I got a call from my local Pontiac Dealer In Brooklyn NY today they just got the first G8 V6 today.I went to the dealer and it was the first red one of 888 cars.the salesman got in the car with me the car started but all the electrical gages and DIC, climate control and the radio was off we could not figure out how to tern it everything back on so I just said let me drive it like that .I pulled out and got on to a three lane road the car shifted fine very south but it had excessive engine noise. so I gave it more gas and the noise was so loud sounded like the engine was in the cabin of the car and not outside my father sat in the back seat and he even said the engine is too loud.. Basically the car was not responsive at all you hear is the engine noise and no pickup, so I made a U-tern and drove it back to the dealership. I wanted to trade in my 05 Grand Prix for the G8 but my GP drives much better then the g8 did. I don’t know maybe there was some problem with the car that I drove but I was very disappointed with this one. I walked in to the dealership and the guys asked me how is it I said I did not like this car at all, they said wait until we get a GT then u can drive it and see if you like it.

Yep,

Aussies have said the exact same thing about the V6.

Not sure if they are going to make it quieter...

wait for a gt,it is twice as quiet as my gtp was.In fact,I would say my gtp was louder at idle than my gt is now at wot!!!(SLP exaust)

you gotta wait until they do all that electrical stuff... i went in to test drive the g8 and gt, but they werent ready, cause they didnt have any of those gauges working...i went back in a few days later and drove both cars, and they both sound really well and drives smooth.

Sounds like your dealer didn't do the proper pre-delivery stuff. My guess is the guages and stuff are disconnected for travel, possibly to limit mileage or to save the battery or something. I know the GTOs had a security key that had to be entered to use the radio, not sure about the guages.

As for the noise, that's not good news, but you did kind of start off on the wrong foot.

As for the gauges not working, it sounds like someone has messed around with the 'night panel mode' for the instruments.

On page 5-3 of the Owners Manual - 'Instrument Panel Brightness'

"Press both instrument panel brightness buttons at the same time to turn the night panel mode on or off.

Night panel mode lights up the speed, information display an warning reminders while the rest of the instrument panel lights are off."

What this means is the only gauge that works is Speedometer and the DIC. When you press both buttons again you can see the gauges 'jump' back to life.

It looks pretty weird at night with only the Speedometer and DIC light up. But you do get rid of all that 'Pontiac Red' night lighting.

If the headlights are set to Auto and it's daylight the 'night panel mode' has no effect. But if it daylight and the headlights are manually turned off then you can turn 'night panel mode' on or off.

I had the same experience when I test drove a V6. My intent all along had been to buy a GT (which I have done) but I wanted to get a feel for the car's driving dynamics.

The V6 was a noisy and it felt overworked. I'm sure some of this had to do with it being a 0-mile car. The transmission did a great job of keeping it in the proper place in the powerband, though.

Get yourself in a GT. You won't be disappointed.

I don't have much to compare the GT to though. Heck, I didn't even test drive it before I bought it. LOL

Doesn't the G8 V6 have a 5 speed xmission? That's surpising, considering the G6 GXP has the same V6 engine, and it has the 6 speed. I wonder why the G8 V6 is only 5 spd?

i test drove the v6 today 4/5/08. It sounds like what we used to do many years ago and that was to take off the air cleaner in a car to get more air into the carb when ready to drag race. All i heard was the engine noise as i stepped on the pedal. When i went back to the dealership i asked to test drive the GT. You can not here the engine when you step on the gas..Go GT is the way

I drove the V8 and while it moves with authority it isn't what I'd call explosive or neck-snapping. I can't imagine how much heavier and more lethargic it feels with a V6...

And to think over at GMI they are cheerleading the idea of putting a four cylinder in this car and the Camaro.

Yes you're right, plus possibly limited availability of the 6 speed just yet.
Just be glad they don't send you the lower powered V6 connected to the now ancient 4 speed as per the base and first step up Commodore Omegas and Berlinas here! Chaffcutters ahoy!
Actually the 4 speed was the one in the Monaro/GTO so it's funny what 2 year's marketing perception can do.. And remember they used 2 speed Powerglides back in the 60's?!

But that 4 in base trim puts out more power (260) than this V6, and has an easy tune to 290.

All cars used to be shipped with a portion of the electrical system disengaged. It could be the case with the Brooklyn V6, and possibly affects the operation of the vehicle. One way to tell is with a stopwatch. Anything less than 8 seconds 0-60 is ballpark.

On the sound, I am not buying a Buick here, GM, it better make people look in the direction of where I used to be when I mash the pedal.

what 4 cyl are they talking about? a 4cyl turbo? i'd take a 4cyl turbo over the v6... a 4cyl turbo with the right size (small) turbo would make the torque curve of the v6 look like a joke.

The 4cyl from the Solstice GXP, Sky Redline, Coablt SS, HHR SS.

Yea, its the LNF engine. Also the tuneability of the 4 cylinder will be huge. These enignes will beable to generate 300+ will gm stage kits. I personally would of liked to see the DI V-6 instead and offered the LS3 as the V-8 option.

I was personally told by the Pres of GM NM, that we'd be seeing the DI V6 in the G8 and that we would NOT be seeing the turbo 4 in the G8 nor the Camaro.

R & T posted the GT as quiter than the BMW M3, Audi, Lexas IS450F, and the Mercedes C63.

I too test drove the V-6 and it fell on its face with a noticeable hesitation. Having driven my son’s GT V-8 the night before it was a noticeable difference. But I thought the car had hidden potential, since I had test driven the Lexus IS250 w\204 HP. I then told the salesman I would return the next day for another look and drive.

To my surprise they had it gassed up and detailed the next morning and it was a totally different vehicle when we drove it. My son even commented how much of a pickup it had over the day before.

When I asked the salesman what they had done to it, he said clean and gas only. I pondered on that for a few days after I had bought it, then when I looked at the assembly date it was 11/07 the only thing I could figure is that it was the old gas since I bought mine in April and gas has a thirty day life span.

This car has all the power I need, but I always want more! LOL!
