i never had it light up.. but what is it?

Its for skip shift for the GXP manual ;)

It lights up nice and pretty and doesn't do anything! (in my car, at least... :D )

I think the GTs also have the manual transmission option...in Australia. Just, for some reason they decided not to allow us the option. Damn GM!

Not rocket science...

1) Take rates for manuals here are extremely low, not justifying the expense to certify more than one model for the U.S.

2) The few people who buy manuals are pretty hard-core and a significant percentage of them are likely to spend a few thousand extra if that is the only way to get the manual.

3) Therefore offering the GXP, which is way more profitable than the GT, with a stick represented free money for GM.

It seems that manuals represented about 40% of GXPs and sold out first. But they only represented maybe 4% of total V8 G8 production. It stands to reason that quite a few of those GXP buyers would have bought stick GTs instead had they existed.
