Has anyone seen an aftermarket airtake for these cars? If not I plan on building my own. Take a look at the one I built for my 6.0 thats going into my 95 short bed.

Looks pretty sweet.
Two observations:
1. Wouldn't plastic tubing work better since it wont heat up as much as aluminum? That way it isn't heating up the incoming air.
2. How do you plan on shielding the MAF and filters from the rest of the engine bay so they aren't drawing in hot air as well? I think that would be the toughest part, but from all the CAI kits i've seen on the market, they don't seem to be mindblowing to construct.

I'll build mine from the spectre modular parts they have. Thats what I did for my truck and 6.0 thats goning in my truck. I'm going to take the cold air box top off and see what it looks like in there. The maf is already exposed in the tubing thats on there. The aluminum will get rid of the heat pretty quickly. I'll just see once I get it torn apart. I'll try to build it this weekend. I should have enough existing parts between my two intakes to make it work.

Wrapping aluminum intake tubes with radiant heat reflective (not insulating) wrap helps combat heatsoak. Blocks the heat from the hottest parts (exhaust manifolds) and allows the pipe to cool when not running.

At WOT the air traveling through the intake will not have enough time to "heat up" from a hot intake tube.
I say go for it!!

You may flow more air with a CAI like that but you will be sucking up hot air from under the hood. A well-designed aftermarket intake will be getting its air from outside the car.

It will come from outside the car, not under the hood. I just had shoulder surgery last Friday and I think I'll be able to use my right arm enough to mock it up this weekend. Might have some pics at the first of the week. If it works out, I'll set this up with spectre performance and who ever want can buy the kit from them. They are very reasonable price wise. I'll probably do some type of plexiglass lid you will be able to see the filter thru. I think everyone will like it.

Cool. Looking forward to seeing your final product.

Since the layout is very similar to the GTO, perhaps picking up a used K&N (with the heat shield) might work. It may take some "customization" to fit to the car, but that's how hot rodding started!

So where does the stock air intake get the air from? The way it goes down to grill I wonder how much would be gained by and aftermarket setup. Just by a quick look, it almost looks like a FWI or CAI. I have not looked under, but where does the air come in??

From behind the headlight.
