Does anyone who has already gotten new wheels and tires know if this really affects the car and computer and is it a hard process to add the cars tire pressure monitoring system.

All the cars I have had that I switched the tires and wheels on it just sets off the TPMS light on the dash if you do not replace the system. It should not be a difficult thing for a tire place to swap out for you.

Depending on what type of in-wheel sensor some aftermarket wheels may not accept a sensor, then out comes the black duct tape. Since TPMS is now a federal requirement I would expect dealers to stock plenty of spares (even though the online tire stores don't have them yet). You'll have to factor shipping for eight pieces (unmounted tires and wheels) compared to cost of a local store demounting, inserting sensor, and remounting tires.

Since TPMS became a federal mandate, the wheel makers had to make a provision for the TPMS sensors or lose all of that business. The only real problem with switching them from stock wheels to aftermarket is the rubber grommet at the top of the sensor. When the sensor gets installed for the first time, that grommet "crushes" (for lack of a better term) & takes a certain shape once the correct torque is applied to the sensor's installation nut. A competant tire shop should keep spare gromments on hand (we do). Otherwise, just reset them for each corner of the car & the sensors won't know the difference in wheels.

You should lower your pressure as soon as possible.

Any idea what a sensors go for? I'm thinking for winter wheels. I see tire rack doesn't have sensors for the G8 yet.

Not sure. But, for reference, some of the older GM vehicles' sensors went for $45 & up.

ONLY $45.00 EACH? Does anyone know the replacement part # and cost for the factory TPMS units in each wheel? Seems like many of us will want to keep our factory wheels and tires and get a complete second set. Will need extra TPMS units.

Interesting range of responses. :sneaky:

That was roughly the price my shop has had to pay for older Tahoes. Newer GM sensors are now 2 piece designs. The valve stem looks like a regular rubber stem. But, the center has a brass insert that is threaded. The sensor itself screws into the threaded insert of the valve stem. Hopefully, that will make them less expensive to replace & one sensor for all makes of cars. I'll believe that when I see it.
