Hey Folks,

I have been scanning through the forums here for about a week now and I can see you get a lot of questions regarding the mpg with the G8, so let me apologize in advance!

I have a situation - I am looking to replace my '07 VW Rabbit/Golf with a new '08 G8 V6 for a lot of reasons but more specifically... the VW is getting expensive to maintain and my warranty is up very soon. (I put about 22,000 miles on my vehicle every year).

I have found an amazing, truly amazing deal, on the G8 I had in mind. The only thing holding me back is the gas mileage. Currently, in my 5 cylinder Rabbit I am getting average 34mpg and am very comfortable paying to fill it up. The G8 V6 is rated at 25mpg, and it would be fine if it would average at 25mpg.. after going through the forums and seeing some really low avg's im worried.

Any advice?

~Thanks

I have a GT, but IMHO, if mileage is your primary concern, don't do it. You'll regret it. This car (V6 or V8) isn't about high gas mileage when all is said and done.

You can average great mileage if you are only on the highway. The city mpgs are terrible in these things. That being said, this car is much bigger than your VW, I'm guessing will have plenty of features the VW doesn't, and you might get a smoking deal on one if you buy now.

Thanks for the replies!! You are right, the deal I have is almost one I can't refuse for the amount of car in consideration. My commute is 25 miles each way, mostly highway averaging 65-75mph. But usually about 5 miles of stop and go traffic on the way home, which even the the VW eats at the gas, haha. Im not expecting fantastic mileage, just decent. Is it safe to say that 25+mpg is attainable? The VW is rated at 30mpg highway and I get 34, so would I see similar results?

I drive 25 miles each way as well. 95% highway yet I get caught in rush hour most times (work 8-5).
If I drive sane and keep my foot out of it, I can average - keeping in mind the computer still calcs while stopped - in the 23s. That is with the cruise control being used and going in to DOD often. Being that your looking at a V6, I believe the highway mpg is even better.

Derek - That is actually a little more encouraging, thank you! haha. So I assume you have the V8? Are you already past the break-in period?

I have a G8 GT and my commute is 40 miles each way, with 37 of those miles on the freeway at 70-75mph The other few miles are getting from home to the freeway and freeway to work. I do also do short trips to the store once in a while. I average 21-22mpg (calculated per full tank, not just using the DIC). I'm only guessing here, but the V6 is probably only going to be marginally better. You'll probably have to really baby it and go 65 more often than 75 to get 25mpg, IMHO.

I've got a V6 with about 1100 miles on it. My commute is 15 miles, about 80% highway. With the AC on driving with a light foot I'm getting 24 MPG. If I "have a little fun" it drops to about 19mpg.

On the highway alone I get ~26, city alone ~17

yeah, I have the V8. Forgot to mention too, I do not run the a/c in the mornings. I crack the windows because it has been unseasonably cool out here. I am past break in mileage. I've about 2400 miles on it

I appreciate all of the replies!! This is actually not as bad as I thought, after sifting through the numerous threads regarding mpg's I was seeing a lot of low numbers mixed in. So can anyone now tell me how many miles you are getting per tank? Its 19 gal. which is larger than my current 14.5 gal.

I've only calc'd one tank and it was 24.25 mpg with closer to 80/20% driving than my usual 90/10%. Key is I rarely exceed 69 mph and let the DOD do its magic.

The V6 isn't going get near your VW in MPG. I bought mine when gas was $4.50. Best I've seen is about 30 on the highway and that's at 60mph. I average 24-25 back and forth to work, 70% highway. If I had known you could tune the V8 and get about the same or better than the V6 I'd bought a GT. Now I'm hosed until I can find a used Black GT, but they don't seem to exist. I've got 2 used red GTs within 10miles, but I hate red.

My daily rant.

I took a 200 mile trip last weekend I adv. 25.3mpg with a adv speed of about 75mph with the AC running. I'm running 89 octain and some of that was up hill. I don't know what the DD adv or city would be haven't had the car that long. Currently my 475rwhp GTO gets about 25-26mpg highway, but the V6 is pushing a car that weights about the same as my GTO.

Just took a trip on the weekend with the wife and kid, car was loaded including a snow tire for a spare just incase. With the A/C on and an avg speed of about 120 - 125 km/h( yeah I'm Canadian), that's what, about 70 - 75 mp/h? I got around 25 mpg

I took a trip from Cleveland to Columbus with my son and all of his baby stuff which is ALLOT, ran the AC and I got 29 MPH on the way home doing 70-72 MPH. I got 25 going there averaging between 75-80. I switched over to Mobil1 right before the trip which may have helped. I had less than 1,000 miles on it at the time.

I must have a bad V6, I can't get 29mpg going 60 let alone 70.

At least you guys are still calculating mpg. I'm using gpm(gallons per mile)!!

I have a V8: The best I have obtained on the highway @ 70mph is 28mpg, but that's in 4cyl mode. Around town, um.... well, let's just say I'm in the low teens due to a very heavy right foot. I agree with the other posters: Don't buy the G8 in any form if fuel economy is your primary concern. If that's the case, you may want to consider the Fusion Hybrid. It's a nice car that handles reasonably well for a front drive car. Good luck!

If you are using the DIC for your gas MPG. Add 2 to 3 mpg to what you think you are getting. The DIC is NOT totally accurate. Best way to check is to fill tank ALL THE WAY UP and do it the old fashion way.

But to answer the question, this car eats rabbits.

I'm driving 33 miles each way, with a mixture of country roads, suburbia, and some freeway. Overall average gas mileage since the car was purchased is 19.2. It's getting much better with break-in. I started out at 10MPG!

The only way for you to get 25+ MPG is after break-in, on the freeway, with the cruise set at 65. 30 to 34 will never happen. With your commute I'd expect 20 to 22.
