: LSD details?

I am curious:

What kind of LSD will the G8 GT have? (My guess is multiplate clutchpack). What is the lock up ratio? Or, is it a fancy quaife-type unit?

Thanks...

=Holden press release on CommodoreRear differentials
All-new ZF differential with aluminium casing
8.3-inch crown wheel standard, up from 8.0-inch (V8) and 7.5-inch (V6)
Upgrade limited slip differential with multi-plate clutch system – standard on SS and SS V, optional on other models with sports suspension
Double-isolated rear differential reduces axle whine
and from another source
Features include:
• 8.3-inch crown wheel
• Isolation from rear suspension frame by rubber bushes at three points.
• Gear set and bearing improvements permit use of thinner, more efficient synthetic oil
• Fluids filled for life.
• Multi-plate clutch system allows more progressive breakaway characteristics, vehicle tuning for maximum grip out of corners.

So does this mean that there won't be very many gear sets to choose from to swap if it's a new diff? Obviously anything from the 8.0" won't work. I'm sure that in time there will be some available but I really don't like the 3.27 rear gears with the taller tires the G8 will have. I'd rather have 3.73 or 3.91 gears myself. Anything in the Aussie arsenal yet?

It's got to more durable and leak free than what is in the Solstice and Sky.

For real? Are you saying that the new LSD in the G8 is going to be that bad AND there's no way to make it better or replace it? Huh? More details please! This is kind of alarming. What sucks so badly about it?

SO does this mean that the G8 will have more issues than the rears on the GTO and CTS-V ????

This is a concerning issue for me.

It will not have a Quaife ATB, that's an easy 2K a pop, for getrag rears, just for the LSD itself (I have one in my Z's), no way the general would add that cost in.
If anything, expect an Auburn type p.o.s. so it'll appease the masses.
However, the good news is that rear upgrade aftermarket options will be aplenty because of the camaro crowd.

hmm, sounds like another weak link, same as the GTO....sounds to me like it's all about easy to break Aussie ass.

From wikipedia

Broadly speaking, there are three input torque states: load, no load, and over run. Under load, as previously stated, the coupling is proportional to the input torque. With no load, the coupling is reduced to the static coupling. The behaviour on over run (particularly sudden throttle release) determines whether the LSD is 1 way, 1.5 way, or 2 way.

If there is no additional coupling on over run, the LSD is 1 way. This is a safer LSD, as soon as the driver lifts the throttle, the LSD unlocks and behaves somewhat like a conventional open differential. This is also the best for FWD cars, as it allows the car to turn in on throttle release, instead of ploughing forward.[1]

If the LSD increases coupling in the same way regardless of whether the input torque is forwards or reverse, it is a 2 way differential. Some drifters prefer this type as the LSD behaves the same regardless of their erratic throttle input, and lets them keep the wheels spinning all the way through a corner. An inexperienced driver can easily spin the car when using a 2 way LSD if they lift the throttle suddenly, expecting the car to settle like a conventional open differential.

If the LSD behaves somewhere in between these two extremes, it is a 1.5 way differential, which is a compromise between sportiness and safety.

I looked up various types of clutch based lsd in wikipedia. There are 1way, 1.5 way, and 2 way lsds.

What type does the G8 has? I want to know whether I have a 2 way lsd, so I don't lift my foot off the gas and spin the car.
