What is redline on the GT engine? Sure would be nice if the tach was marked!

It appears mine shifts at 5800 in auto on WOT.
Fuel cut out at 6000.

As noted before this post, redline is set for you by GM at 6000rpm. Not a bad thing in my humble opinion since the L76 gets to 6000rpm in 1st gear so fast and with such ease it would be very easy to over-rev and make the bad kind of smoke come out.

If you are using manual shift, you have to shift out of first at 4500, or you will bounce off the rev limiter. By the time the tranny actually shifts, you are at 6k.

If you drive the car like that, it acts and sounds almost exactly like a manual tranny. Run it up fairly slowly to about 4500 in 1st gear, back off the gas, bump to 2nd is very quick with no load on the tranny. Then slam it and it feels like a carrier catapult. The gear whine on acceleration and downshift sounds just like a close-ratio stick.

is this bad for the tranny/torque converter?

I drove my 1996 Dodge Stratus like this (Autostick) and people constantly told me im going to break it. I purchased it with around 60k miles and sold it just shy of 100k with NO PROBLEMS, last time I checked the new owner had 150k miles on it and the only thing they needed to fix was the brakes.
