I changed mine this past weekend. I put in a little over 8.5 quarts. Used regular 5w30 Mobile 1 for now. The oil filter is on very tight however, extremely easy to get too.

"Regular" 5W-30 Mobil 1? That's still fully synthetic, right?

NO they call it synthetic but the only TRUE synthetic oils are Redline and such... Mobil, Castrol, Valvoline all use Group III Dino base oils and super pimp them and are legally allowed to call them synthetic.:eek2: Want to know about oil?

Read THIS (http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Oils1.html):eek2:

It goes to show you... You really DO get what you pay for when you buy oil. Redline may be pricey but it's SO worth it in the long run. If you're going to keep the car for 5 years then use Mobil 1 or my favorite Shell Rotella T 5W40 "Synthetic" (AWESOME) which you can buy by the gallon.

Whats the recommended oil change schedule according to the manual?

I still use Mobil 1 in my GTP. If I had purchased it new I would have went with AMSOIL but Mobil 1 is good enough, and its better than the regular stuff that was in it before.

Also, MY local Buick, Pontiac, GMC & Suzuki dealer uses RECYCLED oil (5w-30). Right out of the drum its much darker than any new oil I have seen. It also looks very dark, if not black, after its been in a car for 2-3k miles

Im sure almost ANY oil will outperform the crap the dealer uses and charges $35 for. My self-change with M1 and ACDelco PF-47 costs $30.

Yea, but is that including almost 9 quarts of oil??

I used the regular Mobile 1 that is NOT synthetic. The one that cost about $2 a quart. :) I changed mine at 1K miles for the brand new engine....then I will change at 5K intervals and will switch to full synthetic for the 10K change. Some people will say a waste of money to change at 1k but I guess that's old school thinking and it gives me peace of mind.

Think again, 5W-40 is not the recommended viscosity for the G8.

Whats the recommended oil change schedule according to the manual?

Follow the Oil Life System monitor. It uses a specific algorithm and actually calculates the viscosity of the oil. GM SWEARS by this and will back you 110% if you follow it. Don't let the dealer, or your old notions, tell you that you need to change the oil sooner.

Otherwise following the Simplified Maintenance scheduling GM recommends:

http://www.gm.com/corporate/responsibility/environment/maintenance/simplified_maintenance_040104.jsp

The first time the message on the dash appears, GM Goodwrench dealerships will offer a Maintenance I service package which includes an oil and filter change, a four-tire rotation, visual inspections of the fluid levels and brakes and a resetting of the system. The next time the message appears a Maintenance II service package is recommended, which includes everything in Maintenance I, plus a professional inspection of the suspension and steering components and the transmission. After the first two visits drivers will alternate between the two schedules as the prompt appears on the dash for the life of the vehicle. Since the system must be reset to work properly and many of the required maintenance services can be complex, GM recommends taking GMOLS-equipped vehicles to the GM experts at Goodwrench dealerships for proper service.
