Might be due to the new keyless entry system

I thought about that too. But, It's a brand new car , are all the parts going to be this difficult to get?

With the push button start coming on the '09's it's going to be hard to get an extra flip key since they're going to stop making those.

Don't have a clue... My '08 has the remote start. Is that what their talking about?? Or is it the push button start like some Ferrari's and other higher end cars have, were you only gotta have the "key" within a certain distance to hit the "On" button to start the car??

I think they are talking about the remote start like in the vettes and bmw's and even the altima's in which you just keep the key in your pocket and pust the START button. Pretty much what you said...:)

Ashley2dance did you try at your dealer?

TomPierce
04-01-2008, 07:31 PM
On one set of keys is a white plastic tag - call the dealer and tell them to order you a new key and give them that number on the plastic tag. The dealer should call GM to have the key made and sent to the dealer where you can pick it up.

The involved process actually makes sense - if you could just order a key based on a VIN number then I'd just copy down a VIN from one on the lot and order a key and then some dark night...

I understand from the dealer that the processis MUCH more involved if you don't have the white plastic tag -- but your dealer should have told you about keeping it when you picked up the car.

And no, this is not an April Fools prank.

There's a security in knowing that you need a physical key to operate it. That's not to say it can't be hotwired, but... :popcorn2:

Umm NO it just has to be in range, like your pocket. Opens the door by pushing the button, then touch break and push the button. The fab slot is only if the fab battery goes dead. I have the push button on my Altima coupe and its awesome!

It's not that easy anymore. At the Chevy dealership next door to where I work, you are required to have 4 items in order for them to order & cut a key. Current registration, driver's license, & I can't remember the other 2. But, it makes me feel better knowing this. When I first got my GTO, I heard the VIN writing theory & covered mine up in the dashboard. :nono:

The Official GM requirements for obtaining Key Codes are:

Valid Picture ID and Vehicle Registration to verify owner name and VIN.

Then the dealer can ask you for whatever else they need to CYA.

Just checked with a dealer here in Fort Worth area and he said that he could get me an additional flip key for the small price of $146. Little steep for me considering the 2nd key is in my wife's possession and she never drives my cars. But, for your info it is still available. The break down of the price is 39.77 for the flip key and 107.02 for the transmitter.

Expensive... Yes?? But then again how much are you willing to pay for security? I replaced 3 deadbolts in my new home with 3 Medeco deadbolts for $350bux.

Even though nothing is theft proof, but it's certainly nice to know that the car has such good security procedures in place to at least make it that much more difficult to steal it.

Also consider that Australian security systems may function slightly different from the ones here. So, whatever knowledge they have of defeating the US GM security systems might not work.

Yeah but "upgrading" my second key to a flip key is not going to increase or decrease the security. And if someone wants what you have bad enough, they will get it and make it look easy...or they will destroy it trying to steal it...had that happen before.:cursin:

Unless I'm mistaken from your previous posts, the actual "Flip" part of the key is the cheap $30 part.. You can take the fixed key's "Chip" out and install it in the "Flip" key..

Then again a new problem emerges.. Will the dealer sell the "Flip" key without the chip???

No. He said that both pieces had to be purchased. I guess he broke down the pricing to me as some form of justification. The key part (made to flip) comes from Australia (who knows how long that would take to get here) and the transmitter from Michigan. The dealer has to assemble both, per the dealers reply email. He was nice enough to offer to mate the new key receiver to my car. after 146 bucks (plus tax), wasnt that nice of him?? :barf:

Supposedly the 2009 G8 will come with 2-way advanced remote start. I assume that this will take the place of the flip key. Whether or not this toy is actually available by the time the 2009 MY cars arrive is kind of a question mark. If 2-way advanced remote start is not ready in time, I would hope that they keep shipping the car with the flip key. I can't imagine why they wouldn't.

Did you all know when you turn the key to start, all you have to to is leave it ther for one sec. The computer apears to take over running the starter.

Try it yourself

Insert key
turn to start for a a short second
don't hold it like you would in mostly all other cars
listen for the starter turning th engine over

Just wanted to add that

Also, the transmitter on the 2nd key is of a different design than that of the flip key, so you can't just stick that on there.
