First of all I love the car. It's a 9 on a scale from 1-10, However there are some annoyances:

1. All the mirrors are too small.
2. Why the "passenger airbag on" illuminated message on the rearview mirror - it's distracting.
3. I'm not fond of the seat back comfort and recline adjustments. I just don't find the seat back that comfortable - it seems too narrow. I also don't like the manual adjuster and especially since it's hard to reach.
4. Trunk release in the glove box. (I like the hold the door unlock button for a few seconds idea better)
5. Why aren't some (or all) of the features in engineering mode avail. normally in the DIC. I have to shut the vehicle and restart it with the enter key to see remaining fuel???
6. The large "in your face" battery voltage and oil pressure display readout.
7. Why do I have to hit a switch to see outdoor air temp?? They should have just left it on all the time.
8. The seat warmer LEDs are hard to see in daylight.

Once again I love the car - just have to find something to complain about.

What are your gripes so far?

Yeah, that is pretty retarded.

Squishy brake feeling.
Snouts are ugly to me, I'd like a more grown-up looking hood.
Oil pressure & battery gauge is horrid.
Seat back adjustment is manual (s this on all G8s?).

That's about it so far...

Illuminated message on the rear view mirror. I plan on putting back electrical tape over it.
The hesitation on a forced down shift. Seems like the engine needs to take a gulp of air before it wants to let the transmission downshift.
The lack of sharp/crisp shifts in any of the 3 modes for the transmission. It seems like the shifts take forever to complete.
Those 80's style digital gauges in the top center of the dash.
None of these are that big of a deal, but just something I would like to see changed.

The only thing I don't like is the stupid the 1980's Nintendo style graphics for oil/volt.

I am surprised no one has griped about the stalks being hidden behind the steering wheel. That annoyed me more than the auto transmission hesitation.

J Wikoff

Ooh, the tilt/telescope lever. Lots of cars are putting them on the center bottom of the column. Pain in the ass place for most that move the wheel everytime like me.

dodson914
03-30-2008, 05:41 PM
The oil and battery gauge in the middle.

Having the A/C info in the screen that doesn't have nav. This is going to make it nearly impossible to go aftermarket head unit. At least for me since I will want to know what my a/c is set at.

I am still getting used to how the seats adjust.

Not a huge fan of the steering wheel tilt feature. Hard for me to find the right spot for it.

I wish the hood was a true ram air hood. Not that big of a deal though.

I am extremely happy with ours so far. My biggest gripe is that stupid useless screen in them.

lonewolfz28

I've never noticed the indicator on the mirror. I do like the compass on there though. I just wish they'd have put the external temp thing up there as well like my sister's Explorer.

I hate the seat back adjuster as well. On long trips like I took yesterday, I need to change positions occasionally or my back, hip and leg start hurting. That manual adjustment is in a near impossible place to adjust while driving.

I'd like more telescoping range on the steering adjustment. I have the seat leaned back quite aways so I can see out the windshield. This requires my arm(s) to be outstretched which kills my shoulder on long drives. I end up driving with the bottom half of the steering wheel. And yeah, the lever could be better positioned.

The Atari gauges on top of the center stack are way out of place in an interior of this caliber.

I've got no problem with the mirrors. They work fine for me.

I'd like the DIC to be programmable, i.e. you can select what pages are shown and in what sequence.

I'm not overly fond of how the stalks function, but I'm getting used to them.

Overall, it's a big step up from what I'm used to, There are just a few minor annoyances. For the price/performance of this car, I think they did good. I can live with it since the changes would probably add a thou or two to the price.

Slow shifts from 1-2 in sport mode. Passenger seat doesn't go back as far as drivers. Backing up the brakes make horrible noise. No xm and no nav. Drivers side back wheel and tire is not centered in the wheel well opening, passenger side is. Blaupucke or however you spell it, not even as good as my old 300c. Beautiful car with very good handling, trans. is my biggest bitch. BUt, I bought and really like it other then the above. I can't wait to get some staggered 19's like the bmw's.

For all of you complaining about the transmission, I think you'll be amazed at what a good tune can do. Worked wonders for automatic GTOs, I'm sure the G8 will respond the same way.

As for the other complaints, some seem legit, some seem weird, and some seem imaginary. But, I guess if you bought the car you have the right to complain!

you know what I find most annoying.... and maybe this can be changed... but I cant do it so far... when you get to have low fuel, it doesnt show you how many miles you have left... it just sayd RANGE LOW!!!!! That really Sh$ts me! I want to know exactly how much I have left.
I agree with the big ass bright yellow PAS AIRBAG light in rear view mirror. Very distracting.

Everything else is changable or I can deal with.

The way I look at it you don't have any less info than you would in any other car. Its just that the G8 isn't to lying to you the way other cars do.

O.K. folks. So who will be the first one to come up with how to "kill" the center stack gauges if they are really that bad (and they are). Are they backed up by idiot lights on the dash? Can't you add some other gauges somewhere less obtrusive? I personally don't like the center "pods" shown elsewhere on this forum any better.

What are your gripes so far?

I just experienced Gripe #2 at night. It's 100X more distracting then in the daytime. Why did Holden put a switch on the mirror to disable the little compass indicator but not to disable this stupid passenger airbag display?

The instrument panel dimmer doesn't even dim this obnoxious display.

I guess my first mod will be to take apart the mirror and permanently extinguish this obnoxious display. In the meantime electricians tape should work just fine.

Man, I thought I was picky. That passenger airbag thing doesn't seem to bother me in the slightest.

03-31-2008, 09:27 AM
These are all legitimate gripes, but aren't they really just minor gripes in the end? I mean, didn't Pontiac overall do a fantastic job with this car, particularly when you compare it with Pontiacs of old?
And aren't the gripe lists of the G8's competition even worse?

Cashed
03-31-2008, 09:34 AM
The airbag doesnt bother me as I am used to it. My 03 silverado had the same thing. However, that mirror was autodimming (miss that) and the temp AND compass where in the mirror. and for some reason you could turn the compass/temp off on that mirror too. strange. My biggest gripe is when it is about 7 am and my head light auto turn off, i cant ready my gauges very well because they get so dark...solution is to manually turn the park lights on...but who wants to do that?? Gotta get rid of the Atari gauges in the center of the dash. It looks like it will take a lot to replace them with the analog gauges in the Aussie model.(lots of dash pieces would need to be replaced) But I love it...compared to my GTO...this thing is much more luxurious (and almost as powerful!!)

Yes, yes, yes and yes. With a little more refinement this car could have been nearly perfect. It's close but there are a few rough edges that can be easily forgiven given the price.

I'll add my list. I don't think I'm covering anything new - these are the things that bug me, though.

1. NO SPARE TIRE
2. NO SPARE TIRE
3. NO SPARE TIRE
4. DIC and radio screens wash out in daylight - hard to read.
5. The persistent AIRBAG indication on the rearview mirror - which will be fixed with a narrow strip of black electrical tape
6. The center voltmeter and oil pressure indicators - they use up a lot of real estate and their prominence in the center is kind of misplaced
7. The glove box cover is an indication of how Holden and Pontiac met a price point, if you catch my drift
8. The 12V outlets are not powered with the key off, which means that I can't charge my cell phone while the car is parked.

WHAT I LIKE:

Just about everything else. :yumyum:

A lot of the items you guys complain about are the result of another culture (Aussies) doing the basic work, especially in the electrical area. On the seatback recliners, the inspiration came from the Germans, who are fond of manual, rotary knob adjustments. Things like functional Ram Air were taled about but quickly dismissed, due to the fact the scoops Design wanted (and got) are in a low-pressure area of the hood.

I don't waist my money with locking gas caps.. Wal-mart and every hardware store in the US sells keys for them.. They're called Channel-Locks. When my dad's locking gas caps locking mechanism broke, he got a pair out and got the gas cap off easier than he ever did with a key....

I guess on a good note, if you see that your gas tank door has been tampered with, you know someone either stole fuel, attempted to steal fuel for put something you may not like in your gas tank.

I hate that the auto-down window is time sensitive, not pressure sensitive. On my 01 GTP, I could roll the window down part of the way, or push down further to activate the auto-down. This thing seems to want to ALWAYS go auto-down right when I'm about to let off. Grrrrr...

I'm also thinking about asking VMS if they can tune out 1st gear in Normal Shift mode. It probably sounds really dumb, but the upshift/downshift from 1/2 is just so spastic. Sometimes it goes when I don't want it to and I get rocked into my seat. Othertimes, I want it to go and it doesn't...then it does. Argh! I threw it in M2, and hit some stop lights and stop signs....nice and smooth. If I want to race...throw it in Sport Shift or Manual, and I'm back in 1st.

I also don't like that I have to lock the doors before the remote start works. This is my first remote starter, so I'm not sure if that's normal, but you know what...98/100, my doors are locked when I'm going to get in. I should be able to remote start regardless.

All that said...I really do love my G8!!!!!!

I actually like having the gas cap on the passenger side. There seem to be a lot more cars with it on the driver's side around here. Most of the gas stations I use are a one-way traffic flow. My truck has it on the driver's side and I end up having to wait for a pump to clear because I can't stretch the hose over if I use the left lane.

I haven't had to wait on a pump since I bought the G8.

As for the wipers, I haven't had a problem with the yet. Of course, they don't get much use in AZ unless I'm clearing the bugs or dust off the window.

Yeah, the different sizes are going to be a pain when it comes time to replace them.

I think the having to lock the doors before auto-starting is a good thing, even though you can't drive it until you insert the key and turn it. I keep the doors locked whenever I'm not right next to it anyways. I can just see some fool in my neighborhood getting in while I have it running to cool down and trying to make off with it. It won't do them any good, but I can still see one of these idiots trying it. I just wish it fit in my garage.

Well, I don't own the car yet, but I'm willing to take a stab on this... CD cases are longer from left-to-right if you're looking at the cover, than they are from top to bottom. You probably have to have the hinge of the case pointed up toward the roof of the car. Not sure if the length of the hinge would be in line with the car from front to back or across... you'll have to figure that one out.

Quick note on the auto-dimming mirror that we don't have...

Interestingly, the factory schematic for the mirror shows that we do have an 'automatic day/night mirror'.

Looks like a cost got cut at the last minute, or maybe this is coming for 2009. Either way, that PASSENGER AIR BAG ON or OFF indicator has to be the most annoying thing about the entire car.

I have to agree that the Passenger Air Bag light is the most obnoxious, especially at night. I had this same mirror on my truck but the mirror was much furhter from my eyes and it didn't seem quite as bright.

Right, if the mirror weren't so close that indicator wouldn't be so obnoxious.

I'm gonna stop by the art supply store and get some black drafting tape. That should take care of the problem. :eek2:

I actually masked off the light source from the inside of the mirror. It's easy to remove the mirror and take off the shell. You can slightly pry the mirror from the LED panel and insert a piece of tape to block any light from illuminating the display. The modification is invisible from outside the mirror. (however taping over the external display is easier).

Agreed. You cannot see those darn indicator lights. The result of modifying a vehicle from a climate (down under) where heated seats are not required?

Also, aren't the heating settings backward? It starts off with the lowest of three settings. Shouldn't it start with the highest heating setting and allow you to gradually turn down the heat with each push of the button as your ass slowly warms up? Am I right on this?

MY BIGGEST GRIPE! ALL YOU GUYS WITH LITTLE GRIPES! I have owned over 60 new cars and this is one of the best ever out of the box! Only time will tell if I feel the same in 2 or 3 years. I already have a full sized spare in mine, courtesy of my 04' GTO. Airbag light on is the same as my Denali. Gas cap on right is the same as the Taurus's, Volvo's and many other cars. SEE THE KIA AD ON TV!

Personally, my best friend's new 08' 535 BMW Wagon is a real CF. If you want to be "tested" by something, TRY "I DRIVE"

You might want to take the GTO wheel out of there. If memory serves me (which it may not, so someone else please chime in) I don't believe it will fit properly.

I just picked up the car today and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! Wonderful car. I think the center gauges would be awesome if they moved to a voice like KITT used to!! But I digress. I thought the car came with "Homelink" capabilities so I can program up to 3 garage doors but it doesn't appear to. Did anyone else think it was going to? I thought I read it in a brochure somewhere. Similar to the Auto-dimming mirror, why would they not include this feature? I could do without the separate profiles for each key, separate audio settings for each source and trade it for Homelink and auto-dimming mirror that displays the temperature along with the direction.

I've only put 40 miles on it thus far so I need time to explore, discover, experience and enjoy all that G8 has to offer.

Agree with the air bag light and slow gear changes but I can get used to those. What really gets me is when the auto lights go off the instrument panel is are hard to see until it gets really light due to it being so recessed. Yes you can turn the parking lights on or to get speed switch to digital readout but who wants to have to do that all the time?

It fits! READ MY OTHER POSTS!

GO AHEAD AND BUY A WHEEL AND TIRE FROM TIRERACK? CHEAPEST 18" with General UHP is still almost $300.! My way is cheap for little if any use!

Air bag light is not cool! Similar to other GM designs like our Denali XL, only mirror is out of the normal view on that car.

8. The 12V outlets are not powered with the key off, which means that I can't charge my cell phone while the car is parked.

That one caught me off guard. I like to keep my Sirius satellite radio plugged in (on pause) when I go in store for a few minutes. Can't do that on the G8....

I guess some will look at that as a plus. I ran the battery down on my 04 Silverado when it was new because I left the radar detector plugged in.....

Oh, that 90-degree turn!

I confirmed my idiocy yesterday afternoon as soon as I got into the car. :eek2:
I have partially redeemed myself on the subject of the center console and the fitment of standard CD jewel cases.

They don't fit square no matter which way you turn 'em - sideways, lengthwise, or spline up. They just don't fit except at an angle.

An extra 1/2" in either width or depth of the console would have done it.

Do you Guys Down Under not carry CDs around in your cars?

I would like to see someone make a set of analog gauges that match the look of the speedo and tach and will fit in the dash indent where the Nintendo Oil and Volt displays are. That would look much better. along with a set of good instruction on how to connect it would really sell to G8 owners.

That's a great idea. I would still like to have an ammeter and oil pressure readout somewhere, but just not that big and cheesy looking.

Only a couple here...

1.) I get an occasional Chassis squeek and groan once in a while at very low speeds... I'm equating this to being brand new and not quite broken in yet but time will tell...

2.) When the car sits overnite or for a longer period of time I get what feels like a slipping action in the tranny when it first goes into gear. Once things are warmed up it's fine... I'm definatly going to keep a close eye on this one as it actually has me a bit concerned...

It seems like a lot of people have mentioned this issue. I don't think everyone has equated it to the transmission being cold, though. Just that it slips in (I think) 1st gear. I'm used to driving an automatic, so I would have thought the A6 in the G8 would be just like driving any other auto, but I'm starting to have my doubts. I hope there aren't any problems lurking there. I wish somebody knowledgeable could explain the slipping issue and put all of our minds at ease.

Mine doesn't slip so much as it just seems a bit abrupt in the 1-2 shift. It's usually just the first shift out of the driveway, it clears up with very little warmup.

yeah, that's pretty much it... this morning I pulled out, gave it some gas and it revved up about 500 rpm without anything... I let off the gas and then back in again and it took right off and cleared up within a few blocks... definatly not a good feeling on a car like this...

I did also notice that you must make sure you're stopped completely before switching from reverse to drive otherwise it's huge slam into gear and shakes the car! WOAH! that one caught me off gaurd. I'm very good about doing that anyway but there is usually some slack... not that time!

Are you starting the car and shifting it to drive before the system check is done? Maybe the computer has not fully booted yet and that is why it slips, in my last car, if I shifted to reverse from drive and stepped on the gas too quick, it would shudder, they said it was normal, and for 70k plus miles I never had a problem with the tranny, it was just that the computer was not fully set when I wanted it to move. Otherwise, wait till the system check is done before you shift into drive.

I find that when I do not wait, even the locks work differently, instead of locking when shifting out of park, they lock when I release the E-brake, but if I wait, it works when shifting out of park.

With everything computer controlled, you need to allow time to boot up, in my last car the windows or sun roof would not open for the first few seconds, same thing, boot time.

I haven't done that, but I have noticed that there seems to be very little drivetrain lash. Most cars, when you put them in reverse from park, you can feel and hear the slack being taken up in the driveline. Not this one - it feels tight.

I've had mine for about two weeks now and here are my thoughts. Most have been mentioned already:

-Hard shift from 1st to 2nd in standard "drive" mode at low speeds (bumper to bumper traffic)
-Annoying Oil and Battery gauges in center of dash. I wish they could be changed to something else.
-Sunroof control panel rattles when driving over bumps, cranking the stereo, or driving with the sunroof open. (The dealer has ordered a new panel to see if that fixes this.)
-stereo controls: there is no way to adjust the subwoofers at all; only bass/treble and preset EQs. There isn't enough balls to the subs and I woud like to adjust them without having a custom system put in.
-No XM or Bluetooth standard (This WILL be standard on '09s.)
-Passenger seat does not go back as far as the driver's seat.
-The trunk lid is too hard to close. You have to push it all the way down.

Other than that I LOVE this car. It is by far the best car I've ever owned.

2 things I can help you with:

My sunroof control panel is loose also, but does not rattle unless I tap on it, however to prevent this opened it and lined the edge with a couple of layers of black tape, and now it fits snug. It is easy to open yourself, just put a screwdriver in the slot at the center of the rear edge and push the tab inside towards the windshield.

As for the subs in the back, you can adjust them, see this thread:

http://g8board.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1617

They were much better after the adjustment, basically it is a gain control and provide more punch now.

Sometimes it is better to fix it yourself then let the dealer do it.

Thanks! I'll adjust the subs today and get some tape as well.

I forgot one other minor complaint...the cup holders. If you put anything other than a can in them the two drinks press against each other and tilt. If it were half an inch wider it would be perfect.
