: What CAI is on my Car?
I am embarrassed to say that I just bought a new GXP with a CAI that was dealer installed before my purchase, and I don't have any idea what it is. I did not get any information from them on this filter system as I refused to pay the exhorbant price that they added to msrp.
First off, I don't have any pictures now, and probably won't be able to take some until the end of the week.
It has a very shiny carbon fiber looking induction hose running from the throttle body to the box. The box is open on the top with a semi cone shaped filter that looks like a K&B - dark pink.
The box that the filter is in has a soft gasket on the top that appears to seal the top when the hood is closed, and the box has an air duct at the bottom which appears to go to the outside of the engine compartment either at the left front of the grill or in the left front wheel well.
Anyone have any ideas what this is?
crazygreek89 06-21-2009, 08:41 PM A picture would help! :slap:
That being said...sounds like a RotoFab to me with the Carbon Fiber inlet.
BlueJacket 06-21-2009, 08:46 PM Sounds like a Roto Fab. does it look like this?

You're right, its gotta be a used one.

Wish mine did! The dealer I bought the car from told me they'd void the warrenty if they found any aftermarket parts at all. I didn't bother to argue, I just go to a different dealership for service! :D
The one on my car is the same as the Jackalope picture. I just bought the car Friday. It was brand new and had 12 miles on it.
It had a supplemental sticker with all of the crap that some dealers try to rip off people with including the intake.
I payed a little over $3,000 under invoice, which included the $4,000 rebates. I may have been able to do better, but there are just not many of these available now, so I bought it.
It is in my garage, and I am as happy as can be. Great car for what it is.
Just ordered the Corsa cat back exhaust, and that should pretty much be the end of any mods to this one.
Thanks for the quick replies to my question.
jackalope 06-21-2009, 09:29 PM Congrats! You got extra lucky you sob to not only get a GXP but a modded one from the dealership. Thats it I'm going out looking for bunnies to punch in the face.
BTW thats the Rotofab carbon fiber intake and I gave you the link to thier page should you want more matching goodies from them.
Jackalope,
Thanks again for the pic and link. Just what I need - another source for "stuff" for my car.!
I really can't evaluate this intake because one, it was on the car when I bought it, and two I am not familiar with these vehicles.
However, it looks good and has a real nice intake sound even though I am driving very conservatively to break the car in properly.
I have never been much of a believer of the hp gain claims for all of this stuff, but what the hey, if it looks and sounds good it must be good.
shane 06-21-2009, 10:03 PM yep dealers do stuff like this, a few years ago when i bought my 2004 sierra they had brand new ones on the lots with some goodies including corsa exhaust.

If you don't get a tune you're missing out on a substantial amount of power with a CAI and a catback.
I bought a new Camaro in 1981 and it had a Hurst shifter, Moroso intake and American Racing 200S wheels installed by the dealer. I paid $6500 for the car WITH all those addons. Man those were the days!

Man your old. I was born in 81. :wink2:
rez0nance 06-22-2009, 09:18 AM FB3, congrats on the new GXP, and extra congrats on getting a Roto-Fab intake tossed in there as a plus. The majority of us on this board either have swapped to aftermarket CAIs (and the Roto-Fab is one of the most popular) or are planning on doing so (like in my case), so you definitely lucked out. The stock intake is pretty restrictive, and way too damn quiet.
Oh, and what color is the GXP? You left out some very important info in your post! :P
BTW, good to see more Miami owners on the board. You should bring your car up to Towers sometime, a few of us hang out there. Check out the Southeast section for posts about it.
ETA: I just noticed on your other thread on the GXP forum that 1) your car is red (nice!) and 2) you're trying to decide between Borla and Corsa. I was on the same boat myself, and I ended up going with the Corsa just because it's my daily driver and a lack of drone was a huge plus for me. If it helps (as I sure would have loved to be able to have done so myself), you can hear the Corsa in person if you catch me at Towers when I'm up there.
DRCUSTOMPARTS 06-22-2009, 11:12 AM Yes I am Charles, I'll be 50 in August but I'm still young at heart. I graduated from high school in 77 which was before you were born. That summer I bought my first car, a used 71 Camaro. Then 2 years later I got a used 74 Camaro, and in 81 bought my first new car. The last new car I bought was a 88 Cutlass for $15K, and since then I've been buying used ones because they kept going up in price.
Hey resOnance. Thanks for the reply. I ordered the Corsa cat back and received email notification from Maryland Speed that it shipped today.
Hopefully I can get it installed Friday.
I live down south and am not familiar with Tower, but will try to make it there sometime when folks are gathering. Please let me know where it is.
All you guys talking about a tune have peaked my interest. I may go that route after I get this really broken in and get used to it.
Thanks again to everybody for the kind words and information.

"Towers" is just what we call a weekly car show that goes on at the parking lot of Tower Shoppes (a large shopping center) up in Broward, off the 595 on University Dr. It's a decently large show, and all kinds of cars show up (domestic, import, classic, some exotics, even a few WW2 half ton trucks and Jeeps show up). Happens every Friday evening, show opens at 5 PM and people are generally there until around 10-11.
There's a good number of GTO and G8 owners that show up, so it's a good opportunity to chat about your car with other owners and see mods in person before you do them yourself. I haven't been back up in a couple of months now given the combination of my being busy and all the rain, but I'm really wanting to make it back up soon.
Like I said, it happens every Friday (weather permitting) and there's a few guys that are there pretty much every week. Every so often though someone will post something in the Southeast forum asking who's going and people will chime in, so keep an eye out on that forum to see when more people are going.

:iagree::iagree:
The Corsas are going on tomorrow, and now I am pretty much committed to some sort of tune after I get a little mileage on the car.
That is going to be my next research project. Seems as if there are numerous choices but I am sure that I will be able settle on something with a lot of help from this forum.
ROTOFAB'D G8 06-25-2009, 06:41 PM I'm in your boat, as I might be forced to do a tune due to some "Chugging" issues I'm getting off the line. I spoke with Steve @ VMS (Vector Motor Sports) and he has got me excited about their VMS Powerflash Cable and CD for $250.00. He said it is a 100% tune that is reversible if you have to take it in to the dealer and you won't have to send in your ECM for 1-2 business days while they reprogram it. As I live in CA...THIS APPEALS TO ME!
All you have to do is send in your MODS list to them and they'll do the rest.
I'm thrilled you are enjoying your new G8 Whip! Welcome to the club! it only gets BETTER!

I've got the same setup and decided on the Livernois tune kit. Easy as pie and definitely feel the difference!

I'll look into that as well. I haven't made a "Final" decision.
Thanks for the Livernois tip! :wink2:

I see this all the time. Just a question but you guys dont have a tuner or speed shop relatively close? I only ask because I got to see first hand what he changed and how he did it. And I asked alot of questions and he explained alot to me. A little off topic but when my car was bone stock, no mods and only 300 miles on the car, it baselined 298/305. Literally, after 15 minutes and a laptop my tuner picked up 24 horse and 10 ft lbs of torque on the dyno. I just think if you have a person you can watch do and they can ask you if you want this or that. Good luck with whatever you decide.
Jaxred,
I agree that it would be preferable to get a tune at a good shop for all of the reasons that you mentioned.
I believe there is a good shop a little north of me in Pompano that does a lot of Corvette tunes, so I may look into that if I decide to go the tune route.
Right now I am somewhat hesitant to get a tune due to the possible effects on the power train warranty. I know that this subject has been going on for years, but I feel that this is a valid concern when thinking of having a tune done to the car.
Will have to lurk around some more and make a decision a little down the road. I only have a little over 300 miles on the car now and would want to get it nicely broken in prior to a tune.
By the way, the Corsa cat backs are tremendous. Great sound at idle and acceleration and zero resonance cruising at up to 75 mph today.

Get some Royal Purple in that thing immediately if you are breaking in. Your call on using the actual "Break-In oil" as they do not recommend long term use on that (Change it @ 500 miles) and then go with the normal 5w30 full synthetic.
The stock oil is CRAP and mine was low coming out of the dealer by almost 2 full quarts!! Had it changed the next day!
I can tune it locally, but it may get pricey. Still thinking!
Camss57 06-27-2009, 02:19 PM I have a question for you FB3, check your pm box please.
BigV8 06-27-2009, 02:52 PM FB3 that carbonfiber rotofab goes for about $500, what did the dealer want? Just curious.
The dealer had one of those obnoxious supplemental stickers on the car with the insulting prices for the worthless stuff they claim to put on the car like paint sealant etc.
This actually made me leave without talking to them about this car because I find it insulting. I usually will not even deal with those that do this, but a GXP being a little scarce now I came back and did get the car.
Anyway, these thieves had priced the carbon RotoFab at $2,400!!! Had wheel locks priced at $250. Ended up paying about $500 for the intake which I thought at that time was a monumental rip because I knew nothing about it, but I guess it was not as bad as I thought.
They "did me a favor" and did not install or charge for the $250 wheel locks. Overall, I probably paid a little more than necessary, but they would not go down any more, so I have it and I really like it.
It is a shame that there are still dealers out there that do this crap, and there are customers who fall for it.
SilverFox 06-28-2009, 12:05 PM What dealer was this from ?
Dealer was Vera on US 1 just south of Perrine.
Tonzcompg04 06-29-2009, 03:29 PM I took my car into the dealer on Sat for the recall stuff and noticed a Red GT in the showroom that had had chrome gas cover, shift knob upgrade, and a powerflow exhaust and some other listed stuff i couldnt find..lol ...........for 3500 extra.... I LOL'd
