Man...I was about to rush to my car dealer and tear in to him for telling me that the auto dimming mirror WAS NOT an option. I guess he was right.

OK you may be right.

They call it "Day-night rearview mirror" which I mistakingly assumed meant auto dimming. My bad.

What a POS idea... I mean my cheap a$$ Vue has an auto dimming mirror with compass and temp...

This was a complaint from the GP crowd in '04 as well. My '97 GTP had the auto dim mirror but my '04 didnt. I dont really care because i get my windows tinted.

Yeah, my 99 tahoe and 03 silverado had auto dimming mirrors w/ compass' and temps. however, my 06 Goat doesnt even have a compass or temp on the mirror...so I guess the G8's mirror is a step up from the GTO...

What's the big deal about a dimming mirror?? If you want one, purchase a onstar dimming mirror off ebay as suggested and install it. My wifes truck didn't have a compass, outside temp or auto dimming in our Chevy Pickup. $100 bux later I had a OEM off ebay at my doorstep and 30 minutes later installed.

Come on folks. It really isn't that big of a deal. No car is going to make everyone happy. I didn't care for the quiet exhaust they put on this thing so I fixed it with the help of S.F. I didn't like the untinted windows, so I modified it to fit my needs. As soon as I can find someone local to dyno tune my car, I'm going to modify it since I don't care for the factory tune. I don't care for the restrictive silenced air intake, so as soon as a good quality aftermarket one is made, I'm going to modify it.

That's what makes any car great. The ability to modify it to suit your needs and tastes.

Well I just bought one from a 2004 Chevy Z-71 that has all these options so I hope the plug is the same... It looked like the plug went into the back of the mirror... ??? 50 bucks shipped so I'm not out a million bucks if it doesn't.

How did you remove the outer case to get to the circuit board? I want to take mine apart to get rid of the stupid airbag display that's very distracting at night.

I thought the mirror was a sealed unit.

The bezel just pops off, it's clipped in. You pry open the outer casing with something small and pull the front portion of the mirror forward.

I guess that's another advantage of a dimming mirror. Because the brightness of the message dimms when it's dark.

I went to a local auto show today and the G8 GT there (black, premium, sport, two tone interior, non-888, no sunroof) had a mirror with no big airbag light.

And I sat in a few GMs with acceptable mirrors (autodim, compass, no airbag light) that looked like they'd plug right in.

My thoughts exactly. Now that I've seen this I'm going to tape over that dang airbag light, too. It is distracting at night. That and the lame-o volt and oil pressure display. Can't wait until someone comes up with a gauge bezel for the top of the dash. Other than those two design farts the rest of the interior is top shelf.:wiggle:

Thanks. I was able to seperate the circuit board from the mirror just enough to stuff some electricians tape in to block the LED light from lighting the airbag display. (of course covering the display from the outside mirror surface would have been simpler)

This blinding/distracting display was my single biggest gripe with the G8.

Is it possible to use the glass from the non auto diming mirror in place of the glass that comes with the auto dimming mirror? I just wonder if the space where the temp would be could be covered.
Has anyone heard anything on a driverside auto dimming exterior mirror?

The mirror glass is what makes it dim. It's special glass that darkens when electrical current is applied to it.

Nobody has answered the question..does it just plug in place of the factory G8 mirror?

I installed a new (used) mirror this weekend with auto-dimming and without the PASSENGER AIR BAG status indicator.

I also taped over the temperature so it wouldn't display '0C'. And this brings me to my next thought...

What if we get an external air termperature sensor from the same vehicle our new mirror came from, and run those two wires right to our new (used) mirrors?

Seems like it should work just fine... :)

Bringing this back up since I found a perfect autodim replacement mirror. It is from a 2006 Cadillac CTS. It has the airbag light, compass only, and auto dim. It plugs in place of the factory piece and only required me to recalibrate the compass by driving in circles till it showed direction instead of C. The piece that hangs below the factory mirror is now above the mirror and I will need to cut the upper wire cover down a bit so it will work with the new mirror. I haven't had a chance to take any pictures of it yet.

I too really hate the mirror.

In fact when my year of OnStart is up I might look into just putting the Holden Commodore's mirror in it's place, removing the OnStar guts, and making the buttons on the wheel operate Bluetooth if it's as easy to install as it was in the GTOs.

I see you also installed overhead reading lights on your G8 dede.

It's odd that they were apparently omitted for the US market. There's no flootwell lights either like the GTO has.

I might have to look into installing them then. I haven't seen a new car that didn't come with reading lights and assumed it's something they left off the Commodore for us.

FYI

The auto-dim mirror I used came from an 03 - Tahoe/Suburban/ Yukon etc. It was plug and play after I taped over the Temp and the pass air bag writing. Left the light to show on or off as a safety thing. Also tried to install the touch pad from my G8 mirror but it works differently than the old one. No matter....all buttons work the same. 2 circles and my compass was accurate. OH...best part, I bid on a clearance one on e-bay and got the thing for less than $39.00 delivered!

It can't be from an 06 or newer because mine was from an 06 and it has the airbag light and a compass only. It's great with the auto-dim the airbag light is dimmer during the day and gets real dim at night so it's barely even noticeable, unlike the blinding light from the stock mirror!

Got pics and source to order from?

Got it from the dreaded eBay for a total of $37. According to the source, it was from a 06 with 12k on it. Looks like the site is an on-line bone yard. This is only the second time I have seen this mirror in 3+ months of surfing for a compass only mirror. I was willing to accept compass and airbag distractions and mirror real estate killer, butt found this one at the right time. I didn't want to see OC or a hole in my mirror so I checked and checked and checked until I found this one. My search phrase was "Cadillac CTS mirror".

Pics coming soon as I also painted some trim and calipers during the same weekend. Its not much butt in one month of ownership, I have replaced all door speakers, replaced mirror, painted trim, and painted calipers. Plus 5 coats of Meguiar's and detailed interior. Oh yeah, and changed my first oil at 001234 (I thought it was kinda cool). It was a busy weekend!:drink:
