Are they better? Faster? I think none of those cars came with XM radio correct? Whats the difference between an 888 car and another set of later produced cars?

Is it just the fact you got an original from the first batch?

They use a sequentially numbered VIN. There are a few emblems that say First 888. Sunroof was not available.

I doubt too many here care that much. If you needed some special marking to make you feel good about yourself, you may have gotten a BMW instead, and I cry not for you.

Me, I'm waiting for a Pacific Slate '09.

I think you are right. Only reason I have one is because that is what the dealer had with red inserts. LOL

And long with the 888 HP we get a turbo boost button on the dash.

Hey, the dealer gave me a good deal on this one, the 888 has nothing special.....

Seriously, and no I am not a hater.. I just have seen this all over this board and thought I would ask..

I did learn from this post that the liquid red G8 Im looking at locally has a sunroof so that means that its not an 888 car.

I dont understand why people would not want a sunroof in a car you are paying 30k for? all of my cars have had them, even my first car when I was 16, 1963 VW Bug Ragtop!

Ok, i was just asking and I dont want to start a war or flame with anyone. just an honest question.

Make it easy for you to know in about 15 seconds. Open the passenger door and look at the bright strip below the dash, far left side. If there is an emblem there says First 888, then it is one! TA DA!:wink2:

My G8 GT is one of the 888, but that's just because I got to the dealership when that's all there were. It's meaningless to me at this point, just coincidental. Maybe in 30 years I'll wish I hadn't sent the thing to the scrap yard. :D

If you keep your 888 G8 for say, 40 years, then you will get a premium for scarcity when you auction it off, just like the big block late 60s Hemi Cudas get today.

Remember the muscle car era is going to end this time just like it did in the 1970s, with CAFE strangling it in 6-12 years. There will be no more V8 muscle cars.

Some kid today being chaffeured by his parents in a G8 is going to get rich in 40 years. He will want to reexperience the car of his youth. For such a collector, that 888 might have some value.

But it's going to be a long wait.

My favorite 888 feature: smoke screen and oil slick buttons! COOL!

Floor mats, embriodered seats, trophy mat, extra documentation and a stripe package specific to the car... JMHO

How many V8s out there deliver a combined 35 MPG? My guess is zero. That is the 2020 CAFE standard. Now they can sell cars with higher numbers, but you got to sell a lot of them to make up for the V8s. Detroit has all but admitted that V8s for the mass market will be dead. YOur performance engine at best will be a twin turbo v6.

The idea that there is going to be a technological miracle is wishfull thinking IMO.

maybe but we're still talking 12 years away just look at the advancements in auto tech in the last 8 years including the MPG V-8's get. the engines have gotten bigger more powerful and more fuel efficient, there is no technological miracle needed, it's just want. auto manufacturers don't do more than they have to.

Time will tell. But I find it hard to believe that if it were easy to make a 361 hp V8 that gets 35 MPG that the auto companies would not do so. It would sell like hotcakes in Europe and Japan where Gas is $8 a gallon. Pickup truck buyers inthe USA (where a lot are work trucks) would also love it. Yet we do not see a V8 that even comes close.

You might want to know that Cadillac just cancelled its new V8 engine project because of CAFE. Cadillac as a brand needs a v8 more than any other GM division. Ford is also axing its V8s, says small turbos are the future. So the evidence is against you.

Abd the low hanging fruit is already picked. ECM, fuel injection, displacement on demand...they've already been done.

I would be surprised if the 2020 G8 GT can offer anywhere near this HP...or a V8.

you still have to remember it is an average of total sales and like i said it is still 12 years away a lot can happen you mention the low fruit already picked, but still there is more. the G8 for a v-8 already is marketed at 24 MPg hwy, C/K trucks are getting in to the 20's hwy and probably better once they get the 6 speed standard (09), plus you still have DI, take off assist(type of hybrid as used on tahoe/yukon) and many more technoligies still to come. so i don't think we should give up hope just yet it is still a long ways away(unless you have kids then it will seem like tomorrow)

G8>550i
04-22-2008, 10:16 AM
Sure anything can happen, but the G8 would not be at 24 under CAFE. They call it combined MPG...so if you average 15 and 24 the G8 is only 19.5 MPG. YOu are talking a 75% plus increase to get it to 35.

There may still be fast cars...but a V8 at a mass market price is unlikely. That is not me speaking...that is GM and Ford speaking. Get ready for turbo sixes and fours...the OZ Ford Falcon's high performance engine is a turbo 6 already. Annd smaller, lighter, less HP cars. And get used to paying more....the solutions all add cost, whether its diesels or turbos.

But most of all, get that G8 V8 and enjoy it while you can.

What really going to be interesting is that they are applying the same standards to trucks. Part of the SUV explosion of the last 25 years was a reaction to cars getting smaller and slower and trucks being exempt. But the eco-nazis caught on and closed this loophole.

thats really going to hurt. here in cali they wanted to pass a lbill to add a surcharge on people that buy suv's and minivans of $2500 and give that to the people that buy hybrids and other fuel efficient vehicles. so the family that needs a minivan or suv is getting it stuck to them so some tree hugger can drive around in their enviromentally hazardous prius. this is crap

Agree total BS. The friggin Prius owner is already getting a subsidy from the auto co, who is selling it at cost and subsidizing it with Camry profits. Problem is that these stupid legislators forget that people buy vans and SUVs for a REASON. If you have small kids teams going to baseball games, the friggin Prius isn't going to cut it.

And no one wants to talk about the environmental consequences of all those old batteries innards.

there was a couple of articles i read about the damage the plant that makes the batteries for the prius was causing in canada. i have 2 kids w/ a 3rd that will be here any day now, and we need at least one of cars to be an suv. 3 kids 2 adults 1 stoller 1 diaper bag does not work in a car very easily. maybe they should encourage carpooling if it such a big deal and do it like they did in the 90's here in CA. and make it real carpooling not you get to drive your hybrid alone in the carpool lane. the whole idea behind carpool is to reduce the amount of cars on the road.:gears:

Legislation / politics isn't the key to high mileage, clean, efficient vehicles. And Robin hood tactics in sticking it to the 5+ member family who needs to buy a larger capacity vehicle ain't gonna make the world any greener. With that I'd say the V8 won't ever be dead. Diesel powerplants and boost powered 6 cylinders will become the mainstream premier vehicles. The CAFE warlords standards isn't gospel yet. This country needs to change how goods are transported. Right now the truckers and everyone else are fed up rising fuel cost!!! Unfortunately gas prices will won't ever be $3 a gallon until we stop relying on foreign oil. :nono:

You get the privilege of paying $5K over sticker. That's what one dealer in New Jersey wanted. I then purchased mine from another dealer who took $780 off the window sticker.

I keep my cars a long time. My 97 GP GTP is now driven by my daughter. My play car is a 61 Ford Galaxie Convertible, same color as the 61 Club Victoria my dad had when I was in High School. I wanted a first 888 because it might be worth something one day. The muscle car era did not take 6-8 years to disappear - when it started (mostly due to high insurance costs) it happened very quickly. The G8 could be the same. I told my son that I have promised it to my grandson who is now 8 months old. I got it on March 18 in Savannah GA and dealer knocked $500 off of MSRP. I have never liked a sunroof - I am 6'2" and have some head room problem in some of them, so the lack of a sun roof was no big deal to me. Overall, no big deal. I am very happy with my car and my decision process, and I hope you are all happy with yours. Just let us all enjoy these marvelous machines while we still can, and not judge each other so harshly. Happy New Year.

Those muscle cars did not HOLD value for crap. They were discarded like a week old newspaper. Lots of them went to the crusher because no one would buy them, because they couldn't insure them. Those that survived, and have gone through mega buck restorations, are now appealing to the few of the old baby boomers that regret not having one when new, or selling one they did have. This has caused the crazy rebound we see at the Barrett-Jackson auctions, etc.
