Im having a hard time getting a good oil filter for my first oil change. I settled with the Bosch and Mobil 1 Fully synthetic oil.

What has everyone else used for their first change and how hard is it for you guys to find a good filter??
Bosch is better than stock but I like the Mobil 1 and K&N filter (which is 20.99 and wont get here till next week. FFS!!)?????

Cheers.

Oh and I have just over 2k on my GT.

I used a k&n filter for 11.99 from checker auto and mobil 1 extended life oil (synthetic)15,000 miles. I got that from walmart for something around 27.00 for 5 quarts and bought two and then installed the 300 psi filtermag on them. I think I had pics on the other link under the oil change.

I've heard that Purolator Pure1 filters are also good - they're easy to find around here.

I used the Delco filter. I have read several reviews that say the Delco filter is fine. I have had no problems finding them (PF48).

It'll be nothing but K&N filters for me. The biggest reason being the nice "nut" attached to the top end, makes them so easy to get off.

^^ yeah but 20.99 for an oil filter..!!! The bosch is the best one I can find from Autozone and it was only $6!! Just get one of those clamp things! they easilt take any filter off!

Yeah, once you get the original OEM oil filter off you shouldn't have much of a problem getting them off afterwards. If you do you are putting them on WAY too tight.

The dealer ones all seem to be put on by a gorilla on steroids. >:(

I purchased 4 K&N oil filters directly from K&N because no one had them in stock. At about $20 a pop, they're REAL expensive. I also bought the K&N air filter from them because no one had them in stock either.

$20 for an oil filter is absolutely ridiculous imo. No way I would pay that. Do they do something special? I must be missing something.

Same here. Delco every time.

Which Delco part number?......PF46's? The reason I ask is at Autozone, their book doesn't list an AC Delco part number. I got a Mobile 1 filter instead and compared it to the PF46. There's some kind of coil thing at the bottom of the filter that the Mobile 1 PF46 equivalent didn't have.

It's a PF48

$20 for the K&N filter for the G8?? Wow, they're much cheaper than that for my Jeep. I guess I won't be doing K&N.

Looking at the filter location on the G8 it does appear that it will be easy to get off. On my Liberty there's no way to get a filter wrench around it, you need a long extension and flex joint to even get a socket up there.

will a PF46 work as well?.....it's what the 6.0L GTO guys run. Anyone know what the little coil piece is too?

Not sure. I wouldn't use it.

Different thread pattern. Use the PF48 - it's only about $5 at Autozone.

PF48 and PF46 are very similar. Only two things really make them different.

One has built in pressure relief valve, one doesn't.

Different threads so you don't put the wrong one on.

While having a pressure relief valve in the engine and oil filter wouldn't be too bad, not having one in either could be really bad (oil filter element bursts, and then it's like not having a filter).

Where are you guys getting your k&n oil filters at checker auto, they are around 11.99 on line, so I am just curious why they cost so much? or 9.95 from summitracing.... Just trying to help people out save a couple of bucks as I love k&n also, here is a couple links for oil filters for those who care.

Good reference from the avergage person looking up oil filters and how they are made and pics of them taken apart.

guys go mobil 1 filter or AC Delco UPF 48 although regular delco is excellent as well call up you GM parts guy and tell him u want a 6 pack of UPF 48s there like the regular delco filter only black instead of blue and I beleive their at the same micron filtering level as mobil 1 and K & N
thats all I use from now on and the price isnt bad either like 7 or 8 bucks when u buy in a 6 pack plus S&H tho......
if u paid 20 for an oilfilter please keep it to ureself cause I dont know how u could ever agree to charge that to your card plus shipping...HTH

Hastings makes a quality oil filter... and for oil, nothing beats Royal Purple. 10$ oil filter and 8$ a quart, but that combo lasts a long ass time.

You can use all the exotic oil you want, but it better meet the GM6094M standard or you can probably kiss your warranty good bye. Mobil 1 meets it. That's all I run in my GTO.

RP meets API Service SL and GM4718M. From everything I've read 6094M is for dino oil and 4718M is for synthetics. Oils that meet 4718M will meet 6094M but not necessarily vice-versa.

For your reading pleasure. BTW, I was too lazy to see how up to date this list is. :p

Well what do you know? There's a date on it. (Doh)

Mobil 1 meets both the GM6094M and the GM4718M specs. HOWEVER, be careful of the so-called "Extended" version of Mobil 1 which is not GM4718M spec (don't know about the GM6094M spec).

Also, the so-called "synthetic" oils are still dino oils--just highly refined. There was a classic lawsuit a few years back where one of the big manufacturers was sued for claiming their oil was truly "synthetic."

It pays to join this forum. I just popped $80+ for 4 K&N oil filters before reading this post. Then I went on-line and saw them at a place mentioned by 48548 for $13.48 each!
And to think I could have used that extra $26 for a gallon of gas.

I am glad to share the info, but even better were the two links above that show what is in the filters and which ones are the same, and or made by the same company. That can save some money in itself. It look at it looks like mobil 1 is the same as the k&n filter. Check them out above, I did a lot of research before to find them before I went with the k&n which is what I always have used. Also check into the filter mag. I don't work for any of them, but just feel they are good products that I would put my name on. www.filtermag.com

the part number was an ra-300 it is the size of the filter(it fits a range of filters 2.90-3.4 inches in diam) and that is the same as my 95 lt1 f-body and 05 siverado because of the size of the oil filter. I got it from summit racing, I had pictures if anyone wanted to see how the oil filter looked stock at 834 miles with it on and after I cut it open. There were posted on here with another oil changing thread.
