no just very a intricate masking job. I gotta tell you though I'm not sure if I'm going to use the niteshades to black out the tail lamps. its some pretty runny stuff.
4gasem 04-06-2008, 07:18 PM Looks Grrrrr8
Well N.S. is supposed to be wet sanded and buffed out... Did you do that on the reflectors?
I thought about doing the same thing but usually the reflectors have writing on them which make it nearly impossible to wet sand and polish...
The tail lights would look awesome but I have never tried it before so I may go buy a set of what ever tail lights at a junk yard to try in on before doing my cars. If you don't wet sand and polish them, they come out hazy...
SRG963 04-06-2008, 07:26 PM wow, is that legal? Looks nice.

im not gunna pass the bar anytime soon but I'd say NO because I've seen many a car with just the turning signals around where the headlights are so I guess the sidemarkers are just extra.
NVR2FST 04-06-2008, 10:12 PM I like it. I'm planning on doing mine, but haven't gotten around to the fronts yet. I did the rears with vinyl, but will be spraying or getting the front's sprayed with my tail lights. You need spray the lights just as if you're painting a car. I had some done on another car by a guy on the net and they turned out perfect.
I'm a novice at this stuff- two questions:
1. Your arrows look black- how'd you do?
2. Were the badges on the back screwed on or glued on? If glued, how'd you get them off so clean?
thanks
bobbo 04-06-2008, 11:05 PM looks awesome! you've done everything i want to do cosmetically.
G8>550i 04-06-2008, 11:06 PM keep hearing Stones music when I look at your car..."paint it black, paint it black"
NVR2FST 04-07-2008, 08:29 AM Until he responds, I just put black vinyl over the red on the front dart (has holes - so you can't remove it); none of the badges on back have holes, just 3M tape. Use some fishing line and a heat gun (carefully) and most of the tape comes right off with the badges. Otherwise the remainder just balls up with your fingers, then use some alcohol to remove the rest.

SOcaliG8 04-07-2008, 12:46 PM Tips for applying "night shades" or hobby paint "smoke"...
1. Clean with achohol
2. hold can about 8-12 inches away from whatever your painting.
3. Start on one side and move to the other ( do not start on the object and do not end on it)
4. ONE COAT A TIME!!!! (it will run if you dont)
5. Wait about 15 min between coats during sunlight hours. (or more if its not warm)
6. Never EVER apply if it is even remotely windy. (if you can do it in your garage DO IT.)
7. BE PATIENT!!!! it will take at least 5 coats before you see any results.
8. Apply as many coats as you need/want.
9. It will look shiny if you do it right so no clear coat will be needed unless you want to use it (i never did).
10. to protect it... every time you wax your car you should also wax the "shaded" object.
Thanks
NVR2FST 04-07-2008, 01:54 PM That's good info., I've never seen someone pull it off with a glossy finish. It always seems to end up dull.

very true socal, found out how runny it was the first time i sprayed. I like the look of it but I think I'm going to go all the way. I am going to buy the touch up color from the dealership take out the light side marker light bulbs. and get rid of them all together.
VENOM 04-07-2008, 07:18 PM i heard you had to sand them down and such.
i think clear fronts would like so much better, but who knows when someone will produce them. they would look awesome I think.

My guess is never. If someone did produce these and sold them in the US, they'd be recalled. NHTSA will not allow that.
There's a reason the orange lights are in front and the red reflectors are on every car, they're mandated. The reason you are only supposed to park on the right side of the street is so the rear reflectors will tell on comming vehicles another vehicle is there. The front of a vehicle has no reflectors and, therefore, is more dangerous if parked facing on comming traffic.
The orange front markers, I would assume the same, so that one can orient the vehicle. However, I don't know for a fact.
All that being said, NHTSA regulates the first sale and sale aftermarket components that are on sale and pose a safety hazzard in the US. However, it does not (and really can't) regulate users modification of the vehicle. However state and local laws may regulate these areas.
I know, I know, I'm no fun at parties either...
VENOM 04-08-2008, 11:35 AM I thought you could have clear side markers as long as a yellow bulb was used. I thought it was illegal to have clear (meaning clear bulb) in them. Maybe because these are considered turn signals and are reflectors. Very few cars I have seen with reflectors in the back (mazda 6). Maybe I just dont notice the rear reflectors on other cars.

Most reflectors are integratedwith the rear light cluster. The Mazda6 has them in the rear bumper. The G8 has the rear reflector in it's tail lamp assembly. As G8 Lover explained, the feds want to save us from ourselves. But, they can't say anything if no one enforces it. I'd color blend in the relectors too. Most headlights will flash across the low beam headlights on the G8 (& GTO) & will see their light disperse in the projector. As good as a reflector in my book.
G8addict 04-11-2008, 11:33 AM Dang your G8 is freakin SEXY!!!!
All Black and De-Badged, thats what I'm going for too, whenever I get mine!
granatelli 04-18-2008, 09:07 AM Awesome post. The first thing I said to myself when I picked up my car is, " those side markers need to be black". If you were in New Jersey, I'd pay you to do mine. I paint like Stevie Wonder.
