: Very hot ignition key

I've had my G8 for 3 days now; received it late Friday night. Today with the commute back and forth to work and really having it "out", I got the shock of my life when I arrived home tonight. I pulled the key out of the ignition after turning the engine off. When I pulled it out and attempted to maneuver the key and keyless entry mechanism with just my right hand I exclaimed quite loudly, "Holy sh**", and dropped it in the passenger seat. The key itself was piping hot and the keyless entry mechanism (plastic) was quite warm also. That was at 6:30pm. I just went to check the face of the ignition and, to me, it was still warm....2 hours later.

I already sent an e-mail to my salesman which will be waiting for him when he arrives to work in the morning.

Not that I am asking anyone to feel the temperature of their ignition key when they remove it from the iginition, but has anyone noticed this, or have gotten that surprise burn and dropped it as quickly as possible?

I have definitely noticed mine being very warm to the touch. It was enough to catch my attention, but not enough to burm me or to cause me to drop it....

Hope it does not progressively get worse though... I have had my car for a little more then 6 months and only started noticing it very recently... had chalked it up to summer...

odd though...

I got mine in January but didn't notice it until it got hot here in Florida. I only commute 10 minutes to work and its enough to get the key hot enough to notice.

Mine gets really hot when the car had been sitting in the sun on a hot day. It doesn't seem to get hot on cool days. How the steering column/key cylinder gets that hot in the sun, I don't know.

I drove about 40 miutes to work this morning pulled out the key, not even warm. But I have a GT so not sure if my info helps. But I don't ever remember my key being hot or warm either.

My GTO is the same way...I think it's a Holden trait.

Yeah I've had mine get hot a time or three but like every thing else on a car it won't do it when it is in the shop go figure

The GTO remote key has a rechargeable battery that is recharged by the car. That is why it gets hot. G8 keys have a replaceable battery. My G8 key gets hot from the ignition lock or the sun shining on it. Not really sure.

I have noticed that the key can get quite warm, but it doesnt seem to have anything to do with the outside temp. It was cold today, but the key was hot, on saturday when it was hot and I was driving for about 2 hours there was nothing.
I'm going to try and drive with the spare key (non-flipping one) and see if that does it?

I only have the non-flipping one. Thats the one that gets hot in my case.

ok so i guess it's not just the flipping keys that do it. I drove to work this morning with the spare key and it was fine, but on the way home it got warm.

Has anyone spoken to their dealer to see what they say?

I have a GT and use the flip key and have this problem. Nothing major so I haven't mentioned it, but definitely noticeable.

It is not a flip key issue. Mine only gets hot when the car is sitting in the sun and the steering column and ignition are baking in the sun for hours. It only makes sense.
