Does anyone know if I can plug my XM radio into the AUX jack on the G8s stereo?

Yes you can. You will still need to run the antenna and all that.

Not too sure about that one. I have heard of people using the XM antenna for Sirius but never the onstar for XM or Sirius. Probably be best to just run the XM antenna itself.

I'll post some pictures when I can (gotta cut the lawn), but I've got my Pioneer Inno 2 all set up in my car now!

I love it. Since I'm not an expert car audio installer, I just went to Best Buy and had them run the power, wires, and antenna.

I've got it on the ledge in front of the battery pac man gauge.

I went running around in my G8 with one of the guys from G6Performance. My wife cut the grass while I was gone. :)
Looking forward to hearing about the XM/sound quality.

The antenna on the G8 actually has Onstar and XM, and AM/FM. There should be a loose end for the XM cable somewhere...

I would like to know if anyone has attempted to remove the OEM Blankpunt stereo from the GT's. I need to know if I can simply buy a sirius tuner and connecting to the AUX jack in the rear in order to give a seemless look. I also would like to know if there is a factory replacement in case this is not possible. Please let me know.

Has anyone confirmed the existance of a "loose" wire for connecting an XM/Sirius receiver to the Onstar antenna, or come up with a way to splice into the existing wiring ?

It's just speculation.
The simplest answer is that GM just used an off the shelf unit that is used on other models, with OnStar and XM.

I received this PM from someone who works at Holden:

i asked a couple of people i know that work with the main body harness and wiring areas, apparently the wiring for the XM is in the MY08 harness, but its taped down with the rest of the harness on the right hand wheel arch, behind the rear seat.

the XM reciever is under the parcel shelf in the boot, next to the on-star module. so according to that, the main hard work seems out of the way.

BUT..

there was a part number change for the main harness from 08 to 09.

this could be any minor change such as wiring connection shapes, but could be something major too. only other area i didn't get a chance to check out is the headunit.

to me they look identical, but surely there will have to be something that can be done to upgrade, or it could even just work when its all connected?

hopefully this helps! if i can find anything else out i'll keep in touch.

I had also read that somewhere in the '08 G8s is the reciever for the XM system. Satelitte radio requires a different antenna than FM/AM. This is why I asked for proof when someone posted that the standard radio antenna has the capability to pick up XM's signal. I'm not gonna call anyone a liar unless I can prove that they are wrong. But, if they know that it would work, then they will have to prove that.

I concur. BUT, I think the gist of what others were saying, is that the antenna on the roof, is a combo antenna.
If you look at the rear window glass, there is no antenna element.
Therefore, we could conclude that the AM/FM antenna is in the same housing as the OnStar. OnStar being satellite, it would not be out of the question, that XM, also satellite, could "share" the antenna with OnStar.
It would be my guess that the AM/FM antenna is the mast part of the unit, and the satellite antenna is housed in the somewhat large base.

Thanks for the info, but I read through that post and another imbedded in that thread and don't see any clear details on the ability to use the second aux input on the back of the radio. In fact, from what I can tell, it does exist but it would require new radio software in order to use that second aux in.

Maybe I can just find a splitter with a switch that will allow me to toggle between XM Roady and my IPod. This would at least eliminate the need to swap the cord between devices.

Still would like to know if there is any way to hook up my XM Roady to the stock antenna (if it indeed has a satellite feed, which given OnStar it probably does.) At least that would eliminate another wire in my car!

I've got Sirius so I don't know if this XM connection would work or not, but it's worth a shot.

Anyone have any more information on where this supposed XM connection is? I'd like to have a better idea where it's at or if it even exists before I go tearing my trunk all apart in a mad frenzy. Just telling me it's in the trunk behind one of the panels does me no good. Which panel and where is it approximately?

Moving on in case it doesn't really exist...where did you guys mount your antennas, tuners, and how did you run all your wires?

I painted my antenna white and have it on the trunk lid. Wire was real easy to route through the truck, under the sill plates and dashboard on the passenger side of the vehicle. The head unit (Sportster IV) is fastened to the right side of the center stack and positioned right in front of the power port and AUX in. Power and auxiliary cables are bundled behind the head unit.

I'll try to grab some pics and post them.

Since my G8 is red, I may just leave the Sirius antenna black. That was one of the first things I thought of when I got this car, how to get that wire inside the car.

I've got a Sportster IV as well so I'll be interested to see how you have it mounted.

For the power cable, did you tap into the cars power system anywhere so the unit turns on when you turn on the car or do you just leave it plugged into the power port?

Also, I decided tearing apart the trunk wasn't such a bad idea since it would also allow me to turn up the amp gain. I found a plug that I have no idea what it goes to. Anyone know? Could this be the mysterious XM plug?

I took my girlfriend's car to the stereo shop to get XM installed and they put the antenna on the dash, in the right hand corner. Didn't need to run any wire outside, and it works great. They said mounting the antenna inside the vehicle works fine for XM, but not so well for Sirius.

The Power Port under the radio works as an accessory, only 'hot' with the key. It's also on the retained power circuit, like 10 minutes of power after the key is shut off and before any door is opened.

Briefly, your Sirius turns on and off with the car when in the Power Port.

Just a side note. My retained power works until the driver's door is open, even if another door is opened.

Yeah, I didn't check the other side. I knew that's where the amp was so I figured any other radio wiring might be on that same side as well. I'll have to check out the other side.

Still, I wouldn't mind knowing what that loose plug is for.

Got my Sirius Sportster 5 on order from Crutchfield. Should have it tomorrow and will get it installed Saturday. Plan to mount the antenna like Speeder did but still not certain on how to mount the head unit. I love Speeder's method but I need to maintain ability to open the glove box so will have to come up with something at least slightly different.

Anyone know if ProFit or any manufacturers plan a vehicle specific mount for our cars?

buzzard31581

Yeah, I didn't like the mounting point Speeder used either for the same reason of wanting to open the glove box. Also, it sticks out into the leg area of the passenger side of the car. It was nice if no one ever sat in the passenger seat or you never opened the glove box, but still. Soooo, I just ran all the wiring and just stick it down in the little cubby next to the power outlet and just leave it.

I could be mistaken, but I heard the newer plug and play type XM radios do not require the regular attenae. You simply plug it in to the front of the radio with a power source. I could be wrong though - anyone heard of this?

Well, I looked on the other side when I did my Sirius installation and there's no plug on the other side. All the wires I saw were for lights and the trunk latch. If anyone has any idea where this plug might be, I'd be interested to see if it would work with my Sirius as well so I don't have to have that satellite antenna mounted on my trunk deck.

Its a two part solution. so if you do order it, you'll need the G8 specific mount PLUS the device specific mounting bracket.
