: Remote controlled mufflers
Cajun 03-31-2008, 02:40 PM I know there have been multiple "exhaust" threads, but my search did not turn up a previous discussion of remote controlled mufflers - mufflers that can sitch from quiet to loud by switch.
Here's a video of such mufflers (by Wortec) on a Holden switching from quiet to loud:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1DQ8y1xmJI
Based on my personal needs, such a muffler would be perfect. It would be in "quiet" most of the time (like when my wife is driving), but it would give me the ability to send warning revs to Honda Civics, Mustang GT's, etc. :-) Lots of other guys on here have said that they also would like to have a "loud" option, but don't want the drone at highway speeds.
Has anyone located or had experience with - maybe you guys that own GTO's ??? Maybe a few of the performance shop owners that are on board here have experience with these types of mufflers and could say which brand might work best on the G8.
I saw a guy in a new Z06 demonstrating his at the racetrack. His even had a remote on his keychain! They were pretty cool!
Lastly, I do realize that this is not going to be a HP-gaining venture. I am just looking for a sound enhancement that I can "turn off" most of the time.
boostedG8 03-31-2008, 05:29 PM I have seen/heard a couple vehicles with q-tec cutouts before, here is a link: http://www.quicktimeperformance.com/QTEC/index.php... I'm sure most exhaust shops could fab this up to work with your system...

I was about to recommend the same thing because I too want quiet most of the time but obnoxious whenever I want. I imagine it should sound something like this..

Such a fancy name for cutouts

Hi,
As the login name says I am from the company that make the system you are looking at.
The system is the one used on the VXR8 Carbon Edition and an evolution of the VXR500 project.
We are currently inviting tenders from companies in America to manufacture our systems for the G8.
Also we are looking for dealers to supply the whole of the "Wortec" G8 range of upgrades which include Air intake systems, Superchargers, Suspension, wheels and much more.
Keep an eye on the web site www.wortec.co.uk or look for a sponsors link at the left of this site when we are ready.
Thanks
Ausstar 04-01-2008, 02:55 PM here is the problem i am concerned about.... the AFM system greatly effects the sound on these cars. It will sound as if its missing with an after market set up. thats why there are so many dampening units in the whole line. The big resonator after the cats are straight through so they dont really impede the flow. its the big a$$ rubbish bin size mufflers iin the back that create all the back pressure and mute sound. I have magnaflows coming tomorrow so we'll see how it sounds. If its not enough then the dual in and out magna to replace the res up front which has the crossover inside should open it up more.
So IMHO, the cutouts after the cats wont sound that good due to the AFM.... can we get an expert to clarify on this ....??? I dont know for sure.
This is what my exhaust guy told me: "The stock system is great other than the rear muffs and maybe the lack of crossover in the resonator. But the size is fine, unless you put any serious extra power in the motor. AFM makes the exhaust at idle sound like its missing.!!"

AFM is not "on" 100% of eth time and especially whenyou stomp hard on that linear pedal farthest to the right. So if the cutout only opens under WOT, then it will never sound as if it's a 4-banger.
One place to look for parts to build your own is in the Corvette parts bin for what makes up the optional butterfly exhaust valve and controls. GM says it's good for 6 hp, IIRC.
Ryan M 04-01-2008, 03:37 PM My friend has one of these (similar) on his firebird. Sounds great

I'm not worried that much about cutouts open and AFM sounding funky. I can imagine some situations where I might be cruising around at about 30mph with cutouts open, but most places will be stop/start or WOT, like at a red light (I'll open them after some ricer pulls up beside me and looks snidely so I can watch him crap his pants) or shopping center (hopefully get a little more respect/people won't cut me off).
I'm not sure where exactly cutouts are usually installed, but there's no reason you couldn't have them bypass only the mufflers. I'd probably have them bypass as much as I can (can you bypass the cats or is there no piping between the headers and the cats?).
My quandary lies on whether or not cutouts are going to mess up a tune. If you tune for cutouts open, are you going to risk detonation or some other problem when you have them closed? Also, if you tune it for cutouts closed, are you forfeiting any possible substantial power gain that you might've had while tuning for open?
HANNlBAL KING 04-02-2008, 09:16 AM I will probably leave my stock mufflers on but run a true dual 3" x-pipe setup with some sort of bullet mufflers and cutouts before the flanges to the stock mufflers.
Should be nice and quiet with the cutouts closed and nice and loud with them open :)
StolenFox 04-02-2008, 10:36 AM A word of caution: Be very carefull how close to the rear 02's you position cutouts. Reversion sometimes allows fresh oxygen to be pulled inside the exhaust stream of an open cutout and wreaks havoc with your o2 readings. CEL's and lousy performance can result. Many GTO guys found out the hard way.....

HANNlBAL KING 04-02-2008, 12:10 PM My cutouts would be at the very back of the car, right before the mufflers ;)

Thanks for the reply. Could you speak to Ausstar's concern about AFM??
wortec1 04-02-2008, 05:09 PM If you don't like the sound at idle when in V4 mode you can turn off AFM via the tune or make sure it does not function at idle by moving up the thresholds to activate the system.
Our system only has one rear silencer on each bank and a crossover up front.
The pipework is straight through on both Loud and Quiet settings so no restrictions at all and ranges from 2.5" to 3" along the system.
All the sound changes are made in the rear box so the sound and gases exit the tail pipe in loud and quiet mode so no problems with O2 sensors etc like cutouts.
our web site has a video and a sound chart which help to show how it works.................
Don't stress over the UK price as we will manufacture in the USA for you guys so it should be good value.

The few times I've checked the AFM at idle on my G8 everything was 'All Active'.

yeah, as far as I've heard, it will fire on all 8 at idle. It takes some velocity to get AFM to kick in.

they suck and sound crappy

Lets see some more pics of the volume selctable exhaust. Pics on the website look great but how about additional details. I am curious how the change is made given the bulge in the muffler assemblies. Great looking stainless welds by the way...

What does he have done to the exhaust?
dodson914 04-03-2008, 09:37 AM What does he have done to the exhaust?
IIRC, those are straight pipes. He has since added an x pipe and it sounds 1,000 times better. I will see if I can find a link to his thread.

Thanks, I knew I had seen it on here somewhere. I thought I posted in the thread but I guess I didn't have anything nice to say so I didn't post. LOL
I think I also got your exhaust confused with his. You added the x pipe, right? LOL Everything is running together.

Cajun 04-03-2008, 09:15 PM ^^^ Damn, that VXR8 rear is so damn sexy. :yumyum:
Cajun 01-06-2009, 04:01 PM Bump to see if anyone has installed these types of mufflers on their G8GT. The two manufacturers I can find are Wortec and Varex. But, there seems to be no US distributor that I can locate.
This sure seems like a nice route to go for those of us that want stock sound most of the time (read no drone), but have the ability to have the car loud.
Yes, I know I know.... I could just do cutouts. But, a dual chambered muffler just seems like a really clean way to go.
