: Stock G8 muffler guts revealed!
StolenFox 04-11-2008, 08:16 PM Its no wonder these cars are silent! The exhaust has to travel 1 billion miles inside the muffler case before exiting the tips, LOL.
I cut the case open on one at work today and found a rather elaborate 3 chamber muffler with one large empty chamber with perforated end walls the allow crossflow into a 2 other chambers heavily packed with fiberglass.
The exhaust enters into the larger packed chamber in which the pipe is perforated (allows sound wave dissapation) which then dumps into the large empty chamber. At which point the exhaust pulses then pass throught the other perforated endwall into the small packed chamber.
The exhaust then exits the small packed chamber through an non-perforated pipe which passes through the empty chamber and make a loop through the large packed chamber before passing through another non-perforated tube that goes through the large empty chamber then the small packed chamber before exiting the center outlet to the tip.
Confused yet?

Rob Moser 04-11-2008, 08:31 PM So... when I buy your axleback system and H or X pipe, if I think it's a bit too loud, or after it gets broken in and it's a bit loud, can I add some small mufflers/resonators after the H or X, mid car? Or is there a problem with space? (Issue is wife has sensitive ears...)

How much of a gain in MPG and HP?

You absolutely can. More to the point, you may find that just the axlebacks are all you would want. As good sound clips show up on youtube it will be easier for everyone to make decisions.

Mr. Sandog 04-11-2008, 09:03 PM SF, this is just the final muffler behind the rear axle, correct? Please clarify.
I would like to see the inside of ALL of the G8's mufflers, so I can figure out which ones will benefit from replacement.
Rob Moser 04-11-2008, 09:09 PM Thanks S.F.
Awaiting your pricing and ship dates. Maybe I can plant ear plugs in my wifeee when she sleeps. (I shouldn't talk like this, as she let me buy the car, along with the 2 - 6 speeds we own. She's not a happy camper driving the manual GTO here in SW FL.)

lonewolfz28 04-11-2008, 09:19 PM That's insane! Well, I guess they gotta keep the non-sporty types happy too.
Speedfreak 04-11-2008, 10:18 PM Wow, terrible. I wonder how much r&d was pissed away on that lame as thing
2010G8GXP 04-12-2008, 06:13 PM damn that is a pretty restrictive system. I would think you should get at least 10-15 hp by changing it with a good system.
I hate to know how much that company sells these POS to GM for
dodson914 04-12-2008, 06:31 PM Good Riddance! :)
CMNTMXR57 04-12-2008, 10:52 PM It was amazing listening to a couple G8's today, how quiet they were when they started up. Almost couldn't hear them. This is a BAD thing. :D
r.penguin@comcast.net 04-12-2008, 10:56 PM How did you get that bleached blond chick stuffed into that little metal box?
Dodsons setup was very nice. Wasn't loud at all in cruising mode but when you give it some gas you could hear the engine come to life.
Personally i will be taking clients in my car and do not want it to be to terribly loud where we have to shout over one another. But when i punch it i would want to hear that engine come alive.
G8 Ray 04-13-2008, 07:25 AM My clients work in engine or transmission plants mostly. They'll get used to it.

No I dont. "gbcop" has posted some there. My comment was to say that as people modify their G8 exhaust and post clips on you tube there will be more information out there in which to base a decision.

I talked to sales at Flowmaster a few weeks ago. They do not have any plans on making catback system for the G8 - unless they see a demand. But neither here nor there on that.
What was interesting the Sales rep stated that since the G8 is California certified (which means both smog and exhaust decibels maximums) It must meet the 95db rating for California. No wonder these things are so frigging quiet!

Hopefully not. I have Pm'd "DY" and as soon as he has time to get back to me we should be all set. Its okay though as I'm waiting for the wholesaler to get more mufflers in for building the axlebacks.
I want to have a few sets built, boxed and ready to go before I make them available for sale.

Agreed. You should persue hand modeling and give up on the exhaust business :D

Okay, you gys are really starting to freek me out with this nice hands business. Somehow my thumb bent in a strange manner while holding that elbow. My wife looked at the pic and said "who's hand is that?" I told here "mine" and she didnt believe me!
Ive never seen my thumb bend that way before.......Go figure.
Anyhow, back to ridiculously baffled / packed mufflers.

Scissors 04-14-2008, 11:52 AM It's almost as if they had to meet Federal noise requirements or something.
Weird.

I think it met that requirement.... with tons of room to spare. I really miss my GTO's exhaust sound. Even the new Challenger and S5 sound pretty good stock.
HSV R8 04-15-2008, 12:15 AM I dont know how close the US exhaust is to the OZ version but regs for Ozzie exhausts are getting quieter and quieter.
Quote "The Australian Standards are to be found in their Australian Design Rules (ADRs) which specify the maximum permitted noise levels for new vehicles. These are to be found in ADR 83/00 and are currently set at 76 dB(A) (decibels) measured with a drive-by test."
Soon to be 74 Db(A) I believe. I think must people could fart louder lol

Rue_G8GT 04-15-2008, 09:41 AM The stock exhaust blocks a lot of flow. I'm sure an increase of fuel mileage and slightly more power will result with better flowing mufflers.

Not for people like me. I can't keep my foot out of it because I want to hear that sweet note coming from the exhaust. :burnout:

Interesting. These seem, by appearance to be restrictive. But, tests elsewhere have proven that they only lose a couple of HP (test with LT headers with stock mufflers and none). With the fiberglass packing, will these get louder as time goes by?
majesticix 09-23-2008, 10:25 PM I've noticed it get louder (or better?) myself. Sounds a lot better (5200 miles driven) than it did when I first purchased it. Whether that is due to the muffler, couldn't tell you. I'd still like to hear it roar a bit more...especially when you start it.
