: Got to sit in my first Camaro Yesterday!
LSxcellent 06-27-2009, 10:35 AM So the Camaro had been my #1 car choice until 'family concerns' entered the picture... but it doesn't mean I still don't think its damn sexy!
I was driving past the local Chevy dealer yesterday and Lo'-and-behold there is an all black SS with the RS Package! Sorry hon' but were taking a detour!!!
Got out and starting chatting with the salesmen... nice guy but not really that knowledgable.
Asked him who was picking it up and he said the guy ordered it, it showed up, and he backed out! Now he's got my attention! Unfortunately I took a look inside and it was an automatic! DOH!
So anyway, here are my impressions:
-Car is BIG, but not as big as I thought it might be (way smaller than the Challenger in every way). Hood is MUCH higher than I thought it would be.
-Front DRIVER's seat is nice, but not enough adjustment... strangely, the PASSENGER seat has MUCH less adjustability (no adjustment for the bottom, just the seatback).
-Exhaust is WAAY too quiet for the SS model...
-The dealership wanted $5K over MSRP!! HAH! $42K for a Camaro??? :slap:
-All black doesn't look that good, hides too many details
-Engine bay is actually very nice... you can actually get in there and WORK on the engine!
-Interior is Nice but lacks something... details. Not enough details to really make it 'special'. Its good though, and best Camaro interior I've ever seen.
-Back seats are USELESS except to hold a lunch bag or something
-Sun roof lowers the ceiling height enough that tall people may want to think twice.
On top of this, the salesman thought it had an LS2 in it... :slap:
He also didn't know the specs of the LS2 vs LS3 vs LS7 vs LS9... you know, stuff every man should know by heart?
Anyway, its a sweet ride!

jerminator 06-27-2009, 01:11 PM It's frustrating when a salesman doesn't know his product. Thanks for the write up!
Wicked Red G8 06-27-2009, 01:21 PM What's worse than that is trying to sell it 5000 over MSRP. In these
economic conditions, good luck! And of course this will definitely help
GM get out of their financial crisis!
LSxcellent 06-27-2009, 04:22 PM I also forgot to add that they weren't allowing ANYONE to test drive the car... $5K over MSRP with NO test drives allowed. :slap::slap::slap:
These guys are pretty damn desperate if you ask me.
I think that these cars are going to see some big changes in the second or third model-year... a lot of these little details will probably be added later, and all the folks that jumped on the first ones are going to be PISSED!
Anyway, still lookin' for my GXP.

mikemaj82 06-27-2009, 04:30 PM I have yet to come across a salesman that knows about the car he's trying to sell. At the first dealership I went to (where I did NOT buy my car), the windshield washer fluid tank was missing it's cap, and I asked him what it was and if there was a cap for it. He told me it was not for washer fluid and that it lets cool air into the engine bay from the lower grille....
But yea with the Camaro, nobody allows test drives around here either. And they wanna sell the car?
GT G8 06-27-2009, 04:53 PM Back seats are USELESS except to hold a lunch bag or something
werd.
Shinzon 06-27-2009, 11:34 PM I just sat in one as well and to be 1000% honest with you.
1) I like the G8 much better, looks and size
2) Ilike my SS much better :)
On a side note how can they make a Camaro soooooooooo BIG with such small room on the inside
johnh 06-28-2009, 10:42 AM I agree.
I do like the Camaro exterior in a few colors, but the Interior space to me is so small, where did all the space go?
The Camaro would make a fun cruiser, but I'll keep my G8 as a DD thank you.
Perhaps 06-28-2009, 10:55 AM RE: Size
Zeta platform. G8, DTS and Camaro all similarly sized.
Documentation has the Camaro weighing a few hundred pounds less. I'm curious where the weight savings are coming from. Any ideas? I know where I'd like to see the sacrifices for performance.
Good looks are 100% subjective so they can't be argued. With that said I think the new Camaro aesthetically is a bomb.
It puts up some decent numbers though. That's what I think everyone can agree is important with the car. Function over form.
DRCUSTOMPARTS 06-28-2009, 02:49 PM I think a lot of you guys don't like the look because you didn't grow up with the late 60's Camaro like I did. It was such a popular car back in the 70's and I think it looks great. Plus knowing that it's based on the Zeta platform makes it even better.
I sat in one and I thought it was nice inside, the seats are definitely better than the ones in the G8. I didn't like the high hood/low roof, it felt confining. But other than that I would own one, specially since it looks like GM won't be selling the G8 anymore. After owning a high powered V8 car for the first time in 20+ years, I just can't imagine driving an underpowered V6 again!
RobA300 06-29-2009, 07:42 AM I sat in one at GM Carlisle yesterday and that removed any doubt in my mind that I made a mistake buying my G8 instead of a Camaro. The outside I like, but it doesn't grab me. The interior felt like the roof was being pulled down over my eyes and I am just under 6' tall. I could forgive a lot of things on the car if it was my weekend cruiser like my 98 is, but for driving a lot it just doesn't do it for me.
DRCUSTOMPARTS 06-29-2009, 10:53 AM When I went from a 2004 Grand Prix to the G8 it felt a lot different to me, and it took me a few weeks to get adjusted to it. Now that I'm used to it I don't get that unfamiliar feeling when I drive the G8, and I'm sure the Camaro would be the same way after a few weeks of driving it.

Did you sit in the dark red on? That's the one I sat in while at Carlisle this weekend. Being a previous owner of 2 Z-28, first being a 69 Z was really
looking forward to it. I agree with you something jus doesn't do it for me
I love the shifter and gauges in front, just like my 69 was but dash and steering wheel are ugly. Windshield is really chopped and side mirrors are huge. I think GM will get in right..in about 3-4 years probably. Have to wait and see:drink:

Will many purchase these cars at $5000.00 over MSRP, and no test drive?
G8BLBYU 06-29-2009, 06:35 PM Have they even delivered these in any kind of numbers at all? I mean, come on, GM, Ford's refreshed/redesigned Mustang is already out in numbers, yet you can't deliver these to dealers so they can sell them?
I'll have to agree with others and say that the car is nice, the performance is nice, but if I have to sit in an interior for nearly two hours a day, I'm not sure I'd like being in that particular interior. I think the novelty would wear out on me too quickly. The G8's interior suits me a lot better.
And the two extra doors and usable rear seats are a big plus.
2009blueg8 06-30-2009, 10:28 AM well i drive a 09G8GT nad sell chevy camaro's and we cant keep them they sell as soon as they hit the lot had to come in today and have a guy that will be here at 12 to pick it up........the camaro ss is a 2 door g8 bottom line............
DRCUSTOMPARTS 06-30-2009, 11:31 AM The Camaro must be even better than the G8 if they sell as soon as the hit the lot. There's still 11,000 some G8's sitting on the lots unsold.
jimmytt6 06-30-2009, 03:32 PM Camaro the new kid on the block..every Tom,Dick and Harry want's one!
I love my G8, was going to get a Camaro, but glad I didn't. The GXP and SS Camaro I bet are almost identical as far as performance.
Lets see how Camaro's are selling in a year or so..I bet there not selling like they are now!

MANOFSTEEL69 06-30-2009, 03:35 PM One drive in a RS/SS 6spd sold me on one. Soon as Tigger is gone, the Camaro will be in the driveway. Should have just waited for the damn thing to come out.
DRCUSTOMPARTS 06-30-2009, 03:51 PM The Camaro has already out sold the G8 in the first year on pre-orders alone, and that's not counting the ones that sell off the dealer lots. Plus the 1SS Camaro is $5000 less than a GXP and they have the same performance, so it's a much better deal. I'm sure there will be 3 times as many SS Camaros compared to the number of G8 GXP's in the first year.

I actually kind of like that idea don't you :wink2: (these square smileys look kind of stupid to me)
I like the looks yes it's cool and all, but I won't be trading in my G8 for one that's for sure. It offers similar performance (or potential anyway) AND function in the form of big back seat, trunk, etc.
jimmytt6 06-30-2009, 04:13 PM I believe it. I like a lot of things in the one I sat in at Carlisle but there was a lot I think will be inproved in the coming years for the Camaro.
GM already said the hood changing to the style like the BubbleBee Camaro in the new Transformers..much nicer hood I think, doesn't have the current SS hood with little mail slot..looks stupid. And please GM fix
rear bumper reverse lights and big damn side mirrors. I know it'll be better Camaro in a couple years and all the people that have one now enjoy it!!
Cause when they get it right you'll be like damn should have waited...lol

DRCUSTOMPARTS 06-30-2009, 05:04 PM Sure I like the exclusiveness of the G8 but my answer was to show him that the Camaro will sell better than Jimmy thinks. I hardly ever use the back seat in my G8 because we have a minivan to use when the whole family goes somewhere. So my car is used only by me to go to work, or any place else I go where I don't bring the family with me.
The main reason I bought the G8 was for the powerful V8, nice ride/handling, and it's good looks, not because it's so roomy. Some people don't need the practicality of the G8, and a Camaro suits me just fine for most of the driving I do.
rcpepper 06-30-2009, 07:24 PM Guy in the building next to where I work paid the market value adjustment. $7800 over sticker, for a V-6 RS. A freaking V-6, auto, RS. I was floored. I went to change the oil in my G8 at the Chevy, Pontiac dealer and noticed it was gone. I talked to the salesman that sold the car. Just couldn't believe anyone in their right mind would pay $7800 over sticker for a V-6 Camaro. Some people have more money than brains.

Yeah, but the Camaro has a name and 40 years of history that goes with it. Plus it's been gone for 6/7 years and for some fans that probably feels like a lifetime. Try going without sex for 6/7 weeks and that will probably give you a better understanding of what they have been going through.
jimmytt6 06-30-2009, 11:11 PM I think the Camaro will be a good seller..I have owned 2 Z-28's..yes there a great heritige there that our G8's will never have. I was just trying to say that once the hype dies down you wont have dealers marking crap up and the Camaro's will be sitting on the lots like normal cars. I will probably
get one in a couple years..hopefully a Z-28 if GM gets it's crap together.

+1
I don't particularly like the new gen body over the old gen bodies. I'd rather buy an older model and dump some money on modding
bowtiefan 07-01-2009, 08:43 PM If you don't need a back seat, go with a Vette. You probably could get one at the same price as the marked-up Camaro. I think they keep their value pretty well too. But I have to say, I think the Camaro is pretty sharp looking.
PMD G8 07-01-2009, 10:00 PM Saw a a Yellow RS 2SS at a Buick/GMC dealer today with big ass numbers on the windshield...
48,991
:nonono: Yeah ok, does that come with a happy ending with every oil change and a years supply of cocaine?

The older Camaro's are nowhere near what the new ones are in terms of reliabilty, ride and handling. Sure you can make them as powerful but you'll be replacing parts constantly. I know I had 3 older Camaros!

Not a chance, a new base Corvette STARTS at $50 Grand.

beach 07-02-2009, 10:04 PM Always amazed at how overly critical G8 people are of the Camaro...here, in person, all over:judge:
Same platform goodness, but much different car, for sure. The interior is much different, the look is much different, and more so, it's that latter look that did squeeze the space out of most of it and make everything just feel slim...and it is a coupe afterall. Look at the roofline, the windows, etc. and it makes sense.
It's a killer car. Not for a lot of G8'ers, but thankfully for a lot of people who've wanted exactly what it is...a lot for a long time. And, even better, last month it beat the Mustang in sales numbers. That's understandable with the all new-ness and such, but still, it counts regardless.
I'd take both happily, and love things about both, the Camaro for its look and "coupe-ness" (I've missed that ever since my G6 coupe...couldn't have back seat passenger's, etc, but that was the good part), and the G8 for it's crazy performance teamed with luxury car refinement and HUGE space, plus a look that every single day still gets gawks and questions, albeit still being so much more subdued. 2 very different cars with very similar guts goodness.
I'm jealous of the Camaro when I now see one...but I wouldn't give my G8 up for it. I'd just make it the Pontiac's new best friend, if I could, in the drive.
harddrivet 07-02-2009, 10:25 PM It looks great, HOT car, its American, and if its good enough for Jay Leno, well then....
johnh 07-03-2009, 08:51 AM I saw in person an IOM camaro, with the Orange interior 2SS/RS. It was gorgeous. I'd love to trade my G8 for it. I could get used to the smallish interior but, I need to haul 4 kids occasionally and they just won't fit.
I like the Exterior of the Camaro, I like the interior except for the roominess feel. If it could seat 5 (no matter how cramped) I'd be buying one. As of now, G8 stays...worse part is my wife would be more than happy if I went down right now and got the Camaro....but I can't see getting a car I can't pickup all the kids in unless its just a play car.
Blask 07-03-2009, 09:52 AM Was driving on the highway on my way to go see Transformers and I bumblebee was driving up along besdie me! Not really but there was a black LS Camaro that came up along side of me. This is the first time I have seen one in person and from just seeing the body I was very excited. Very sexy... and as it passed me slowly and I saw the rear I was not so excited.... I thought the exhaust looked off. Just looked toyish to me. The SS is the way to go or put in a custom exhaust when you buy it.
Overall I thought the car was very nice looking, a lot more higher then I thought..not as small from the outside as I thought it would be. The driver passed me so I caught up to him and see if he give me a run but he decided to just drive 10 under the limit. Guess he thought the G8 to good:driving:
shudog 07-03-2009, 10:39 AM The same design features that make the new Camaro cool looking from the outside make it a pain to drive on the inside - low roofline, long hood, high window sills, big C-pillar...
Now you could reverse all those styling cues to get a vehicle that's roomy and has great road vision, and you'd end up with a VW bug... your choice.
