: Tirerack now has Sensors for TPMS (updated)
GEE ATE 04-21-2008, 04:28 PM Called TIRERACK to order a new set of wheels for my G8. They had wheels and tires in stock but no sensors for the TPMS. Given that a light would go off in the dash, and that I would have to unmount all the tires to place the sensors on the rims when they were available I decided to wait until the sensors became available and do it all at once. Anyone else have a similar experience?
HardEight 04-21-2008, 04:41 PM I am not familiar with what type of sensors are in our cars but I have been told that on most with a TPMS, its in the valve stems, and you can put them into the new wheels.
Just order your wheels and tires unmounted and take them to a local shop and have everything swapped over.
Someone who has already replaced the wheels will know more, but I hope this is the case with our cars.
I have worked in the tire business for 18 years and have had many runins with sensors. In 2008 just about all GM cars came with a new style sensor. The old ones were bolt in type. The new ones are a rubber stem with the sensor hanging off the bottom. If you are very careful you can take a small screwdriver (one with a dull tip) and work it back threw the rim. I have done alot of them being we install alot of wheels. Any good tire shop should be able to handle this for you. Just don't ask the dealer they will tell you it can't be done. But as I said you must be careful not to poke a hole in the stem. If you have any more qustions please let me know.
TireDoc 04-22-2008, 09:06 AM We were under the impression the sensor is different than the "standard" USA sensors, and the part number we were given is not available to us as of yet. If someone has a picture of thier sensor (including the white part numbers off the bottom) please let me know

locrzng888 04-22-2008, 02:45 PM Just buy them from gm, they might be higher, but, you probably won't have any problems with computer. Mine were $43 a piece. I've already put mine in, but, the number listed above sounds correct. I got them in just one day thru my local gm dealer. You don't even have to buy them from a pontiac dealer, just any gm dealer can get them with that part number.

GEE ATE 04-22-2008, 04:26 PM Well TireDoc, I am ready to part with over $2000 for new 20" wheels and tires. Do you know when TireRack will have the sensors? They seem to be readily available. Would like to purchase everything as a package with sensors included.

I think his biggest concern is not having to take time out of his schedule to swap all of the pieces over when he swaps wheels out. This is a bigger concern for owners that plan to run snow tires in winter. But, if he is planning to run these new 20" wheels & tires all year long, then it won't matter if he swaps them over. The picture posted earlier is the new style that GM has gone to. It is much easier to deal with than the older style. The rubber stems are really all that would need to be replaced. The sensor will screw into the new rubber stems. The old stems from the factory wheels will more than likely tear & become useless when they are removed from the stock wheels.
TireDoc 04-23-2008, 08:53 AM I'll pass that along, and will see what we can get and for how much. We have to buy from GM as well, so I'm not sure what kind of discount we can get. This one has a different protocol than the ones we stock.
I'm subscribing to this. I'm looking at getting a 2nd set of wheels & tires for winter motoring.

TireDoc 04-24-2008, 08:36 AM We'll have the correct sensor here (Indiana) next week. Part number was a little different than above, but gave us just enough info to get the ball rolling. Thanks !
They will be $55 each..........
GEE ATE 04-24-2008, 10:30 AM Thanks TireDoc...looking forward to ordering my new wheels and tires WITH sensors!
GEE ATE 04-24-2008, 08:07 PM Success! Tirerack now has TPMS sensors. Thanks TireDoc for all your help. Looking forward to my new wheels and tires.
appletonrc 04-24-2008, 08:49 PM That saves the hassle of getting the rims and tires separate, then getting the sensors, then getting the local guy to get the whole thing put together. I'll be ordering a complete set this summer/fall. Thanks for all the help TireDoc
Tire doc. If 15922396 is not the right part number, what is?
chiefpontiac 04-28-2008, 08:54 AM Damn, $220 extra for every set of mounted wheels/tires to comply with the jerks in DC that think we are so stupid as to not know when we have a flat. Sheesh. Wouldn't surprise me if the authors of this legislation were also ones responsible for making my tv go dark next Feb.
Is there an easy way to just shut off the sensor system? (other than black electrical tape)

No it is not a Holden part it is PONTIAC. Not everything on the G8 is specific to Holden. I looked in my 2008 Parts catalog and the 2009 catalog and they list the same part number. I am not saying this could not be incorrect but that is what all GM dealers have to work with.

The jerks in DC were simply helping the lazy jackasses that can't (should I say don't want to) check their tire pressures. Talk about your tax dollars at work. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v642/SCCAGTO/rolleyes.gif
The only way to turn off the TPMS might be to see if there is a fuse or relay that can be removed. I don't know for sure if this can be done (I don't have a G8), so don't expect that it can be done.
