: Leading Edge Hood Gap
NVR2FST 04-02-2008, 08:51 AM Just an FYI - I figured as much, but someone who worked on the G8 confirmed that the gap at the leading edge of the hood (which the guy in the video called poor fit and finish) is there by design. Just thought some would like to know...
dodson914 04-02-2008, 08:57 AM LOL, it's funny you say that. I was washing ours last night and thought the hood was open.

I thought the EXACT same thing!
jamesbiz 04-02-2008, 10:05 AM ha well that explains that lol. I kept trying to slam my friends hood down because I swore it was still open.

ok slamming was the wrong word. I didn't lift it back up then down again. Just tried pushing it closed again and again lol. He didn't seem to notice tho :p
chiefpontiac 04-02-2008, 11:24 AM The OTR (over the radiator) CAI has to draw air from somewhere. :gears:
G8 Ray 04-02-2008, 04:49 PM I had my G8 over at MPD today to let him look at my hood. We both noticed there are areas for fasteners that are currently missing.

I think it looks a little unfinished without it IMO.
Here is an original image from a year ago with the shroud at the front of the bay:

Sorry, those are the best I could find.
SOcaliG8 04-02-2008, 11:14 PM its comes without the shroud so we can fit the OTR intake easier....:gears:

Just one little strip of duct tape & no gap. Works best on grey paint tho'.

Yeah but it allowed GM to shave 89¢ off the cost of the car to bring it over to the US...
need4spd 04-03-2008, 09:29 AM Yeah but it allowed GM to shave 89¢ off the cost of the car to bring it over to the US...absolutely, I knew exactly why it was done.
Monaro@JHP 04-03-2008, 10:07 PM GM only ran the top radiator cover for the 7-12 months on the VE it was deemed an unnecessary item and was dropped. The cover still can be brought in Australia ;)
jsalbre 04-15-2008, 03:13 PM NVR2FST: Did your source happen to tell you the reasoning for the gap?
Rob Moser 04-15-2008, 07:01 PM Wood Putty And Black Shoe Polish!
I remember that the 04 GP's had the same issue and I had to lower the hood latch and the rubber stops and it solved the issue.

UltraMagnus 04-16-2008, 05:17 PM Ok if tis there by design, can someone tell me why? It just looks like the hood isnt closed.
Maplehawk 04-16-2008, 07:27 PM I checked my Commodore book. Same gap on all models
NVR2FST 04-16-2008, 10:57 PM I couldn't find his message, but I think he said it was to allow some additional airflow into the engine compartment.

LOL It's a funny excuse. He just forgot there is a rubber seal right after that edge which seals the area completely. So there is no air flow in there.
by the way, I was able to adjust the gap on my car and get it almost 2 times smaller. Before I was able to stick my thumb in there, now the key blade will not fit in there vertically. And I'm 100% sure that I can adjust it down to thickness of the blade, but I will have to take the bumper off completely first to do so.

How do you do that?
menace 04-17-2008, 08:25 PM Good idea.
Are the lines along the front guards flush with the bonnet?
gbcop 04-17-2008, 08:58 PM Maybe it's just me, but I like the small gap on mine, which I don't even notice. Nice to know that extra bit of air is getting in to help keep the engine cool. Especially when I get my Roto-Fab CAI! :D
I know there are perfectionists amongst us, so I'm not hatin :D

I don't really care for it but I am not going to try and change it. I think for those of us with black it's probably much less noticeable.
Rob Moser 04-17-2008, 09:14 PM It's hard not to notice when you wash it. Speaking of the first bath... Mine had lots of tape and adhesive residue all over the damn thing. It's white so I didn't notice it until it got really dirty (which when it's WHITE is pretty clean looking). First thought I had major scratches - panic- panic. But.. just a dealer who didn't want to waste their goo-be-gone.
Guess I need to look my purchases over more closely. Swear it looked great when I picked it up. (must...need...new...contacts...)
Someone posted that the opening was designed to let air into the engine compartment. Is this true or just a load....
RRM
How do you do that?
There are a few steps that are involved
First, I remove two clips on top of the bumper cover and loosen two screws, grab the bumper by the lower grill and lift it up. While holding it up, tighten the screws back. The clips probably won't fit after that, but you don't really need them anyway.
Step 2. There are four rubber bumper stops on the edge of the hood. Turn them 180 degrees each, it should drop the hood a little. Just watch so that it won't drop too much below fender line.
Step 3. Loosen bolts on the hood hinges and push the hood closer to the glass. Re-tighten the the bolts after you're done.
Good idea.

yes, the front fenders are flush with the hood.
locrzng888 04-19-2008, 05:16 AM Man that is a bunch of gap, mine is red and it doesn't have hardly any gap at all. The hood sets right down on top of the head light covers and the gap that you are showing I can't get my little finger in it, just the very tip of my little finger. Good luck.
pic18 03-19-2009, 07:27 PM Resurrection time for this thread. My only gripe about this car is the hood gap. It's huge. It looks like you could install a truck bug guard in there no prob. Everything else with the front end lines up nice. When the weather gets warmer, I may try adjusting this gap.
