: K&N CAI Kits...Soon Available!!!
kbuckert 07-25-2009, 07:39 PM So I just got my K&N CAI Intake Kit yesterday, installed today & it acts great! I hanvt dyno'd my car, but K&N did since they used my for the development of their CAI kits. I am going to post pics and the dyno sheet that they will be posting on their website - 11.88HP @ 4691RPM. The kits just got finished up this past week and I got mine early because of they did get to use my car. It helps slightly with the butt-dyno and adds a nice deeper sound to the car under WOT. :pimp:

MrSudz 07-25-2009, 07:44 PM Cool, I was wondering if K+N was going to get into the G8 Stuff. Competition is a good thing and it choices are good.
BTW I was not able to see the PDF of the Dyno run that you posted for some reason.
Thanks
1NastyG8 07-25-2009, 07:47 PM nice i take it its emissions legal in ca?
kbuckert 07-25-2009, 07:51 PM nice i take it its emissions legal in ca?
I am assuming that it is, since K&N is located in Riverside, CA! I dont see anything on the box or the instructions saying that it affects emissions at all. I dont know as any intake would not be legal in CA, but I dont know for sure.
G8Silbllt 07-25-2009, 07:51 PM So the next question is, what is the performance difference between Roto Fab vs K&N.....
shane 07-25-2009, 08:02 PM that and the roto look alot alike. good stuff
calhoun1 07-25-2009, 08:25 PM Any idea of the price point of that one? Or do we just get to wait and see?
kbuckert 07-25-2009, 08:26 PM Any idea of the price point of that one? Or do we just get to wait and see?
Wait & see...I have no idea where they are going to be priced, Sorry
VT_Hokie 07-25-2009, 11:12 PM They're a day late and a dollar short if you ask me....
pinhead66 07-26-2009, 03:47 AM Intakes are not legal in CA unless they have a CARB sticker on them stating they are CARB certified. K&N most likely should be CARB legal since they can spend the money to R&D and pass the test.
StandFast85 07-26-2009, 04:51 AM To compete they better be lower priced than the Roto-Fab...... since it's almost the exact same thing.

If you look and do some googleing... most of the big names are CARB approved.
Props_Dude 07-26-2009, 03:41 PM I'm taking my GXP out to K&N tomorrow to have mine installed (I was another of the test vehicles)... I'm sure it's CARB approved.
slowerthanu 07-26-2009, 06:06 PM I like Roto-fabs airbox and filter better. Doesn't matter too much since I'm going with a Vararam.

Very Nice!!!
You might wanna tell them that I did not use the MAF extension that came with the kit. I dont like extra wire hanging anywhere and if you twist the MAFS to the right position then the extension is not needed! Other than that the kit was perfect! I am just glad that K&N came out with their kit finally...esp since most other kits use a K&N filter, or at least a look-a-like!
Of course, I do have an STS turbo on the way, so this is just a semi-temporary install anyways, but I am still a big fan of K&N!
MichaelG8 07-26-2009, 08:15 PM I'm actually pretty disapointed. I was hoping K&N would do something different. i think the Roto fab looks better than that. this K&N one looks pretty cheap to me. I know I wont be buying one.

I am not a true supportive person of aftermarket parts where I dont trust the manufacturer and the data they provide. I dont disagree that physical appearance of the roto fab looks better. I would recommend looking at the 90deg bend. The K&N is larger throughout the bend, as opposed to the roto fab which is narrow-er. I dont know about the interior of any others...but the K&N is very smooth which helps with the flow throughout the interior of the intake.
I know it is to each their own, personally I could care less about looks if the performance is there!
SmokeyBear911 07-27-2009, 02:03 AM Not feelin' it...
Thinking Volant here....
Or
RotoFab...
Can't make up my mind.
SilverFox 07-27-2009, 08:26 AM I like the Roto-fab better !!!
lonewolfz28 07-27-2009, 09:57 AM Only thing I like about this one over the RotoFab is the MAF not being mounted right up against the radiator hose...less heat soak. Other than that, nothing really appeals to me.:dunno:
dline 07-27-2009, 11:28 AM filter looks too small
Camss57 07-27-2009, 02:35 PM I like the Roto-fab better !!!
Me too. Mine will be going in tomorrow! :driving:
foxbat 07-28-2009, 08:25 PM chintzy looking...do not want....all the other CAI units out there look better built than that.
Carpoor 07-28-2009, 10:56 PM For anybody still in a 'wait & see' mode, a communiction i just got from SPECTRE PERFORMANCE located in Ontario CA stated they are about to release their G8GT CAI kit. Wish i could have copied the picture they sent of the prototype installed in the test GT. The kit's layout will be a side mount replacing the all OEM stuff. Big difference from the others i've looked-at is that their air tube will be one piece from the throttle body to the MAFS (retaining the OEM MAFS housing). This tube will be polished aluminum or perhaps chrome vs strapped togther, black plastic pieces as the K&N depicts. Suggest take a peek at their web site for info on their products: Al or chrome tubes, HI-PO air cleaners and accessories for a DIY perhaps.
mikemaj82 07-29-2009, 01:45 AM the filter looks awful small. How much is this gonna cost? K&N intakes are usually expensive.
MrSudz 07-29-2009, 09:40 AM I have a Roto Fab enroute to be installed this weekend!!
Monaro@JHP 07-29-2009, 11:31 AM 244 hp on G8 GT??
Rich@pm-fl.com 07-29-2009, 01:10 PM 244 hp on G8 GT??
That is at 46XX RPM, not peak.
Monaro@JHP 07-29-2009, 07:21 PM That is at 46XX RPM, not peak.
ok, but still only 275hp peak after CAI ????
kbuckert 07-29-2009, 08:23 PM I also question the HP numbers...I dont know where they are coming from...they ran my car stock & gave me a print out...298.73hp/316.41tq which seems very realistic to me (bone stock with 1291mi in 3rd gear). When I requested the run of my car after the intake was manufactured (I installed, but thought they would still have the original with the prototype runs) I was given a different print-out which is much lower.
Based on the standard 20% loss through the drivetrain, if the engines are truely making the 361HP, then the 298 is very close(~17.5% difference)! Just my 2cents worth...
008GT 08-03-2009, 05:06 PM I just saw the K&N CAI listed on their website for $356.99. In my opinion way too much money. Maybe some of the site vendors will be able to get that price down, right around $300.00.
r33pwrd 08-03-2009, 05:33 PM tell them to close the hood and redo the dyno ;)
Monaro@JHP 08-03-2009, 05:45 PM tell them to close the hood and redo the dyno ;)
LOL
i did all dynos of our CAI with the hood closed 11-17 RWHP :wink2:

jrc1122 08-03-2009, 06:53 PM crappy HP ratings before.... I had to double check to see if that was a V6 or not.
kbuckert 08-04-2009, 12:09 AM I just know what I saw at K&N....and what they told me...they got completely screwed by some ricer in the past is why they dont post up a range of numbers, the guy posted his dyno's and it was the maximum improvement seen at the K&N facility, rather than the average; of course it was very hard for anyone else to replicate the max improvement. They tested multiple cars and had the same ~% improvement on each car. I do not understand why the overall HP rating is low...I need to ask them about that, but I would imagine that the ~11+HP is very accurate.
I also know they did test an aluminum intake vs the poly intake and found the poly had a much better gain.
OBSSSD 08-04-2009, 05:23 PM I like the Roto-fab better !!!
+2 Roto is #1 for the G8 :driving:
foxbat 08-04-2009, 08:44 PM I also know they did test an aluminum intake vs the poly intake and found the poly had a much better gain.
false......both my cars have metal intakes (slp twin snorkel steel unit on the transam) and aluminum on the opg g8 and both are at par with dyno numbers of friends with poly intakes and similar mods.
MrSudz 08-04-2009, 10:27 PM I put on the Roto fab, Magnaflow axle back and the extreme tune from Livernois and I can say is WOW!!
kbuckert 08-05-2009, 07:17 PM So I was looking at the dyno sheet....low HP ratings overall due to a 2nd gear pull. This causes a smoother dyno run, as opposed to 3rd gear, which is more 1:1 ratio.
