "cruising zone". I don't mind the drone on acceleration, in fact, I kind of like it. Just on the highway (1700-2000 RPM) sometimes it gets old.
sixfoot9g8gt 06-15-2009, 09:49 AM i just put on my SLP Powerflo's and the sound is incredible. not real loud, just loud enough for everyone to know it's a V8. nice rumble at idle.
stock axleback weighs 40lbs
SLP Powerflo axleback 29lbs
johnh 06-15-2009, 09:57 AM I have the pypes and they are too loud on the highway when cruising.
Its especially apparent when the AFM comes on and off, as the pitch changes considerably. Around town (under 55 mph) they are great sounding, its really the highway cruise and AFM that make unwanted noise. Even with AFM not cycling, they are noisest (as most are) in the dreaded 1800-2100 rpm range.
KCG8GT 06-15-2009, 12:30 PM I just ordered the Magnaflows last night. I've already completed the resonator delete/x-pipe mod, and my hope is this will prevent or greatly reduce drone. I tried the washer mod before and after adding the x-pipe and drone was significantly reduced after.
The thing that really attracted me to the axle-back setup vs. a cat-back is the ability to quickly return to stock. Twenty minutes in the garage will restore the quiet if we take a long trip.
I've watched the for sale section quite awhile now and don't often see the MFs come across. I'm taking that as the best recommendation I can get.
shane 06-15-2009, 05:59 PM let me know i just did my xpipe and mid crap delete and been looking into the magnaflow axle back
Orange Crush 06-15-2009, 06:04 PM Funny....unless I missed it ,read whole thread and nobody mentioned Corsa cat backs.....I heard theyve got a mellow rumble.....any thoughts?

thread is stated AXLE backs
appletonrc 06-15-2009, 07:53 PM The chunk of steel - you bolt it on to the exhaust, playing around with the placement. It in theory moves the resonance to a different RPM.
This is on a GTO:

I would think there are more efficient means of going about this, but hey if it works, then it works!
If I had the money, I would play around with placement of the x pipe and the number of crossovers and maybe a single resonator. I'm sure this would greatly reduce the amount of drone if you had things in the correct spot.
I think some people are hyper sensitive about "drone" though. I don't care if there is a little bit of resonance, as long as the radio at like 15 or higher will cover it up, that's totally fine with me.

Please keep us updated on your MF axle backs. The MFs by themselves on a stock system is just not loud enough for me, but after listening to Boomers MF axle backs with the x-pipe, I think that's the sound I'm looking for. His corsa DB blacks sound even meaner though!
I running washers right now, 2 on top and bottom and the drone doesn't really bug me that much anymore. I would love to know how the drone is with the MFs and an x-pipe compared to a stock exhaust with washers. I hope you bring back good news! :judge:
rcpepper 06-17-2009, 06:26 PM Trying to decide myself what I want. When you drive a long tube dual exhaust 350 chevy in a truck with 40 series flowmasters, the car doesn't make any noise at idle. I crank up my car and can't hear it. I don't mind droning, that's what the radio is for, as long as I don't have to scream to talk over the exhaust system. I had an H-pipe with magnaflows on my 04 GTO, and got it loud enough. My truck is again too quiet, should have used super 40's instead of delta 40's. I am in my mid 30's and refuse to grow up.

KCG8GT 06-17-2009, 09:00 PM OK - Installed the MF axle-backs this afternoon. Here's some background information. Bought the car the last week of February. Tried the washer mod in April. If I added enough washers to get any sound, the drone was horrible.
First week in May, we went down to southeast Kansas where we know a guy who does incredible exhaust work. He removed the single resonator and the double bullet resonators. He spent probably an hour-and-a-half fabricating the most beautiful x-pipe I've ever seen. There was about 6 inches of shared opening between the two pipes. He actually incorporated the x-pipe in the straight pipe used to replace the resonators. 5 welds total. Two at the front, two at the rear, and one around the circumfrunce of the x-pipe unionwas. Work of art.
The result from that was a slight increase in rumble. BUT, when I got home, I tried the washer mod again, and this time, NO DRONE! It was my hope that a good set of axle-backs would kick up the sound, and the mid pipe mods would help with drone.
I've been leaning on the budget administrator and this past weekend, she gave me the go ahead. I've heard/read the MFs had the deepest sound, and that is what I wanted. Ordered them Sunday from Maryland Speed, and got them today. 20 minutes and they were in place.
Here are initial thoughts. Startup sound is beautiful. Very deep. Absolutely no doubt about what you're hearing! Kick up the revs in the driveway and it sounds great. A few pops when coming back down, but I like that.
Took it out on the highway a few minutes ago. There is a fair amount of drone or resonance between 60-70. I didn't take it up over 75, but the drone was dropping out by that speed. This isn't all the time. Only when pulling a slight hill that isn't steep enough to kick it down a gear.
I'm really not sure drone is the correct term for what we're hearing. It is more like resonance. Kind of just sets the interior pieces to vibrating. All this sound is coming from the trunk. Saturday I'm going to buy some dynomat and give the trunk a good going over. I think that may resolve most of the overtones. Also, I've read these mufflers tend to mellow a little over the first couple of weeks. I'm guessing the combination of these two will make this liveable. I really hope so because the sound is wonderful. Had a friend do a fly-by tonight and it sounds very stout without being obnoxious.
A couple of more thoughts. Maryland speed is amazing. Best price I could find, and very fast turn around. The quality on the MFs looks to be very good. The tips don't begin to reach out as far as the OEM tips. They look good, but just don't reach far enough back. I guess this may be a matter of taste as well, but keeping them clean is going to be an exercise in patience.
One last impression, and this is hard to quantify. I didn't run the changes through the dynolicious because our air is horrible tonight, but I believe I can really feel an increase in part throttle torque. I actually barked my tires tonight during a 3/4 throttle first to second shift. Have never been able to do that. At this point I don't have a CAI or tune, so barking was unexpected!
I'll post again after sound deadner in the trunk. Sorry for my wordiness...
sixfoot9g8gt 06-17-2009, 09:32 PM are those tips connected to the mufflers? if not you can slide them back a little to expose more of the tips. i have the SLP, but that's what i did so i can see the tips more
appletonrc 06-17-2009, 10:06 PM I think the MF tips are welded on.
I'd be interested in the dynomat install. I too love the sound everywhere but that dreaded 65-70 area. It really does sound like its coming straight from the trunk. I read someone else with drone said it dropped by 50% with dynomat. I think that would be an acceptable level.

Thanks for the update man! Do you have any pics of your x-pipe? Sound clips?????
I love the sound of the magnaflows. I think this is definitely my next mod, along with the x-pipe
