: New gauges for my G8
Just put some gauges together and test fitted them in the car. I think they look good. What do you guys think?

JHP (jhp.com.au DBA www.g8partsdirect.com) now officially picked up production and distribution of that item.
Rue_G8GT 04-20-2008, 03:01 PM Oh snap man they look great! Share the wealth man. Where did you get those gauges and how did you do it?
I can see many G8 owners wanting to do this. ;)
I definitely like it.
jakkwylde 04-20-2008, 03:13 PM Looks way better than what we're all riding around with now...
Mr. Sandog 04-20-2008, 03:13 PM Wow. Are you sure that's not photoshop? :gears:
GT-610 04-20-2008, 03:40 PM where can i buy these, how do I install them, how much, what time are you coming over to help????
Cashed 04-20-2008, 03:46 PM Nice! Please explain how you installed and tell where these came from. They look good!
This is NOT a photoshop.
This is a prototype, just to see how it fits in that place. They are not hardwired yet, I just moved the needles in the positions I liked when I took the picture. I'm just looking for a feedback on those gauges before doing any further development. There is no glass in front of the gauges just yet, but there is enough room for it. Even though they sit on top of the red gauge right now, there is still almost an inch of space left in front of them (measuring to the top of the dash trim). It looks like I can fit up to 5 gauges there if I try hard enough, but I think it looks too busy after 3. Here's a list of gauges which I can use in that application.
Engine Pressure Gauges (Electrical)
Engine Temperature Gauges (Electrical)
Engine Oil Temperature Gauges (Electrical)
Transmission Oil Temp (Electrical)
Voltmeters - 12 Volts
Mr. Sandog 04-20-2008, 04:29 PM Those are gorgeous and the work looks OUTSTANDING! Personally, I think 4 gauges would look good, but I think 5 would be too busy, like you say. These would get my vote if I had to pick 4 gauges:
Engine Pressure Gauges (Electrical)
Engine Temperature Gauges (Electrical)
Transmission Oil Temp (Electrical)
Voltmeters - 12 Volts
TomPierce 04-20-2008, 04:32 PM Nice prototype!
If you are going to stay with 3 gauges, I would space them out with a little more room in between.
You might consider going to 4 gauges as well - there looks to be room and that would allow you to do oil pressure and water, oil, and tranny temp.
I am assuming that these would be backlit?
I am sure you could sell the heck out of these if you decide to make them.
Cashed 04-20-2008, 04:38 PM I like the design. Do you intend to make them to where they are a plug and play? And will the font match the font on the Speedo and Tach? And finally, can you get the base of the needles to match the base of the needles on the tach/speedo?
Those look nice. Would definitely want to drop something like this in mine.
AUSI-isf-KLR 04-20-2008, 05:04 PM Looks good, the only thing i would suggest is use 52mm (2 1/16") openings so other gauges can be substituted.
yes , these would be backlit
no , not plug and play
And will the font match the font on the Speedo and Tach?
??? it is matching right now
If you are going to stay with 3 gauges, I would space them out with a little more room in between.
yes i will
Looks good, the only thing i would suggest is use 52mm (2 1/16") openings so other gauges can be substituted.
no room for 2 1/16
But for 1200 + gauges you can get one from HSV ;)
AUSI-isf-KLR 04-20-2008, 05:16 PM What size are the openings then?
What size are the openings then?
48mm front and 45mm back
mike c 04-20-2008, 05:21 PM Sweet.
AUSI-isf-KLR 04-20-2008, 06:14 PM 48mm front and 45mm back
thank you...
Mnnblk09 04-20-2008, 06:33 PM I definitely think that 4 gauges would be just perfect for the application. good work and if the price stays within reason you should be able to market them quite well.
GT-610 04-20-2008, 06:44 PM figure it out and you will have many buyers-this you can count on!!!!!
KaiserM715 04-20-2008, 09:24 PM Would it be possible to get the same needles as the fuel and temp gauges (with the metal insert)?
Would it be possible to get the same needles as the fuel and temp gauges (with the metal insert)?
It is possible but most likely won't be done. Even if you look at expensive cars/models such as VXR8 or VE HSV, the sports gauges in the middle don't have silver circles in them. And there will be a lot of additional cost to do it.
By the way, I'm using the same manufacturer parts as Holden uses in HSV. ;)
need4spd 04-20-2008, 10:16 PM dede:
Any chance of getting them with white needles (they also illuminate white in case you haven't seen them) for cars with the red seat inserts with the red gauge trim (those cars have white needles vs the red needles on the blk interior cars), here is a picture:
http://www.bimmerfest.com/photos/data/500/small_04-03-08_G8_017.jpg
If only going with three, I would take it with (in that order of importance):
Oil pressure
Oil Temp
Volts or transmission sump temp
How hard will it be to install them (how much of the dash has to be disassembled to get to the wiring if these mount over the digital display)?
Thanks for running this past us....
appletonrc 04-20-2008, 10:20 PM I love it. It looks much better than the atari ones. Would that be a DIY, or will there be extensive cut this, splice that...
need4spd 04-20-2008, 10:21 PM It is possible but most likely won't be done. Even if you look at expensive cars/models such as VXR8 or VE HSV, the sports gauges in the middle don't have silver circles in them. And there will be a lot of additional cost to do it.
By the way, I'm using the same manufacturer parts as Holden uses in HSV. ;)After looking at them again, have you considered maybe painting a silver circle on the needle? May not look bad, and may spruce them up a bit, right now they look to much like gauges out of a 78 Bonneville.
-dak- 04-20-2008, 10:24 PM I'd buy a set. Looking forward to more details!
edfiero 04-21-2008, 07:39 AM Looks great as is!! I much prefer this "factory" look to the cheesey aftermarket guages. Just please tell me that I won't have pull the entire dash out to install them
1 million times better. Good luck!
jimmyban 04-21-2008, 11:06 AM Dede,
I'm in if you can make this work without ripping the dash apart! How about cutting right through the Atari display?
If you are taking votes, I suggest going with 4 gauges.
Thanks for your efforts!
Jim
Speedyone 04-21-2008, 11:08 AM Looks good....I would buy a set in a heartbeat!
Chipless 04-21-2008, 11:27 AM Awesome! I'd buy these in two seconds!
Any chance of having a boost gauge? :p
Mr. Sandog 04-21-2008, 11:55 AM Any chance of having a boost gauge? :p
I second that request.
BSmith 04-21-2008, 12:30 PM Definitely looks good!

The white needles are an option, but the silver circles still seems to be a hassle to do.
Dede,

I’m trying to design it so that you don’t have to destroy any original parts and it can be converted back to original state. The LCD (Atari) screen will come out and that should create more space for the gauges and for the wires (5-7 wires).
Number of gauges will be an option at the purchase, which of course will affect the price.
Awesome! I'd buy these in two seconds!
Any chance of having a boost gauge? :p
dont know .... it will cost me $50 just to test it and if it works you will need run Tubing Kit for it
or i need sender 10-180 Ohms in 0-15 psi
the best i got 0-30 psi the boost gauge will reed 0-30 psi
Mr. Sandog 04-21-2008, 01:14 PM So no comment on the boost gauge?
FL_G8 04-21-2008, 02:14 PM huge improvement!!
Zaphod B 04-21-2008, 02:19 PM Dede,
I'm in if you can make this work without ripping the dash apart!
Those gauges look really nice. As jimmyban says, the problem is how to get signal to them. I suspect the wiring is going to be the hardest part.
I’ve taken the interior apart probably a dozen times by now. It’s not that hard at all. It takes me about an hour to strip the entire dash and about 30 minutes to put it all back together. Here’s a picture of the right side strip

Send this picture to Bob Lutz....he'd understand and tell the bean counters to spend the extra bucks on the 09
Rob Moser 04-21-2008, 05:32 PM So...now where in the@!&*(& am I going to mount my GPS??? I mounted it there to block those stupid bar graphs! Think you need t re-engineer this.....
RRM
Russo 04-21-2008, 05:42 PM looks good!
chill 04-21-2008, 08:10 PM looks great! i see in the two pics tho the gauge needles are different in location, i thought you had said they were not hooked up? either way great set up! now they would look really sweet swept towards the driver in their own individual pod! again, looks great!
chrish
Speedfreak 04-21-2008, 08:19 PM great job

I think the concern is for those of us doing it only once.... it will take 8 hours, and we will break stuff in the process. :banghead:
NVR2FST 04-21-2008, 09:01 PM That looks good! I was looking inside a Holden today and it had three gauges also.
Red888 04-21-2008, 10:12 PM Looks great! I'm down. Can you make more of a driver side slant? Don't send the pic to Lutz, he'll just screw it up again.
DollarBill 04-21-2008, 11:26 PM I can see many G8 owners wanting to do this. ;)
You all have fun. I'd rather keep a decent interior and stay digital. :coffee:
Dont get me wrong, it looks great(as far as analog gauges go)! I wouldnt down your cosmetic talent for a second. Did you do it yourself?
Looks great! I'm down. Can you make more of a driver side slant? Don't send the pic to Lutz, he'll just screw it up again.
we have a straight back interior in the car. It doesn't need any angles and those gauges look fine facing straight back and have a perfect visibility. In fact, I tried putting them sideways and it looked weird.
SRG963 04-22-2008, 06:26 AM What do you guys think?
http://www.g8board.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=816&stc=1&d=1208720939
Look great. May I suggest having equal spacing. From the edge in as well as in between the gauges. Maybe have the outside two centered over the air vents? Gauges could use some current/modern trim or something. Looks much better than stock.
GEE ATE 04-22-2008, 07:06 AM Looks great. I like that it appears to be factory equipment. My only concern is tearing apart the dash to get the gauges to function. Would buy a set if the install is moderately easy to do. Great work.
Stingpac 04-22-2008, 12:13 PM These look amazing ... 3 centered gauges would be perfect. Once you iron out all the details ... you definitely have my business ...

-dak- 04-22-2008, 09:38 PM I don't care if I have to take the dash out to replace those gauges. It is worth it to get rid of that Atari display. Why does GM insist on putting their personal "touch" on a perfectly good Holden product?
Can't wait for pricing!

I'll give you that one. I'm still down.

The first 3 listed (I rearranged them from the way Dede posted them) are going to be in the GXP (in digital form). But, I like 'em. As for the wiring, is there a plug like on the '05 GTO (& most of the '06s) for guages that GM didn't let Pontiac use?
ADent 04-22-2008, 11:34 PM Looks much better.
Can you get more than 90 deg sweep? With all that space 180 or 300 deg gauges would probably fit.
StolenFox 04-23-2008, 07:55 AM Looking good Dede!
I love to see people's inventive processes at work.
What the heck were they thinking with the "Atari" gauges.........

HANNlBAL KING 04-23-2008, 01:39 PM I'm ready for the finished product. The Atari gauges are killing me :(

Hahahah.....how ironic. The G8 spyhunter advertisement was a throwback to the younger days for potential buyers (and was well received).........but the built in atari display got rejected...
Space Invaders anyone........:gr_jest:
BTW Dede.....gauges will look the ****z more evenly spaced.
as for the update, I had the interior parts ordered so that I don't have to take the car apart every time I'm trying something out. Hopefully I'll be able to do something before my vacation.
Stingpac 04-29-2008, 06:36 PM Dede .. Any idea of the cost of this upgrade ... still very interested !

They look great!! I would buy something like this now if available and had good instruction on how to install them. If they match the dash gauges you would have a big winner.

and you can start with $1200 of the trim upgrade, add the gauges and the control box. If you really want them(HSV), you can start buying them already :) most people are speechless after they hear the price of the HSV gauges.

Oil Pressure
Transmission Temperature
Oil Temperature
Volts

dmacchia 05-06-2008, 12:27 AM You know, I would even be OK with a set of dummy gauges that were pre-set (heck, most of the gauges everyone has listed never really move anyway). Especially if that brought the price down to $50.

so dede any updates?
I did decide to go with back mounted unit which will be mounted in place of lego gauges after the dash trim is completely removed.
It will give it much nicer fit and I won’t have to create the bezel to hold the glass. The space on the back is very limited due to air ducts so I really don’t think that I can go with more than 3 gauges in there.
appletonrc 05-07-2008, 06:33 AM I told the dealer where I bought the car and he was interested in a replacement kit. If you get something put together, you can probably get dealers to install these too.

jsalbre 05-13-2008, 12:35 AM The problem with those dash-top double gauge pods is that anyone with a GT or the upgraded sound system in the V6 model has a speaker there. I'd hate to lose the center speaker personally.

I agree. I am waiting for Dede's "kit," which looks like the way to go IMO.
Stingpac 05-13-2008, 11:01 AM Me too .. .I wish Dede would give a timetable as to when they're gonna be available and at what price.
I don't want to speculate on the price. Since it's not finished I don't know what is going to be involved. And the time frame really depends on how fast I am going to be getting the parts I'm ordering on the project. Hopefully I have most of them by the time I come back from vacation in 2 weeks.

Looks better...but it just is a software upgrade...which means it ought to be able to be copied and retrofitted to a 2008 G8
HardEight 05-30-2008, 01:59 PM There is another thread floating around about this, but in the V6 with the bas radio with no display, the readout shows up on the Pac-Man screen. So obviously, you can program it to read whatever you like, but it will still be ugly, lol.
jsalbre 05-30-2008, 03:45 PM I don't see anything wrong with the display itself, just what they chose to display there. I say give me a giant speed readout so the passengers can freak out. :)

unixadm 05-30-2008, 05:04 PM That looks very nice. I wish it had transmission temperature though. :)

I like how it looks factory.
sccaGTO 05-30-2008, 05:23 PM Looks great, Dede. Now, you have to make it functional. :gr_jest:

Red888 05-30-2008, 08:25 PM What's the up-charge for silver centers on the dials?
mlott132 05-30-2008, 08:34 PM Definitely be interested in these when they do become available. Any idea as to pricing?
TriShield 05-30-2008, 08:38 PM I don't know about that.
Looks better to me, good enough to not warrant tearing the car apart.
sccaGTO 05-30-2008, 10:54 PM  ?????????????????

When you first started this thread, you said the dials were just for looks right now. That made it seem like they didn't move.....yet.

appletonrc 05-31-2008, 01:34 PM I love them. Any idea of cost/install procedure yet? Will this be open heart surgery to install?
Gfrom8 05-31-2008, 03:05 PM I kinda almost like those better than the old red gauges, even if they don't work..lol

GXPaycheck 06-02-2008, 11:09 PM Now THAT is the best looking setup for that space I have ever seen!

How about a boost gauge for those that are going TT or Blown?
answer is still the same as in the post 37.
I can do boost gauge 0-30 psi but in the 45degree sweep scale, it will look too busy.
If I ever find electrical sender reading 15 PSI in 0-180ohm range, I'll definitely add it to the list.
edfiero 06-03-2008, 09:54 AM Guages look great, but how much effort to take the dash apart to install (for the guy thats never taken the dash apart before)? Is this a 1 hour job, or a whole weekend event ?
Red888 06-04-2008, 11:23 PM The white needles are an option, but the silver circles still seems to be a hassle to do.
How much hassle will it cost???? I know you can do it!
G8Benny 06-05-2008, 08:48 PM looks more "factory installed" then the left over Pontiac 6000 dash parts they used. Hay maybe the reason we have hugh oil pans is that Pontiac had left over oil pans from a truck! Maybe the hood scoops were in storage since 1980.
Great Job. I'll buy a set if installation is not $600
liqredG8GT 06-05-2008, 09:47 PM I'm in for sure, those should have come with the car!
OVERULD 06-05-2008, 09:58 PM Nice work dede, add my name to the list of interested parties willing to fork over some cash for this option.
asylum 06-05-2008, 11:27 PM Looks better...but it just is a software upgrade...which means it ought to be able to be copied and retrofitted to a 2008 G8
the base stereo models have a lot of the information normally displayed on the screen up there, is that the same as the base stereo G8's? little things like volume control etc come up when things like that are changed too
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d1/asylum83/SSinterior.jpg
and honestly, i'd much prefer the atari/nintendo screens than the stock omega's nokia 5110 crap!
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d1/asylum83/omegainterior.jpg
Ausstar 06-06-2008, 12:19 PM that must be the executive or belina. this will make some news I think.... in Aus and here.
08G8GT 06-14-2008, 09:28 AM Dede whats the latest update on the gauge replacements very interested in them
appletonrc 06-14-2008, 10:44 AM Dede whats the latest update on the gauge replacements very interested in them
Yeah, even pontiac agrees that they are craptastic. So much so they think nothing is better. I would really like the analog gages. I'm considering a piece of brushed aluminum for now.
forcefedjunkie 06-14-2008, 10:16 PM Could you make an alternative design with a couple "pods" or openings rather than integrated gauges so that the user can choose his own gauges to install?
Todd
BBBBGXP 06-15-2008, 01:00 AM dede when you get those things perfected and a price and instructions worked out, shoot me a PM. I'm getting an '09 and will have the space for them right away!
GT-610 06-15-2008, 08:55 AM dede,we are all like a pack of drooling dogs and you went into the kitchen to get our dinner last month.LOL
TriShield 06-15-2008, 02:55 PM Yeah, even pontiac agrees that they are craptastic. So much so they think nothing is better.

appletonrc 06-15-2008, 06:57 PM http://www.g8board.com/forums/showpost.php?p=57399&postcount=27
Doesn't mean they can't change it... as long as they didn't make any yet. They could keep it for the GXP and drop it on the base/GT.
jimmyban 06-18-2008, 09:19 AM Dede is on radio silence...he's probably negotiating with GM to introduce his awesome gauge package into the 09 1/2 models!
G8>550i 06-18-2008, 12:47 PM I don't understand why they just don't design a better guage display like they have in the GXP show car and send the softward upgrade to all G8 owners. the problem is not the screen, just the atari inspired design of what shows on it. Existing woners would be ticked to get it upgraded.
48548 06-18-2008, 12:50 PM I agreee i just want to have it reprogrammed to look like the gxp show car, i would pay a small price for the programming to have it look like that and also pay to have it show pounds for the oil pressure instead of bars, that are meaning less to the average person.
cszab 06-23-2008, 07:32 PM We like the look also and will follow to see when they become available.
GeorgeInNePa 07-04-2008, 09:57 PM Any updates?
