: vararam question...

My uncle and I just installed a K&N Intake on his Silverado SS and my 2500HD work truck. Not the nicest of pieces available out there but whatever.

Anyways, the 2500 sounds real good and the SS absolutely howls when you get on it.

This got me thinking about how loud the intakes for the G8 are, the Vararam in particular.

I did a quick youtube search and came up with one result of the kit on a G8 but it was real quick and wasnt all that great. Nothing in the media section either.

So I was wondering if any of you guys out there had any videos of the intake in action?

20 something views and no replies eh? Guess I'll just have to get G8V8 to let me take his for a test drive....

I'm pretty sure an open element filter like the Roto-Fab would sound a bit louder than the Vararam, since it's somewhat encased. But anything will sound louder than stock because of all the restrictions on the airbox.

I have a K&N on my 2002 Avalanche and the Vararam is not nearly as loud as that is. The Vararam adds a bit of noise, but not much at all.

I don't care about noise, but how is the horsepower increase?

Is the Vararam a PIA to upkeep? I'm doing a performance package this week, and am very curious as to which intake to use.

Thank you.

Neither the stock airbox nor any of the aftermarket CAI's are very loud (although most do sound noticeably better than stock). As for performance, it depends on which you choose but from what I've read most of the popular intakes are getting around 5-10 rwhp. A tune and CAI will be closer to 20-25.

I just put a Volant on mine (with out tune....yet). I'm posted another BK meet for the 22nd. Either you can hear/test drive mine on the 22nd or just PM me and I'll meet up with you.

Anyone see an improvement in highway MPG with any of these intakes on a stock tune?

Only had mine on since Thursday. I'll keep you posted, as I was curious too.

I have not noticed any difference.

Yeah I had seen those two videos on there but they were the only ones I could find and I can't really hear any difference at all. I guess there isn't enough pipe there to make any kind of resonance unlike the rotofab or volant

Since when did people start adding intakes just for sound?

Hahaahahaha LMFAO! I think you're looking into this just a LITTLE too deeply.
I was just curious if anyone had any multimedia handy as it seems that there are videos for just about everything but the vararam out there.

Some people might be bothered by a loud intake so an example of the sound would be helpful to other forum member who are in the market for a cold air kit.

And if nothing else it's something different to talk about.

Intake for sound....that's a good one

Intake for sound? You bet! When I was a teenager, I had a Chevy truck with a 4-barrell carb. It was not uncommon for people to flip the air cleaner lid upside down for more intake growl. ;-)
Anyway, I'm right there with you on sound differences. I'm interested in a good CAI (performance wise) that is quieter than the others.

OR push the choke in 1/2 way to make it sound like you had a cam....

Lid flipper here too...funny...I was thinking the same thing as this thread took off. I used to fight with my older sister who thought it would hurt the "family" car. I'd flip it, she'd put it back...back and forth...awwww....good times. :)

Regarding the videos, though, I'd love to see more. They help to get a real idea of what these various components do...both in performance and aesthetics. Keep in mind, one man's pleasure is another man's poison.

VT. You are welcome to try mine. The RotoFab was louder than the Vararam.
