: idea lemme know what u guys think
buzz8907 09-02-2009, 03:49 AM im new to the car mod scene so let me get ur guy's imput on this exhaust idea for my 3.6. if i remove the mid two resinators and muffler and replace it with an x pipe and run straight pipes back, remove the stock mufflers in the rear and replace them with a cherry bomb vortexes. is this possible 1 and 2 what do you think the resulting sound will be
:judge:
buzz8907 09-02-2009, 04:36 AM apparently no one knows?
Yes, you can do it, it's possible and others have done it. As for the sound quality, not so good IMO. It's a 6 cyl. You can never make it sound any different, and with the cherry bombs it'll just sound like a POS.
Best of luck tho...
Chief 09-02-2009, 08:49 AM What you describe is basicaly what magna Flow tried in their proto type system. They removed the three resonators in the middle of the exhaust system, one of them also acts as a cross flow, and replcaed them with an X pipe and their resonators. They also inceased the pipe dia. to 2.5". The replaced the stoc mufflers with their mufflers. Over all the system sounded great. Only down side was a bad drone at 1500 RPM's in 5th gear. That's the only reason why i took the system off my car.
Your idea is good, just replace the cheery bombs with a good muffler and you'll be OK other than the afore mentioned drone.
duffman 09-02-2009, 05:13 PM Chief is right, the drone is a continuous problem that so far has limited solutions. Removing the resonators and replacing them with an X pipe will produce a solid sound, you just have to be careful on your mufflers or you will be confused with a 25cc Briggs and Stratton.
Hopefully they will contribute more effort into the Magnaflow exhaust, the system sounds incredible (except at 1500 RPM).
buzz8907 09-02-2009, 06:45 PM SO drone is a constant and as of right now, an uneliminatable problem for the v6, is it unbarrable? Or another system i could go with that wont b as bad, i see alot of people running catbacks but theyr all a little pricy
duffman 09-02-2009, 10:04 PM It's not that bad, but definitely noticeable. There's another thread on here I remember reading about someone deleting the resonators and running stock mufflers, apparently that had a improved sound with little to no drone. I'll try to find that for you to read.
buzz8907 09-04-2009, 06:50 PM thanks looking forward to that info really want to get the car souding better
Saginaw748 09-04-2009, 09:24 PM I had a custom x-pipe fabricated, and installed. This removed the resonators, as well as the mid-muffler and kept the stock mufflers. At the same time I had a *minor* washer mod. After driving for a while I decided to remove the washers, and just go with the stock mufflers. With the washer mod and the x-pipe fabbed up, I was getting a very ricey sound when accelerating hard, plus the car seems faster/smoother with more backpressure.
To be honest, currently it really does not sound very loud (but then again I only hear it from inside when driving, or at idle). However, the sound it does make sounds better than stock (I know...duh). I debated going with some aftermarket mufflers, but decided against it. I also mentioned adding the aftermarket mufflers at a later time to my exhaust fabricator, and he pretty much said he wouldn't go that far.
Other than cell phone recording, I don't have any way to record the sound at this point.
Unfortunately I am done with mods for now :whine:....but at least I got this exhaust mod done, my GXP Diffuser installed, and painted the chrome grill surrounds!
buzz8907 09-05-2009, 12:26 AM eh im glad that ur mods worked out well for u. im not really looking for that ricer sound thought im looking to avoid that actually, i want a deeper sound like a v8 or smthen along those lines, thanks for ur input tho good luck with ur future mods, what color did u paint ur grill surrondings
Saginaw748 09-05-2009, 08:34 AM Exactly, ricer. That's what it sounded like with the exhaust work, AND the washer mod. That's why I took out the washers.
As for the V8 sound...I wish you luck with finding that in conjuncture with having minimal cabin drone at cruising speeds.
I'm happy with mine as of now. For less than $150 it opened up the exhaust making it flow better so acceleration isn't as hesitant. I also have a CAI installed. For now the car is as far as I want to get into with mods - performance wise. Those mods combined have made the car more tolerable accelerating and have netted a few more MPG's. I mean, it's only a V6 and my daily driver at that. If I want to truly go to jail (and sound like a big block V8) I'll get on the bike.
I painted the front chrome surrounds flat black.
Here's a pic of my x-pipe, painted grill, and diffuser.

buzz8907 09-05-2009, 07:27 PM very nice work man, i really like flat black around the grill, i think it makes the car look meaner. I did the washer mod today actually, and your right a have a two washers on the lower bolts and one on top, and its louder yea, and inbetween a ricer and something nice. thanks for ur input
buzz8907 09-05-2009, 07:29 PM wered u snag ur diffuser
hazer396 09-06-2009, 02:19 AM Saginaw748:
How does it sound with the X Pipe? and do you feel more power?
Saginaw748 09-08-2009, 03:24 PM Snagged the diffuser online from monsterpartsonline (ends up being a GM/Pontiac/Buick near Philly). I got it in about 10 days - and it was back ordered. Apparently they are trickling in.
The sound with the X-pipe is more distinct than stock. At idle when standing behind the car sounds a bit 'uncorked' so to speak. It's not loud, but you can tell just a little something has been done. Overall I'd say for less than $150, it was a good mod.
As for power, I can feel a difference when starting from a stop. The hessitation is a lot less. Also, when passing someone, and shifting down it seems to get out a bit easier too. When looking at what was there, compared to now it's amazing how restricted this car is! The resonators, a regular sized mid-muffler, then the actual huge mufflers before exit makes me wonder who's emissions are actually that stringent!
The muffler guy that fabbed it up was feeling creative, and you could tell he'd rather be doing something like this than doing an oil change, or replacing bushings on a PT Cruiser (his co-worker was doing that).
I also ended up with around 1 mpg better fuel economy overall.
I'll see if my cell phone video will do it any justice tonight.
hazer396 09-08-2009, 09:49 PM hmm i think i might do it too then.. cuz im thinkin about just replacing my mufflers.. but that drone is just pissing me off and idk what to get!!
