: Manual GXP VS Automatic GT help
zyanthmootar 08-02-2009, 03:09 PM I've been looking at this forum and others from afar. I own a 2005 Acura TL 6MT. I love having a manual tranny, but hate the torque steer I get in my FWD. I love the styling of the G8, but do not want to "settle" for an automatic. The GXP is just out of my price range unless GM offers the 0% APR for 72 months again.
My question is this, are there any GT owners who love MT but can attest to the automatics "sportiness"? Does the sport shift really "work"? Every car I have driven in the past with the auto sport shift never feels right. I know I need to actually drive a GT for myself, but was hoping that some of your insight into actual ownership might sway my decision to bight the bullet or in fact make me hold out untilI can get a GXP. Thanks for your help!

G8addict 08-02-2009, 04:23 PM I think you posted in the wrong section, but anyways...
I think the Sport shift is a bit more fun the the standard auto mode. I'm sure more will chime in.
markw78 08-02-2009, 04:36 PM I find the sport shift kind of silly and rarely use it, but the manual mode driver shift is fun, I use it most of the time...
sand240 08-02-2009, 07:01 PM From the factory, I would say the autos are tuned for comfort more then performace, but with a mildly aggressive TCM tune it becomes a completely different beast. I agree that the manual mode is more fun then the sport shift
zyanthmootar 08-02-2009, 07:33 PM What is the difference between manual mode and sport shifting? Thanks again and sorry for posting in the wrong place.
nathanf2009 08-03-2009, 12:15 AM My previous vehicle was a 6 speed manual...and it was alot of fun :driving: I really wished the gt had the manual tranny....and I couldn't find a gxp. I've tried manual mode and it's not bad for a manual mode on a auto tranny...it actually blips the gas pedal for you. Still though it's nothing compared to an actualy manual transmission. But i'm sure once I get some mods I won't even worry about the tranny :)
zyanthmootar 08-03-2009, 06:33 AM I've been looking into purchasing a Tremec 6 speed manual tranny for the GT (this is where the posting makes sense for this section). It would be cheaper than a GXP to get the GT and put the manual tranny in myself. I just don't know if I want the headache.
mrgrandnational 08-06-2009, 11:00 AM M6 GTO is WAY more fun to drive than the auto G8, hands down. The G8 handles slightly better than my gto did when it was stock(not counting the strut issue) so an m6 G8 would be pretty sweet stock. The wiff won't drive manual cars so... :whine:
I don't think it would be worth the headache to convert it and say goodbye to any warranty.

LOL All the more reason why I got the stick... if you catch my drift ;)
G8DRIV3R 08-06-2009, 11:30 AM nothing is like a stick, but if you get a good tcm tune it will shift hard and fast, unlike the stock trans tune
ADent 08-12-2009, 05:18 PM PhoenixRising got a quote of $6,700 for a shop to do the GT auto to manual conversion is this thread: http://www.g8board.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21149 .
TJay74 08-13-2009, 10:39 AM With a tune the auto is great in the g8, but if left stock the auto sucks since it is factory tuned for for comfort and hot for the niche market segment it should be tuned for ie the g8 gt/gxp owners.
jerminator 08-13-2009, 08:02 PM The auto is plenty sporty, but it will never give you the same experience a manual will. Sure, you can make the auto a better shifting auto, but you'll never get that third pedal in the GT. Trust me, I came from a manual and it's just not the same. I will have to say I have no regrets though. The car is great. -I couldn't swing a M6 GXP monthly payment either...
MichaelG8 08-13-2009, 11:44 PM When stock the manual mode is comepltely useless IMO. I came out of a M6 trans Am and it was fun as hell. I am missing it.
However, My superchips programmer made shifting a little better. Still very easy under normal driving, but at WOT itll chirp gears. The tune also makes the manual mode slightly more useful since it shifts quicker. And like some else said, it will "blip" the throttle on downshifts which is pretty cool. Also Sport mode (which is still fully automatic) will hold gears for you. I took it on a Road course here in jersey and sport mode worked out VERY nicely. It will always keep the revs high and downshift aggresively while blipping the throttle each time. very cool.
