GeorgeInNePa 04-22-2008, 06:11 PM Oh yea, this is cool.

New Era's CAI and the Vector ECM tune are installed. The throttle response is crisper, now I need the TCM tune.
There are 4 cables out there, one of you guys need to send it back! ;)
The sound from under the hood is amazing at WOT.
:gears:
I have only one question. Everyone else who has installed the ECM has talked about doing a "security re-learn". I did the CASE re-learn with a DashHawk, but so far I didn't have to do anything else. ???
Kirk@VectorMotorsports 04-22-2008, 06:34 PM The security learn is only needed if the ECM has been in a different car at some point. The cores we have been getting lately have all been blank when they come in.
Have fun!
FL_G8 04-22-2008, 08:39 PM sound clips please..
Rob Moser 04-22-2008, 08:58 PM Mine didn't need the security key re-learn either. Kind of a bummer when you think you may have screwed something up. Wish they would post this info or tell you when they ship you the ECM... I also got a current code on the MAF, because I removed the air box to get the ECM installed - with the key on- PANIC!- Turned out to be nothing. Have the 0315Unknown code, in history, like the rest of you.
Went to Google - found a Solstice owner who installed VMS ECM and also didn't need to the security key thing. RELIEF!
Feel Vector needs to tell us a bit more on any tune specific issues for each of the ECM's we purchase. Some will just buy ECM. Others may add exhaust and/or CAI. Also would like to know if tune was for 91 or 93. I use 93 here in FL, but when I head to Iowa for summer, best I can do usually is 91 with or without ethanol. Will ethanol affect tune? I sure don't know???? MAYBE ALL VMS ECM'S ARE THE SAME!!!???!!!???
Also felt they could have explained the installation a bit better - perhaps with a few pictures????? Have asked all of these questions and more in e-mails. VMS never answer my questions completely.
Did you know that an HP tuner would have done the crank re-learn just like the DashHawk, and you could have tuned other cars, or tweaked this tune. I didn't until my son researched it and told me I should have bought the HP tuner instead of DashHawk. We have 4 other small block chevy engines between us so could have put it to good use.
Runs great so far. NOT UNHAPPY - JUST PERPLEXED. Hope it is even better when I get my CAI and exhaust mods.

I imagine it is, but I'd think that you are sucking in a lot of under-hood hot air with that setup.

If HPTuners works anything like EFILive does you have to buy additional licenses to tune other cars. Not a huge deal but you can't go from car to car tuning everyone. At least you can't with EFILive. I have EFI for my diesel. I went with VMS because it didn't require me to have a degree to understand how to tune the car. Leave it to the experts and have fun. The only thing I am a little concerned about right now is my A/F ratio. I need to get something to measure that just to make sure I am safe. Especially after I install the CAI in the next couple of weeks. EFILive is extremely in depth. I am sure if I spent a few months learning it I could figure it out. But, I am far too lazy for that. I would imagine HPTuners to be about the same. They are amazing if you have the knowledge to use them. Unfortunately, I don't.
NVR2FST 04-22-2008, 10:16 PM Yes, HP you have to pay for each vehicle and you can't tune the A6 yet with their software. So if you want a trans tune, VMS is it.
Smtkd 04-22-2008, 10:53 PM What kind of gains are you getting with this CAI and Vector tune guys?!!!!

New ECM's dont require a security learn, those directions are included just incase something goes wrong. There is nothing you can screw up by trying to do the security learn. As you stated the MAF code is from turning the key on with the MAF unplugged (which we relayed to you in an email) and is no big deal.
As far as the octane goes, its for whatever you ordered it for; hence the reason for the drop down choice on the website for octane and listing for modifications. Nearly all fuel has 10% ethanol now and we tune for that and any other mods you have specifically hence the area for listing modifications on the order form.
I just went back and reread your emails and honestly I'm not sure how much more we could have answered them. In fact you even told us on a few occasions something to the effect of "nevermind its all ok now!". If you have questions or concerns that you feel arent being answered to your standards please CALL. We have people on staff that can answer any questions you may have if you somehow feel the answers you are recieving VIA email arent up to snuff so to speak.
As far as HPT goes it WILL NOT do a case learn on an E38 currently and the dashhawk is by far the best scan tool that doesnt require a PC. It also doesnt cost anything to move it from vehicle to vehicle over its lifetime.
Hope this helps, enjoy your tune and again if you have any questions let US know first.

Thanks for your info. My second ECM mod so a bit intimidated. First was a 90's SAAB TURBO that had the box under the drivers seat. Since DashHawk hooks up under dash, that was the first place I looked for ECM. MY IGNORANCE!
Once I found the ECM and got info on how it clips in, it was a 15 min. job to change out. Obviously was confused when I didn't get the padlock light and the car actually started. Thought it must be a fluke, so proceeded to do the security learn anyway, just in case. The crank re-learn went quick and flawlessly. Tried to clear "current" codes with engine running. DOESN"T HAPPEN!. Figured out you can only clear codes when engine is off and key is on.
Still think a 1 page sheet showing where ECM is, what needs to be moved to remove, how it clips in, and any peculiarities we might run into, like not needing security relearn if engine will start etc., would make this install a bit more user friendly. After 2 or 3, I probably could do it in my sleep....
Would have called, but did this at 8 PM EST.

Urthman 04-23-2008, 12:35 PM I've never done any mods like this before. Is this something that will void the warranty?
Rob Moser 04-23-2008, 04:51 PM ONLY IF YOU LET THEM!
Thats why many of us are getting the extra ECM. Truth be told, no one really knows what GM's ECM has stored for their techs to discern.... Me... I'm cynical, paranoid and just plain suspicious of everyone... but that's another story.

Actually we do :)
Rob as far as the post prior to this one no need to be sorry :) We DO appreciate feedback just keep in mind we have lots of avenues of communication open and are ready to help at the drop of a hat.

So, it is possible that it will void the warranty?
I'm considering doing this but I don't want to chance a problem with the warranty.

I've been threw this warranty question many times, with different tuners. If you want to be safe, purchase another ECM that is tuned already from VMS. You swap them out and bingo, more HP! You would want to swap the OEM back in for service, so keep it with your car.
I'm just waiting for my GT, then VMS will be hearing from me as well :gears:

From what I understand from VMS, there really is no need to swap them out when you go in for service.
The tech's can't go into the parameters deep enough to see changes in the tables and as long as the VIN is the same (which on the VMS swap it will be) there won't be any red flags to a tech.
Now if you blow the engine I would probably swap them out. LOL But, for normal things in the service department it should be a big deal at all.
Mike @ New Era 04-24-2008, 11:16 PM Under hood hot air , lol . Temps are the same as the stock airbox with this set up . The filter location is away from the engine , and even if the temps were 10 degrees above ambient (possibly sitting at a stand still , once you are moving the temperature drops) it will not have an effect on power with the additional airflow . The fastest N/A cars out there don't even use intakes because it is all about additional airflow as IAT drops once you get moving .
