I leased so took all the warranties to cover the car for mileage, wear etc. I think the extended bumper to bumper was $595 or $695.. dont recall but i know it was under $800. It's refundable as well if you sell the car, prorated of course.

A couple of points:

Of course, we all realize that on a new G8, you already have a 5 year 100k powertrain warranty, so “all you're buying” with the extended warranty is coverage of everything else.

So.

While an A/C failure or an instrument panel failure or a radio \ CD player failure may not be likely – and will not immobilize you – I doubt many here would count the likely cost of diagnosis & analysis ( $80 - $90 per hour?? ) disassembly \ reassembly plus the cost of parts to be trivial.

Some may say: “You'll find, on average, that actual expected costs of repair will be less than the cost of the prepaid service plan (that's how GM makes a profit selling these plans), so you may decide not to buy an extended warranty at all.”

I’d say: As any such plan is designed to make money for the seller – and to provide a finite limit on ‘expected costs’ for the buyer.

I’d plan to buy an extended warrantee – to, and a bit past, where I expect to either sell or trade the car – like I did with my Corvette.

Some may also say: “In general, I think most people will come out better by budgeting for repairs, setting the money aside and paying as needed. At the end of the day, most people will wind up with more money left in their pockets than if they bought the prepaid service plan.”

In general, that’s true. In general, however, most people will not have a multiple solenoid & PCM replacement within the first 9 months \ 11,000 miles. Yet, I did – and I am VERY glad that the replacement of those items was handled at no ( additional ) cost to me.

I can easily see where a single instance of anything that requires tearing into the dash area could easily run over $500, with the labor required to do that. Plus part(s). And the GMPP extension I was looking at is $700 - $800. For my Corvette.

And I’d buy again from the Dealer where I bought the GMPP extension for my Corvette – at a very substantial discount. By email.

BTW: The price stays the same, up until either 1 year or 12,000 miles.
Then rises.
I drive over 12,000 miles / year, so I bought mine at 11,500 miles – and about 9 months into my Corvette ownership.

So – works for me.

YMMV.

Was the quote you mentioned for the GM Protection Plan (GMPP) - Major Guard?

Was the quote the 5 year/100K or the 6 year/100K

The best I could find for my G8/GT was the GMPP - Major Guard 6 year/100K for $950 from another dealer.

I financed my GT through the Pentagon Federal Credit Union, and they asked me if I was interested in an extended warranty. I said I was and received several calls and E-mails from vendors. My question was whether or not I should buy now or later (I intend to buy - saved me a bundle on my '97 GTP at about the seven year point) but I questioned the double coverage. I want something to pick up in both miles and months when the basic coverage expires, as I keep my cars a long time. I was told I could do that, but the cost would be higher. No problem with that because I will be getting something I wouldn't have if i bought now, coverage beyond 36000 miles on bumper to bumper and 5 years on powertrain. I'll have only about 40,000 miles on the clock in five years.

I got one through my insurance company for around $6/month extra. Good for 7 years/100k miles with $200/deduc.

It's just kinda a pain, being as say I drop my tranny at 50k. I gotta call first and get my claim approved first before I just drop my car off..

Again - the GM drivetrain is covered - for 5/100,000...
That tranny exploding at 50k is already covered.

What sort of modifications will insurance warrant? Will they deny coverage on a failure due to an aftermarket product?

not when you have 50k miles but bought it 5 years and 1 day ago :eek2:

There are a wide variety of GMPP plans durations & mileage limits.

I typically drive roughly 16 to 17,000 miles per year.

For my Corvette, I bought a 48/60/100.
That is 48 months ( total )
/ 60,000 miles
( added to the mileage at the time of purchase )
/ and $100 deductible.

This covers me to 4 years & 71,500 miles,
since I purchased when I had 11,500 miles on the car –
And it was still considered ‘new’ for GMPP pricing purposes . . .

Last year, I paid $675 – for that insurance \ “peace of mind”.

You can opt for up to ( as I recall ) 84 months & 100,000 miles
And $0, $100, or $200 deductible.

This is transferable to another purchaser.
YMMV.

Okay... In 6 years when I have 101k miles.... And that reminds me.. I wanted to laugh when the idiot salesman told me, "The G8's have a better warranty than the Chargers".. Wonder how that is when the Charger's come with Lifetime powertrain warranty???

I don't know.. I know with the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 if the stealer ship can prove that an aftermarket part caused a failure, then they don't have to warranty it. So basically I guess when it comes to insurance company, it would be best to play stupid..

Well, if you sell a Charger after 3 or 4 years, then you have no warranty (because the Lifetime reverts to 3yr/36k after it's sold, I believe), whereas you'll have 1 or 2 years of Pontiac's warranty left on the G8.

I'm most worried about powertrain anyhow. I expect GM to cover any electronic, interior, etc. problems for 5yr/100k no matter what I do to the powertrain, whether they'll willingly do it or not. I guess insurance would have to cover it if I add the supercharger to my policy (to avoid fraud.. and have a ~$6500 product insured) and THEN added warranty coverage afterward. They wouldn't be able to deny knowledge of aftermarket products on my vehicle (or at least they'll be able to tell me they can't cover me right off the bat).
