Interested as well. Thinking about putting them on at least for winter.

I know this thread died over a month ago, but I'm becoming interested in this as well. I've noticed that lately I'm getting a bunch of black crap on the sides of my car right behind the wheels. I'm guessing it's just from the brand new tires wearing down. If there's anything I can do to keep this stuff off the car and keep it looking a little cleaner I'd be interested. I'm wondering if these mudflaps are the way to go.

NVM...found a couple pictures here (http://www.g8board.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2461&page=2&highlight=mud+flaps)...still not sure if they help with this issue.

I bought a set,but didn't like the fronts. Was gonna take them back but after seeing all the crap on the tail I think i will only do the rears. Might try trimming the fronts down a bit and see if they look better.

I have them and i must say they look sweet. Molded to fender and look factory installed. I have been given a few compliments so far. I don't see why you all wouldn't want them...debris over time will chip your paint due to the tires slinging all that dirt and crap on your fenders...

Anyway, if it stops raining today, i'll post a few pics...

How flexible are the flaps? They look awfully low to the ground, which means, potential to get ripped off. I'm having a hard enough time keeping my nose off the ground. Winter was NOT kind to the NorthEast.

racerx
06-19-2008, 10:30 AM
Well I just measured it, and from the bottom of the flap to the ground you have 4 inches on the front, and 6 in the rear.

Very flexible and durable. As for winter, I had mud flaps on my jag, which was way closer to the ground, about 2 inches of clearance, never had a problem with snow and ice. Ice and snow would build up, but never warped it or damaged them. Had them on for two winters. only problem i had was speed bumps...damn speed bumps. G8, stock suspension, no worries of them hitting the ground or any speed bumps.

I think it looks great, and like i said, people noticed it at work and said it looked great as well. Only one way to find out if it'll make it through winter....stay tune to next spring!

Thats more my concern... potholes make it hard enough, I don't want to go ripping flaps off the car.

Mud flaps are an acquired taste and comes from living in an area where they sand, gravel and salt the roads in the winter.

GETGONE
09-07-2008, 02:14 PM
That's why they're going on ours for the winter. They put a TON of sand/salt and crap on the roads here in Michigan. I'd like to keep it looking decent for a few years at least! My biggest worry is the nose and how many rock chips it might wind up with!

From a proud owner of mudflaps...they look great...I get lots of compliments about them; and, living in the northeast they'll keep the road crap, snow, salt, sand, and anything else off of the sides of the car.

People on this forum complain about paint problems. I don't want to be one of them.

What screws did you guys use to put the splash guards on? length?

GETGONE
03-22-2009, 08:50 AM
It doesn't need any screws. The fronts use the two screws that are already in the fenderwell. You just remove them and then put the mud flap on then use those screws to hold it in place. On the bottom you drill a hole and use a plastic pop rivet that's included to hold it in place. The rears already have the rivets in place which you remove then drill out the hole at the bottom and then mount them in place. Everything you need to mount them and instructions are included in the kit.

Did you do anythig to protect the new holes from corrosion? a coat of paint or sealant of any sort? Will the drilling into the body void the corrosion warranty?

GETGONE
04-05-2009, 11:25 AM
Plastic doesn't rust. That's what you drill into. The ground effects in the front and the wheel well liner in the rear.

I got them installed. I like the fronts, but the backs do look like the mug flaps that they are. However, overall I like the look. I wish they had more stylish splash guards though.

Ok, so i bit the bullet and put some mudflaps on. I'm not sure if i love em but I'm hoping they keep the car a bit cleaner. These are not the moulded ones as i did not love the way the front ones looked.

How do they look any different than the molded ones? They're still a flat edge that doesn't fit to the curve of the body and ground effects. Only difference is it doesn't have the lip and that wouldn't show up on a black car anyways. Mine came off when I put the summer wheels back on.

I ended up buying a set for my red car. I bought the GM ones and I really like tehm. They donlt take anything away from the appearance, and protecting the paint is a plus. Pics available on my webpage.

If the rear were molded then I'd go for em in a second! But a flat non molded mudflap? Just go to Pep Boys and buy a $20 set and save the diff.

Thank you for posting this. I installed mine today and was wondering if I needed to get something to seal the metal if I was drilling through it. But they went on pretty easy. Well after I borrowed a 22mm socket from my neighbor.

lug nuts to remove the rear wheels.

I just have a multi fit lug wrench and just picked the socket that fit. Never paid attention to which size it was since I put aftermarket lugs on when I put my aftermarket wheels on.

I have them on mine, don't mind the look. Helps with keeping the car a bit cleaner and stops any crap from flying up on the rear bumper. Freaked myself out once with them, I thought I rammed the bumper going over a bit of a divot in a driveway but it was just the flap scraped.

I have the GM type but on the front only. The back just didn't look good, and I don't seem to get much crap off the back wheels. The fronts do work well and since they are molded I think they look good. They do scrape though.

Really, because I ordered mine from monster on 10/15. They shipped on 10/21 and I installed them yesterday. I think the rear do look funky, but I will keep them on. I would rather keep the crap off of my paint vs diminishing the looks.

Also on a side note I had a cop following me this morning. Its like they finally realized what a G8 was. Hopefully I am being paranoid. But when you have that big v8 bellowing exhaust on a cold November morning, they might realize that my g8 will give their chargers a run for their money.

So you just have to drill 1 hole per flap?
In that case you could remove them in the summer, just plug hole with plastic push pin. Is this correct?

Yes, you drill one hole per mud flap and can easily be removed. I put them on when I put the snow tires on and pull them off when I put the summer wheels back on.

Where do you drill the hole through? Painted plastic or black plastic in the wheel well?

It goes through painted plastic under the ground effects piece in front and the wheel well in the rear.

Are the mudflaps a hard plastic or flexible? Reason I ask is because the only way I'd put these on is if they can be painted to match.

GETGONE
05-10-2010, 05:04 PM
They're pretty hard, but not totally stiff. I think they are the proper type of plastic to be paint matched. I think they'd look even worse paint matched. That's why mine are only on for the MI winters then they get removed.
