Hello there,

I'm contemplating my next purchase for my G8 GT and need a little advice. First, understand that I'm a DIY kinda guy, so I'm installing everything myself. Hopefully that leaves me with more $ to spend on go-fast parts!

I suppose you're going to ask what my plans are for the car. It's not my daily driver, but it's not a track queen by any stretch. What does that mean? I don't know, but I enjoy driving it to work (140 miles) once in a while but I also enjoy scaring my passengers. That's the beauty of a G8 to me!

I've already got headers and exhaust, AFE CAI, and nothing else (no tune, nothing). I'm trying to pick a cam to go with the DoD delete kit. Stage 1 or 2? I would rather not do a converter, unless I can get away with something that's not nasty high. 3600 rpm stall is a drag-race-only thing if you ask me. What is your recommendation here?

I will obviously also need an engine and trans tune. I've got a lot of experience tuning old-school TPI 730 stuff (don't laugh) but that's vastly different than the modern stuff. So something like HPTuners really appeals to me (no eproms!), but at this point in my life I don't want to spend months just getting the car to a point where I find it enjoyable to drive. I know you have various options for tuning. I'm 6 hours' drive away from Livernois, so a dyno tune might be possible but I don't think it would be smart to drive the untuned car with all this work done to it that far? I could trailer it but I'd rather not do that, either. Any options here?

I'm also wondering if I should have the heads ported since I have to remove and reassemble them to do the DoD stuff. What would it cost to get the bare castings ported?

Help?!?!

Andy

Andy,

Sorry for the late reply, I've been out of the office and am now catching up on messages and forums.

For a vehicle without a converter, I would recommend our DOD Delete kit with the stage 1 camshaft. This is a great camshaft as it makes excellent power, has a nice lopey idle, yet retains very good drivability.

If you opt for the package above, we can also sell you our X-Treme Cal flash device and supply you with a tune. We've done so many of these cars on the dyno, doing a tune to send to you via email will be no problem.

As far as head porting, I wouldn't recommend this unless you had a large cube stroker motor. For a stock displacement car, I would only do a CNC valve job. We've found that porting the L92 head on a bolt-on stock cube engine will hurt performance, because they already flow very well. The CNC valve job does help though. If you send the heads bare, the valve job will cost $300.00.

Thank you for your interest, please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for the answers, now I have a couple more questions :) What kind of power/performance am I leaving on the table by not going larger with cam and converter? Is it possible (reasonable?) to go to stage 2 and converter without an extremely high stall speed?

I probably should have mentioned that I would like to install a Magnacharger this winter, but that's not cast in stone. If I can solve the fuel supply issues (I think I can) would it be worthwhile to still do the head porting now while it's apart? I suppose at the power levels possible with the blower it might not matter.

Thanks again,
Andy
