: How's handling with DR's?

I know that drag radials are sticky and that a low profile tire like 275/40R17 should still have a pretty stiff sidewall but how is the handling with them on the street? Usually things good for dragging aren't so hot when it comes to the turns. Anyone here have any experience?

Thanks!

In my experience handling isn't really all that good. In your case the tire still has 4.33" of sidewall, and most drag radials have flex built in to the sidewall for the maximum possible forward acceleration. Lateral acceleration, yaw, or sideways force is typically lacking because of the sidewall flex. You could certainly drive them on the street but you won't be winning any road races with them.

it depends on the drag radial, i drive nitto DR's on the street once or twice a month for a few days, even a week sometimes, as long as i put some air back in them there pretty good.

if you have more serious DR's you really dont want to get caught in the rain or anything, i have heard of some stories with Micky thompson DR's.

if you do drive with them just be causious and you should be ok for the most part

I've had Nitto DR's as regular tires for the last 7 or 8 years. They handle fine when aired up to about 28psi on the street. Wear evenly and last about 13-15K miles. They are fine in the rain, save for the last couple of thousand miles. They are absolutely brutal in the snow. Got got in my WS6 one time about 7 years ago and that was the only time as I'll never let that happen again.

A Nitto II would probably be a better choice though for better handling. Stiffer sidewall but same compound.

I'll have to look into that Nitto II then. I was just wondering if they were more for everyday driving or more for going "hunting" :)

Thanks for the input guys!
